Book excerpt: The Enchiridion or Handbook of Epictetus is a short manual of Stoic ethical advice compiled by Arrian, a 2nd-century disciple of the Greek philosopher Epictetus. Although the content is mostly derived from the Discourses of Epictetus, it is not a summary of the Discourses but rather a compilation of practical precepts. Eschewing metaphysics, Arrian focuses his attention on Epictetus's work applying philosophy to daily life. Thus, the book is a manual to show the way to achieve mental freedom and happiness in all circumstances. The Enchiridion was well-known in the ancient world, and in the medieval period, it was specially adapted for use in Greek-speaking monasteries. In the 15th century it was translated into Latin, and then, with the advent of printing, into multiple European languages. It reached the height of popularity in the 17th century, in parallel with the Neo-stoicism movement.

Epictetus's teachings rank among the greatest wisdom texts of human civilization. Epictetus taught that philosophy is a way of life and not just a theoretical discipline. To Epictetus, all external events are beyond our control; we should accept calmly and dispassionately whatever happens. However, individuals are responsible for their own actions, which they can examine and control through rigorous self-discipline. By putting into practice the ninety-three wise instructions that make up The Art of Living, readers learn to successfully meet the challenges of everyday life.

Book excerpt: No writings of Epictetus himself are really known. His discourses were transcribed and compiled by his pupil Arrian (author of the Anabasis Alexandri). The main work is The Discourses, four books of which have been preserved (out of an original eight). Arrian also compiled a popular digest, entitled the Enchiridion, or Handbook. In a preface to the Discourses, addressed to Lucius Gellius, Arrian states that "whatever I heard him say I used to write down, word for word, as best I could, endeavouring to preserve it as a memorial, for my own future use, of his way of thinking and the frankness of his speech."

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Contains The Discourses/Fragments/Enchiridion 'I must die. But must I die bawling?' Epictetus, a Greek Stoic and freed slave, ran a thriving philosophy school in Nicopolis in the early second century AD. His animated discussions were celebrated for their rhetorical wizardry and were written down by Arrian, his most famous pupil. The Discourses argue that happiness lies in learning to perceive exactly what is in our power to change and what is not, and in embracing our fate to live in harmony with god and nature. In this personal, practical guide to the ethics of Stoicism and moral self-improvement, Epictetus tackles questions of freedom and imprisonment, illness and fear, family, friendship and love. Translated and Edited with an Introduction by Robert Dobbin

Book excerpt: A series of extracts from the teachings of an ancient Greek stoic philosopher, as written down by his pupil c. 108 AD. Captured by his student Arian, the discourses of Epictetus, along with his Encheiridion, or “manual,” are brought to life with the humor and conversational tone the ancient stoic philosopher used to bring his ideas to the widest audience possible. With wisdom on how to live a life of integrity, self-management, and personal freedom, Epictetus draws on the well of stoicism to offer virtues and values that have proven influential throughout Western history.

Book excerpt: From the team that brought you The Obstacle Is the Way and Ego Is the Enemy, a daily devotional of Stoic meditations—an instant Wall Street Journal and USA Today Bestseller. Why have history's greatest minds—from George Washington to Frederick the Great to Ralph Waldo Emerson, along with today's top performers from Super Bowl-winning football coaches to CEOs and celebrities—embraced the wisdom of the ancient Stoics? Because they realize that the most valuable wisdom is timeless and that philosophy is for living a better life, not a classroom exercise. The Daily Stoic offers 366 days of Stoic insights and exercises, featuring all-new translations from the Emperor Marcus Aurelius, the playwright Seneca, or slave-turned-philosopher Epictetus, as well as lesser-known luminaries like Zeno, Cleanthes, and Musonius Rufus. Every day of the year you'll find one of their pithy, powerful quotations, as well as historical anecdotes, provocative commentary, and a helpful glossary of Greek terms. By following these teachings over the course of a year (and, indeed, for years to come) you'll find the serenity, self-knowledge, and resilience you need to live well.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Byrhtferth of Ramsey was one of the outstanding scholars of the late Anglo-Saxon Church, the pupil of Abbo of Fleury, probably the most learned man in the Europe of his day. From Abbo, Byrhtferth learned the intricacies of medieval date-reckoning (computus), as well as familiarity with the syllabus of the quadrivium (astronomy, arithmetic, harmony, geometry). The Enchiridion, completed in 1011, is a handbook designed to explain the complexities of computus to young monks in his charge, but Byrhtferth disgresses widely in discussions of metrics and rhetoric, as well as his scientific intersts. As such, it is a work in the forefront of Anglo-Saxon scholarship. This edition of the Enchiridion supersedes that of S. J. Crawford, published for the Society in 1929 as vol. 177 of the Original Series. The new edition contains a full introduction, describing the nature of Byrhtferth's schooling at Ramsey. The text is presented with a facing translation, and is followed by a detailed commentary. The edition also includes the text of Byrhtferth's Latin treatise on computus, which has never been printed before. The Latin text is the model for the Enchiridion, which cannot be understood without reference to it.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Erfurt Enchiridion of 1524 is the earliest protestant hymn book. As it states, in the past many had spent “the whole day standing in the choir, shouting like the priests of Baal in unclear cries”; even “members of Collegiate Churches and Monasteries had often not understood what they sing or read”, and had “cried like the forest-donkeys to a deaf God”. The Erfurt Enchiridion aimed to change this - and was a remarkable success. It was reprinted repeatedly, its melodies were set to four-part music by Johann Sebastian Bach and others, and it became the core of many later hymn books. To enable today’s choirs to understand and sing the hymns in the Erfurt Enchiridion, we reprint the original and present for many of them Bach’s four-part settings with traditional singable English translations, thus supporting to “a continuous practice and contemplation of spiritual hymns and psalms”, as did the Erfurt Enchiridion in 1524.
