Download or read book The Great Rising of 1381 written by Alastair Dunn and published by Tempus Publishing, Limited. This book was released on 2002 with total page 200 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The Great Rising is a re-interpretation of the revolt, the rebels and their often colourful leaders, and is the first new history for nearly one hundred years. Alastair Dunn charts the causes of the Great Rising, and examines how the burgeoning economic expectations of the generation succeeding the Black Death were frustrated by the landlords' determined defense of serfdom, and the growing burden imposed upon the people by the crown, culminating in the hated Poll Taxes. He asks whether the Great Rising had a coherent set of aims linking its participants in different parts of England, follows the dramatic story of the rebels in London, and highlights the largely forgotten, but equally exciting story of rebellion in other parts of England."--BOOK JACKET.Title Summary field provided by Blackwell North America, Inc. Book Synopsis Writing and Rebellion by : Steven Justice
Download or read book Writing and Rebellion written by Steven Justice and published by Univ of California Press. This book was released on 2023-04-28 with total page 303 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this compelling account of the "peasants' revolt" of 1381, in which rebels burned hundreds of official archives and attacked other symbols of authority, Steven Justice demonstrates that the rebellion was not an uncontrolled, inarticulate explosion of peasant resentment but an informed and tactical claim to literacy and rule. Focusing on six brief, enigmatic texts written by the rebels themselves, Justice places the English peasantry within a public discourse from which historians, both medieval and modern, have thus far excluded them. He recreates the imaginative world of medieval villagers—how they worked and governed themselves, how they used official communications in unofficial ways, and how they produced a disciplined insurgent ideology.

Download or read book England, Arise written by Juliet Barker and published by Abacus. This book was released on 2015-09-03 with total page 528 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The dramatic and shocking events of the Peasants' Revolt of 1381 are to be the backdrop to Juliet Barker's latest book: a snapshot of what everyday life was like for ordinary people living in the middle ages. The same highly successful techniques she deployed inAgincourt and Conquest will this time be brought to bear on civilian society, from the humblest serf forced to provide slave-labour for his master in the fields, to the prosperous country goodwife brewing, cooking and spinning her distaff and the ambitious burgess expanding his business and his mental horizons in the town. The book will explore how and why such a diverse and unlikely group of ordinary men and women from every corner of England united in armed rebellion against church and state to demand a radical political agenda which, had it been implemented, would have fundamentally transformed English society and anticipated the French Revolution by four hundred years. The book will not only provide an important reassessment of the revolt itself but will also be an illuminating and original study of English medieval life at the time.

Book Synopsis Chaucer, Gower, and the Vernacular Rising by : Lynn Arner
Download or read book Chaucer, Gower, and the Vernacular Rising written by Lynn Arner and published by Penn State Press. This book was released on 2015-01-14 with total page 210 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Chaucer, Gower, and the Vernacular Rising examines the transmission of Greco-Roman and European literature into English during the late fourteenth and early fifteenth centuries, while literacy was burgeoning among men and women from the nonruling classes. This dissemination offered a radically democratizing potential for accessing, interpreting, and deploying learned texts. Focusing primarily on an overlooked sector of Chaucer’s and Gower’s early readership, namely, the upper strata of nonruling urban classes, Lynn Arner argues that Chaucer’s and Gower’s writings engaged in elaborate processes of constructing cultural expertise. These writings helped define gradations of cultural authority, determining who could contribute to the production of legitimate knowledge and granting certain socioeconomic groups political leverage in the wake of the English Rising of 1381. Chaucer, Gower, and the Vernacular Rising simultaneously examines Chaucer’s and Gower’s negotiations—often articulated at the site of gender—over poetics and over the roles that vernacular poetry should play in the late medieval English social formation. This study investigates how Chaucer’s and Gower’s texts positioned poetry to become a powerful participant in processes of social control.

Book Synopsis Class Conflict and the Crisis of Feudalism by : Rodney Hilton
Download or read book Class Conflict and the Crisis of Feudalism written by Rodney Hilton and published by A&C Black. This book was released on 1985-07-01 with total page 361 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The conflict between landlords and peasants over the appropriation of the surplus product of the peasant holding was a prime mover in the evolution of medieval society. In this collection of essays Rodney Hilton looks at the economic context within which these conflicts took place. He seeks to explain the considerable variations in the size, composition and management of landed estates and investigates the nature of medieval urbanisation, a consequence of the development of both local commodity production and long distance trade in luxury goods. By setting the broader economic context – the nature of the peasant and landlord economies and the commercialisation of peasant production – Hilton's essays enable a thorough understanding of the relationship between landlords and peasants in medieval society.
