Lachmann was the first to cast wholly aside the commonly received text, and Bishop Wordsworth has taken it up again, believing that God overruled its formation in His good providence. Though these editors had each his own plan, in some places, all came to one conclusion, pointing out that the common Greek text (from which in the main our venerable Authorised Version was translated) ought to be abandoned for the one they give. We consider that in such cases our readers will be safe in taking their united verdict. Where the editors differ, it is not for us to offer any opinion. We are not forming a Greek text: had we done so, it would have been simply our own individual judg ment, with little or no weight; but we have sought to give our readers unversed in such matters the best guide we could. We know of nothing better for such than to be directed to the united judgment of those who have conscientiously laboured in this particular field.
