Book excerpt: Excerpt from The English Church in Other Lands, or the Spiritual Expansion of England To compress into a small book the story of a work which has had the world for its field, and has been carried on for more than three centuries, I have found to be no easy task. While I have remembered the obligation of brevity, I have endeavoured to omit nothing that appeared to be essential to a clear understanding of the subject. I have endeavoured to set forth what has been the missionary work, not only of the Anglican Communion, but of all the sections into which English Christianity is divided. I am glad to recognise and to hold in honour the zeal which prompts, and the practical wisdom which directs, the foreign missionary work of Nonconformist bodies, among whom the duty of taking a personal share in the spread of the Gospel seems to be recognised by all classes as a necessary part of their religious life. Book Synopsis Ecclesial Diversity in Chinese Christianity by : Alexander Chow
Download or read book Ecclesial Diversity in Chinese Christianity written by Alexander Chow and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2021-07-27 with total page 229 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume explores Chinese Christianity—or Chinese Christianities—in a variety of forms and expressions, including those from outside the geopolitical boundaries of mainland China. Advancing a multi-disciplinary approach to the study of Chinese churches, the essays collected here engage many historical, sociological, cultural, and theological contingencies. The collection includes historical discussions of the early-20th-century encounters of Protestant and Catholic missionaries in China and the rise of Christianity among Malaysian Chinese and British Chinese communities. Essays examine the thinking of K. H. Ting (or Ding Guangxun), often remembered for his leadership in the Three-Self Patriotic Movement in the 1980s–90s, by revisiting his earlier theology and approach to the Bible in the 1930s–50s. These retrospectives give way to contemporary explorations into how Chinese churches negotiate their urban identities amidst the complexities of globalization in Chengdu and Shanghai, as well as in Vancouver, Canada. Taken as a whole, this collection offers close examinations into various aspects of Chinese Christianity’s complex picture, helping readers to recognize the many shades and colors of the global Chinese Church.

Download or read book God's Empire written by Hilary M. Carey and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2011-01-06 with total page 447 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In God's Empire, Hilary M. Carey charts Britain's nineteenth-century transformation from Protestant nation to free Christian empire through the history of the colonial missionary movement. This wide-ranging reassessment of the religious character of the second British empire provides a clear account of the promotional strategies of the major churches and church parties which worked to plant settler Christianity in British domains. Based on extensive use of original archival and rare published sources, the author explores major debates such as the relationship between religion and colonization, church-state relations, Irish Catholics in the empire, the impact of the Scottish Disruption on colonial Presbyterianism, competition between Evangelicals and other Anglicans in the colonies, and between British and American strands of Methodism in British North America.
