Book excerpt: Summary: In "The Enchanted Forest: Finn's Expedition," we follow brave and curious Finn as he uses a strange old map, he finds in his attic to find a magical forest. The fourteen parts of the book take readers to a world full of wonder, hardship, and lessons about courage, the natural world, and taking care of the environment. In the Enchanted Forest, Finn first learns about its power when he meets Willow, a talking tree who will be his guide for the rest of his journey. Finn's journey is full of things that teach him how all living things rely on each other and how important it is to make smart choices. For example, the wise old owl on the Bridge of Decisions and the reflected waters of the River of Reflections show him glimpses of the past and the future. Finn goes to many magical places in the forest as the story goes on. In the Meadow of Miracles, a fairy talks about how fragile the ecosystem is, and in the Whispering Winds, he learns how important it is to talk to others. The Cave of Echoes and the meeting with the Forest Guardian bring out the themes of self-reflection, responsibility, and caring for the environment. Finn has a hard time on his journey. He learns that being strong means facing your fears and getting through them in The Challenge of the Shadows. Both the Valley of Flowers and the Festival of Lights teach important lessons about being thankful, having fun, working together, and having community pride. Finn changes as his trip comes to an end. With stories from his faraway travels, he comes back home determined to protect the earth and more aware of it than before. People are moved by Finn's story to care for and protect the environment, taking the forest's beauty and lessons to new places. "The Enchanted Forest: Finn's Expedition" is a thrilling adventure book that also teaches important lessons about bravery, protecting the environment, and appreciating the beauty of nature. The story is a warning about the possible outcomes of our actions and how important it is to keep the world's magic alive for future generations. Chapter 1: The Mysterious Chart That's not how Finn was; he was an explorer first and foremost. His mind was sharp and interested, and he was always looking for new information. His house was full of beautiful things he had picked up on his trips, like stones that sparkled in the sun, shells from faraway beaches, and leaves of all shapes and colors. But Finn quickly found something truly amazing, which led him on his most bold journey yet. Finn found an old, faded map in the back part of his attic, hidden under a bunch of old books and toys that he had forgotten about. But this wasn't any old map; "The Enchanted Forest" was written across the top in big, enticing letters, and the edges were worn down from use. Finn was very interested in the map because it showed woods, rivers, and interesting symbols that he wanted to learn more about. By following the winding path through the trees, Finn was able to find a place marked with an “X," which he thought meant the location of something supernatural and private. Finn was most interested in the picture of a secret entrance, which was an old tree whose roots were twisted into a maze-like shape. This doorway was meant for the brave person who was willing to go into the unknown. Not everyone was able to find it. Finn found himself getting very excited. He was set on seeing the mysterious forest for himself. Finn had a hard time sleeping that night. His mind is filled with images of what he might find. Would there be animals muttering secrets in the woods or trees putting together words that make sense? He might come across a river that gave him a glimpse of what lay ahead. It looked like there were a lot of options. As the first rays of light crept into Finn's room, he was wide awake, and his eyes were bright with excitement. He put the strange map, some food, a notebook, and a flashlight in a small bag. Finn was scared and excited at the same time, but he knew that every journey was tough. After taking a deep breath, he left his house and carried the plan as he walked toward the mysterious forest. Finn was about to start his trip, and he was sure it would be the most exciting thing he had ever done. At first, the plan took him down well-known streets, but soon he was at the edge of the woods, which meant the real adventure had begun. The map showed that the opening to the woods was tucked away, ready for a brave person like Finn to explore its depths. As Finn went into the woods, he was excited to learn more about its magic and confident that he could handle any problems that might come up. Chapter 2: The Hidden Doorway. Finn had a tough time finding the secret door. He had never walked that far in such a long time. Sometimes the road wasn't clear, so he had to find his own way through tall grass and heavy bushes. Finn, on the other hand, stayed firm. He thought back to the map and the strange "X" that showed where the magical forest's opening was. He walked around with interest and anticipation, looking forward to the wonders that were in store for him. After what seemed like hours, Finn finally got to a place that matched what the map said it was. It was a nice area that was far from the main roads. A thick, green wall of ivy stretched out in front of him and looked like a doorway to another world. Finn was shocked when he found out about it. He thought that this must be the hidden way to get into the Enchanted Forest. Finn took a deep breath, reached out, and pulled the ivy away slowly. It felt like going into a book. As soon as he went through the ivy, everything changed. He thought he was seeing the trees and flowers for the first time because they were so brightly colored. The light was also better. It smelled like blooms and something else, something lovely. The air was cool and tasty. Finn stayed for a while and watched everything. The Enchanted Forest was the most beautiful place he could have thought of. Every leaf and breeze in this pristine place seemed to be telling secrets. Finn was amazed and happy. This was the kind of place he had always dreamed existed, and he was about to find it.

