It thanked the king for his gracious intentions, and for his generous endow ment of the new chair with an appointment so ample as well nigh to equal the stipends of all our other professors put together'. It thanked him still more warmly for supplementing the educational system of the university where it was weakest. Book excerpt: The Transmission of Culture in Early Modern Europe focuses on the ways in which culture is moved from one generation or group to another, not by exact replication but by accretion or revision. The contributors to the volume each consider how the passing of historical information is an organic process that allows for the transformation of previously accepted truth. The volume covers a broad and fascinating scope of subjects presented by leading scholars. Anthony Grafton's contribution on the fifteenth-century forger Annius of Viterbo emphasizes the role of imagination in the classical revival; Lisa Jardine demonstrates the way in which Erasmus helped turn a technical and rebarbative book by Rudolph Agricola into a sixteenth-century success story; Alan Charles Kors finds the roots of Enlightenment atheism in the works of French Catholic theologians; Donald R. Kelley follows the legal idea of "custom" from its formulation by the ancients to its assimilation into the modern social sciences; and Lawrence Stone shows how changes in legal action against female adultery between 1670 and 1857 reflect basic shifts in English moral values.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The English Historical Review, 1909, Vol. 24 Licinius had been equally active during the period of probably about fifteen months since the attack upon the Goths in 323. He had gathered a formidable army at Adrianople. A hundred and fifty thousand infantry and fifteen thousand cavalry were ready to oppose the hundred and twenty thousand under Constantine. These troops were mostly from Phrygia and Cappadocia. His numerical superiority at sea was still more marked. Egypt had furnished 130 ships, Cyprus and Lycia 110. These, with others from the coasts of Asia Minor, made up a fleet of three hundred and fifty fighting vessels, which Zosimus calls triremes. They were placed under the command of Amandus, a leader of proved capacity. Not for upwards of a century - not indeed since the death of Severus in 211 - had the empire seen such large armies collected for civil warfare nor learned of the assembly of such powerful fleets. All preparations gave promise of an ardent struggle both on land and sea. Every one was ready by May 321 for the opening of the campaign which put the causes in dispute to the arbitrament of war. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The 1760s were a period of great agitation in the American colonies. The policies implemented by the British resulted in an outcry from the Americans that inaugurated the radical ideas leading to the Revolution in 1775. John Dickinson led the way in the "war of ink" between America and Britain, which saw over 1,000 pamphlets and essays written both for and against British policy. King George III, the new British monarch, wrote extensively on the role of Britain in the colonial world and sought to find a middle way between the quickly rising feelings on both sides of the debate. This book tells the story of this radical decade as it occurred in writing, drawing from primary sources and rarely seen exchanges.

Book excerpt: In a ‘post-everything’ world, we have felt more pain than happiness in building and tampering with borders. The term ‘border’ has been expanded to become a ploy for grim, chauvinistic, self-flattery, and ultra-nationalist bigotry. We have also faced notorious coverage of the ‘border’ in the media worldwide, and its diverse forms have been extensively deployed in cinema and literature. Centering on a wide range of literary and cinematic genres, the contributors to this volume explore and explain distinct theoretical and scholarly arguments to promote research on literary, linguistic, and media representations of the word ‘border.’
