Anthony Blond's scandalous expose of the life of the Caesars is a must-read for all interested in what really went on in ancient Rome. Julius Caesar is usually presented as a glorious general when in fact he was an arrogant charmer and a swank; Augustus was so conscious of his height that he put lifts in his sandals. But they were nothing compared to Caligula, Claudius and Nero. This book is fascinating reading, eye-opening in its revelations and effortlessly entertaining.

There is a roadside tea garden where spirits gather by night to carry on flirtations until they fade into the dawn, and there is a tavern in Bartin where men make their lost illusions of love come alive by thinking of them. The narrator exchanges places with Night for twenty-four hours to find out what it means to be the unsleeping Night, the guardian of dreams. The slot machines in a casino provide love advice and clues to the multiple realities of romance, history, and everyday life. A mixture of drama and fable, confession and memoir, the fabulous and the prosaic, The Emperor Tea Garden is a place where you have never been and always are. As you turn each page of Eray’s work, you are in a different world, sometimes several at the same time.

Imagine, if you will, the distant mists of antiquity, when empires were yet to be forged, and civilizations were in their tender infancy. In this age of wonder and discovery, Emperor Yao emerged, leaving an indelible mark upon the tapestry of humanity. Our journey commences by peering through the mists of time, into the heart of ancient China. This storied land, replete with emerald valleys and winding rivers, was a cradle of culture, innovation, and aspirations. While history and legend intertwine like vines, our quest remains unwaveringly focused on uncovering the essence of Yao's life. The pages of this book shall illuminate his footsteps as they tread upon the sacred grounds of leadership. With a heart devoted to benevolence and wisdom as his guiding star, Emperor Yao's reign was characterized by principles that continue to resonate through the ages. In these chapters, we shall explore the facets of Yao's world. We shall stand witness to his ascent to the throne, a journey laden with challenges and opportunities. From his earliest days to his enduring legacy, we shall traverse the path paved by his vision and virtue. Together, we shall delve into the governance that defined his reign, the policies that nurtured prosperity, and the wisdom that shaped his decisions. We shall listen to the whispers of diplomats, trace the furrows of plows in fertile fields, and stand upon the dikes and dams that tamed unruly waters. Yet, dear reader, our voyage encompasses more than just the tangible. For Emperor Yao's beliefs extended beyond governance, touching upon the spiritual and the mystical. We shall peer into the realm of his faith, where the earthly and the divine coalesce, painting a portrait of a ruler deeply connected to the cosmos. So, with hearts open and minds eager, let us set forth on this expedition to know, to understand, and to appreciate the life and times of Emperor Yao. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With stunning photographs from the ice edge, a firsthand account of a researcher’s time in Antarctica and of the perilous journeys of the world’s largest penguin species: the iconic emperor. Nearly all emperor penguin colonies are extremely remote; of the sixty-six known, fewer than thirty have been visited by humans, and even fewer have been the subject of successful research programs. One of the largest known emperor penguin colonies is found on a narrow band of sea ice attached to the Antarctic continent. In Journeys with Emperors, Gerald L. Kooyman and Jim Mastro take us to this far-flung colony in the Ross Sea, showing us how scientists gained access to it, and what they learned while living among the penguins as they raised their chicks. The primary mission was to record the birds’ activities at sea, and the data revealed important aspects of emperor penguin behavior and physiology: for instance, that in the course of hunting for food, some of the penguins dive to depths of greater than five hundred meters (a third of a mile, which is deeper than for any other diving bird). The researchers also discovered that, crucially, most of the emperor’s life is actually spent at sea, with fledged chicks and adults making separate, perilous journeys through icy water. When chick nurturing is complete, the fledglings abandon the colony in large groups, heading north to the Southern Ocean. The adults leave at the same time, traveling one thousand kilometers eastward across the Ross Sea to a sea-ice sanctuary for molting. During this journey, they must gain enough weight to survive the month-long molt, when every feather is replaced and the birds cannot enter the water to feed. After the molt, many if not most return to the colony to breed once again. For the males, this means another fast—this time for 120 days as they incubate their eggs. The nearness of the colony to the ice edge spared the penguins the long, energy-draining march for which other colonies are well-known. It also allowed researchers to observe the penguins’ departures to and arrivals from their foraging journeys, as well as their dangerous interactions with leopard seals and killer whales. Featuring original color photographs and complemented with online videos, Journeys with Emperors is both an eye-opening overview of the emperor penguin’s life and a thrilling tale of scientific discovery in one of the most remote, harsh, and beautiful places on Earth.

Book excerpt: “Young Elizabeth Balcombe, or Betsy to friends and family, found life on the remote island of St Helena intolerably dull. Most fourteen-year-olds would. Her father had been posted to that unforgiving station in the Atlantic and, being a family man, he took his family with him. Life was bleak in Balcombe’s bungalow on the fringe of James Town. But then, in October 1815, the situation was transformed by the arrival of an unusual visitor. Napoleon Bonaparte, one-time master of Europe, now prisoner and exile, stepped ashore. The Balcombes, like all the islanders, were amazed. And even more so when Napoleon, taking a fancy to their bungalow (the Briars) moved in with them. Betsy, overcoming her surprise at sharing her home with an emperor, delighted in his company and the two became firm friends. Miss Betsy Balcombe made the most of her time with the world’s most famous prisoner, keenly observing all around her, noting down conversations, recording moods. The result is a unique set of memoirs which records in astonishing detail an almost unbelievable story. That of how a precocious teenager and an emperor talked, argued, played, confided and teased their way through grim years of exile on the barren rock of St Helena.”-Print ed.
