Book excerpt: "Emily and s Quest is the grand finale of the Lucy Maud Montgomery trilogy, set before World War I on Prince Edward Island, Canada. The orphan in "Emily of New Moon" and the hopeful student in "Emily Climbs" is transformed into a young woman seeking success and love. At the beginning of the story, Emily believes that everyone has abandoned her at New Moon Farms. Best friend Ilsa Burnley has taken off for school in Montreal, suitor Perry Miller is studying Law in Charlottetown. Most annoyingly, Teddy Kent, also left her to study actor and s craft. All she has left is a desire to write and her mentor, the cynical and manipulative Dean Priest. First Emily has no luck with her book, then, suffered a near fatal illness. Lonely and near despair, her only option seems to be Dean and s offer of marriage. But, a dramatic second-sight experience will offer her a vision of a different future. If the endpoint of Emily and s quest may be predictable, but the journey is not. Emily will struggle to sell her first book while dealing with some comical distractions. Emily and s relationship woes will continue to a cleverly written and entertaining ending. Lucy Maud Montgomery drew heavily on her own experiences as a struggling writer in the "Emily" series; the story has some real bite, along with the author and s characteristic humor and gentle wisdom (character of Dean was inspired by her abusive awful husband and her dread of having sex with him). "Emily and s Quest" is very highly recommended to her fans.

Book excerpt: Emily Climbs is the second in a series of novels by Lucy Maud Montgomery. It was first published in 1925. While the legal battle with Montgomery's publishing company (L.C. Page) continued, Montgomery's husband Ewan MacDonald continued to suffer clinical depression. Montgomery, tired of writing the Anne series, created a new heroine[1] named Emily. At the same time as writing, Montgomery was also copying her journal from her early years. The biographical elements heavily influenced the Emily trilogy.

Book excerpt: BY A REMARKABLE CANADIAN WRITER. The beloved author of Anne of Green Gables continues the adventures of Emily Starr, L. M. Montgomery's own favourite character, in Emily Climbs, the second instalment of the Emily of New Moon trilogy. Emily never imagined Aunt Elizabeth would allow her to go to high school in Shrewsbury, and she's thrilled, especially as her close friends Ilse, Teddy and Perry will be there. But there are certain conditions: for the whole three years Emily must board with hateful Aunt Ruth, and she must promise to stop writing stories. To Emily, this is unthinkable, but she wants an education, and reluctantly agrees. With the move from her beloved home at New Moon to Aunt Ruth's house, Emily's world is turned upside down. Not only must she prove herself at school, despite rejection and jealousy, but she can no longer count on her friends. Her happy childhood friendships - especially with Teddy and Perry - start to turn into something more complicated and in a small-town, the merest hint of gossip can cause scandal. Heart-rending, magical and utterly unforgettable, Emily's story continues in Emily's Quest, also available from Virago Modern Classics.

Through a series of adventures, Emily is furnished with materials to write stories and poems, and even sees begins to success. Book excerpt: Emily of New Moon is the first in a series of novels by Lucy Maud Montgomery about an orphan girl growing up in Canada. It was first published in 1923.Emily Starr never knew what it was to be lonely--until her beloved father died. Now Emily's an orphan, and her mother's snobbish relatives are taking her to live with them at New Moon Farm. She's sure she won't be happy. Emily deals with stiff, stern Aunt Elizabeth and her malicious classmates by holding her head high and using her quick wit. Things begin to change when she makes friends, with Teddy, who does marvelous drawings; with Perry, who's sailed all over the world with his father yet has never been to school; and above all, with Ilse, a tomboy with a blazing temper. Amazingly, Emily finds New Moon beautiful and fascinating. With new friends and adventures, Emily might someday think of herself as Emily of New Moon. Even more so than L.M. Montgomery's Anne of Green Gables series, her Emily of New Moon trilogy novels (Emily of New Moon, Emily Climbs and Emily's Quest) have always been absolutely and utterly personal favourites, and mostly so because while I have definitely and certainly enjoyed reading about Anne Shirley, her bubbly extrovertedness is not and can never be even remotely as close to me and to my own rather internal and quiet personality as equally imaginative and dreamy as Anne Shirley but also considerably more introverted Emily Byrd Starr. For indeed, Emily is absolutely and totally I, and a character, a persona to whom I can therefore relate much better and with considerably more ease than to either Anne Shirley and yes also to Emily's main sidekick and best friend Ilse Burnley who most certainly is an enjoyable and interestingly enough depicted character but who is also much too external and often considerably too all over the place, even bordering on the extreme for my personal reading tastes.
