Book excerpt: “The Enchanted wrapped its beautiful and terrible fingers around me from the first page and refused to let go after the last. A wondrous book that finds transcendence in the most unlikely of places. . . . So dark yet so exquisite.” — Erin Morgenstern, author of The Night Circus An astonishing and redemptive novel for readers of Alice Sebold and Toni Morrison, told from the point of view of a convict whose magical interpretations of prison life allow him to find absolute joy while isolated from the rest of humanity and a female investigator who experiences her own personal salvation in her work as a death penalty investigator. This is an enchanted place. Others don’t see it but I do. The enchanted place is a high security prison and is relayed through the eyes of an inmate on death row who escapes his surroundings by immersing himself in books, and by re-imagining the world that surrounds him. Instead of focusing on the cloudy medical vines that snake across the floor, empty and waiting for the warden’s finger to press the red buttons, our narrator sees golden horses as they run deep under the earth, heat flowing like molten metal from their backs. A woman and fallen priest haunt the prison halls--an unnamed female investigator only known as the Lady who is known for discovering information relating to soon-to-be executed inmates’ backgrounds that can be used to overturn their sentences. She is put on the case of a man named York and as she digs into his past, the experience brings up ghosts of her own and threatens to destroy everything that she has come to know about the enchanted place. The Enchanted is a magical novel about redemption, the humanity that can lie within what is monstrous, and the human capacity to transcend and survive.

Book Synopsis Three Children's Novels by Christopher Pearse Cranch by : Christopher Pearse Cranch
Download or read book Three Children's Novels by Christopher Pearse Cranch written by Christopher Pearse Cranch and published by University of Georgia Press. This book was released on 2010-06-01 with total page 196 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In his day, Christopher Pearse Cranch (1813-1892) was a well-known figure in American arts and letters, with close ties to the New England Transcendentalists. Though Cranch made his mark in fields ranging from poetry and journalism to caricature and oil painting, his most enduring achievements are his novels for children. Collected here for the first time in one volume, these three works - The Last of the Huggermuggers, Kobboltozo: A Sequel to the Last of the Huggermuggers, and The Legend of Dr. Theophilus; or, The Enchanted Clothes - establish Cranch as a pioneer in American fantasy fiction. Until now, these texts have been largely inaccessible. Huggermuggers (1866) and Kobboltozo (1867) went through several printings during the last half of the nineteenth century but have not been reissued since 1901. The manuscript of Cranch's third and last novel, The Legend of Dr. Theophilus, disappeared around 1870 and did not resurface until the 1980s. It has never before been published. As the editors explain in their introduction, Cranch was the first American author to write novel-length works solely for children, and to fuse elements of fantasy and adventure. In an era when most juvenile books emphasized moral rectitude and acquiescence to adult authority, Cranch put a higher premium on humor and the imaginative aspects of storytelling. Huggermuggers and Kobboltozo relate the still-entertaining escapades of a shipwrecked American boy, Jacky Cable, and the gentle giants and evil dwarfs who inhabit the unknown island on which he is marooned. In Dr. Theophilus Cranch takes children to a faraway place where the sun cannot penetrate the fog and where a suit of enchanted clothes can cause mayhem and grief. True to the novel's closing lines - "For the young, a magic story. For the old, an allegory" - Cranch also satirizes the medical profession and his society's stunting reverence for the past. The editors note superficial parallels between Cranch's novels and Robinson Crusoe, Gulliver's Travels, and the English "Jack Tales," but they believe that Cranch's stories actually belong more to the tradition of Hans Christian Andersen and the Brothers Grimm, earlier masters at combining elements of fantasy and adventure. They also detect in Cranch's heroes a thoroughly American self-reliance and resourcefulness. Written during an important transition in the history of American children's literature, these three novels are of special interest to scholars of American Romanticism. Perhaps most important of all they have not lost their attraction for young readers. The presence in this volume of eleven of Cranch's original illustrations for Huggermuggers and Kobboltozo only enhances the stories' imaginative appeal.

Book Synopsis Women's Writing in Canada by : Patricia Demers
Download or read book Women's Writing in Canada written by Patricia Demers and published by University of Toronto Press. This book was released on 2005-12-15 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this introduction to the diversity and scope of the writing by women in England from the beginning of the sixteenth century to the restoration of the monarchy in 1660, Patricia Demers discusses the creative realities of women writers' accomplishments and the cultural conditions under which they wrote. There were deep suspicions and restrictions surrounding the education of women during this period, and thus the contributions of women to literature, and to the print industry itself, are largely unknown. This wide-ranging examination of the genres of early modern women's writing embraces translation (from Latin, Greek, and French) in the fields of theological discourse, romance and classical tragedy, original meditations and prayers, letters and diaries, poetry, closet drama, advice manuals, and prophecies and polemics. A close study of six major authors – Mary Sidney, Aemilia Lanyer, Elizabeth Tanfield Cary, Lady Mary Wroth, Margaret Cavendish, and Katherine Philips – explores their work as poets, dramatists, and romantic fiction writers. Demers invites readers to savour the subtlety and daring with which these women authors made writing an expressly social craft.