Book excerpt: In this country the term Finn is generally restricted to the natives of Finland, with perhaps those of Esthonia thrown in. But besides these Western Finns there are other small nationalities in Central and Northern Russia, such as the Erza and Mok_a Mordvins, the _eremis, Votiaks, Permians, and Z_rians, to whom the term is very properly applied, though with the qualifying adjectiveÑEastern. Except by Folklorists, little attention is paid in Great Britain to these peoples, and much that is written of them abroad finds no response here, the 'silver streak' acting, it would seem, as a non-conductor to such unsensational and feeble vibrations. Although the languages of the Eastern and Western Finns differ as much perhaps among themselves as the various members of the Aryan group, the craniological and physical differences between any two Finnish groups is very much less than between the Latin and the Teutonic groups, for instance. All the Finns live nearly under the same latitudes, and in pre- and proto-historic times, which are not so very remote, the differences in customs, religious and other beliefs, could not have been very great. This is important; it allows us to supplement what is missing or defective in one Finnish group by what is more complete in another, with far greater certainty than when dealing under similar circumstances with the Aryan-speaking groups. In the first five chapters of the first volume I have tried, with the combined aid of craniology, arch¾ology, ethnography, and philology, brought up to date, to sketch as succinctly as possible the pre- and proto-historic history of the Eastern and Western Finns, showing the various stages of civilisation to which they successively advanced after contact with higher civilisations, at different periods of their evolution from neolithic times to the middle ages. Chapters six and seven contain an analysis of the beliefs of the Western Finns, so far as they can be gathered from the text of the Magic Songs in the second volume; and a perusal of them will facilitate the comprehension of the Magic Songs themselves. The second volume, containing 639 magic songs, some of considerable length, classed under 233 headings, is a translation of a very large portion of the Suomen kansan muinaisia Loitsurunoja, edited and published by the late Dr. Lšnnrot in 1880. As the translation was made for Folklorists it is as literal as possible, without additions, without subtractions, and the vocabulary employed is in conformity with the subject, with the humble social status and homely surroundings of the original composers. The metre of the original is the same as in the Kalevala, which cannot be reproduced in a language like English, where the ictus of the metre has to coincide with the natural stress-accent of the words. But where it could be done without loss of exactness a certain rhythm, generally three beats to a line, is given in the translation, though to save space the lines are printed in prose form.

Clues to the movements of the eastern Vikings may be found not only in Icelandic skaldic verse and runic inscriptions on memorial stones, but in such unexpected places as a Romanian chalk quarry near the Black Sea, among the carved stones of ancient Thrace and in Constantinople itself, the Miklagard of northern literature.

Book excerpt: Some of the world's oldest and richest folk traditions come from a country that most Americans know very little about-Finland (or Suomi). The fifth largest country in Europe (in land size), Finland is home to the third true folk epic, The Kalevala (The Land of Heroes). It is a country of lush forests and sparkling clear lakes where, in the northern regions, reindeer still roam. This collection introduces readers to the fascinating culture, history, geology, and folk literature of Finland. After a historical and cultural overview, the authors present 20 representative stories-including ancient tales from The Kalevala, humorous and moral tales (e.g., The Selfish Housewife and The Magic Wish)-and a fictionalized account of a witch trial in the 1600s. Holiday traditions, proverbs and sayings, and traditional recipes embellish this collection and will tantalize and intrigue readers. Color plates illustrate the land, the people, and artistic traditions of this wondrous people.

Book excerpt: A HANDBOOK FOR LIFE The Enchiridion, or Handbook of Epictetus, is a short manual of Stoic ethical advice which was compiled by Arrian, who was a 2nd-century disciple of the Greek philosopher Epictetus. Epictetus lived in ancient Greece from 55 to 135 AD. Born into slavery, he endured a permanent physical disability. While enslaved, he studied Stoic philosophy. After attaining his freedom, Epictetus remained a fervent believer of Stoic thought and spent his entire career teaching philosophy and advising a daily regimen of self-examination. He encouraged his students to acknowledge good and evil only in the things they had control over, and not in the circumstances that cannot be controlled by any human being. His pupil Arrian, collected his teacher's philosophical insights and advice and turned them into this popular guide of Stoic wisdom - an instruction manual for a tranquil life. The Enchiridion begins with the statement that "Of things, some depend upon ourselves, others do not depend upon ourselves."Thus, Epictetus makes a distinction between our own internal world and the external world beyond our control. Arrian focused his attention on Epictetus's work applying philosophy in daily life. The word "encheiridion" is an adjective meaning "in the hand" and when coupled with the word "book", means a handy book or hand-book. In the Discourses, Epictetus often speaks of principles which his pupils should have "ready to hand." Thus, the book is a manual to show the way to achieve mental freedom and happiness in all areas of life.

Beginning with the dim prehistory of the mythical gods and their descendants, Heimskringla recounts the history of the kings of Norway through the reign of Olaf Haraldsson, who became Norway’s patron saint. Once found in most homes and schools and still regarded as a national treasure, Heimskringla influenced the thinking and literary style of Scandinavia over several centuries. “[Snorri Sturluson] speaks—as almost no other historian ever has spoken—with the authority of a man whose masterful skills would have made him one of the formidable, foremost in any of the events he records. So he saturates even remotely past happenings with a gripping first-hand quality...Hollander’s translation is very good, fresh on every page . . . Wherever you open the book, the life grips you and you read on.” —Ted Hughes, New York Review of Books “Among the many contributions to world literature that ancient Iceland has given us, Heimskringla stands out as one of the truly monumental works. Among medieval European histories in the vernacular it has no equal.” —Modern Philology

Book excerpt: Animals in Religion explores the role of animals within a wide range of religious traditions. Exploring countless stories and myths passed down orally and in many religious texts, Barbara Allen—herself a practicing minister—offers a fascinating history of the ways animals have figured in our spiritual lives, whether they have been Christian, Jewish, Muslim, or any number of lesser-known religions. Some of the figures here will be familiar, such as St. Francis of Assisi, famous for his accord with animals, or that beloved remover of obstacles, Ganesha, the popular elephant god in the Hindu pantheon. Delving deeper, Allen highlights the numerous ways that our religious practices have honored and relied upon our animal brethren. She examines the principle of ahimsa, or nonviolence, which has Jains sweeping the pathways before them so as not to kill any insects, as well as the similar principle in Judaism of ts’ar ba’alei chayim and the notion in some sects of Islam that all living creatures are Muslim. From ancient Egypt to the Druids to the indigenous cultures of North America and Australia, Allen tells story after story that emphasizes the same message: all species are spiritually connected.
