Book excerpt: Robbie Robertson was a ruthless ex-soldier from Los Angeles. He had become the leader of a gang of bank robbers. He, however, had never taken part in anyone of the robberies, even though he took most of the loots for himself. The rest of the gang had had enough of him and decided they were taking off to Jamaica without his knowledge after one final heist in which a security guard was killed. Robbie was angry when he found out what had happened and vowed to find them if it took every cent he had. He found out where they were and he went there and employed the services of two of Jamaica's most notorious criminals and together, they eliminated his cronies one by one. But Robbie didn't stop there; he went about wiping out all of the witnesses, who could identify him if he were caught, including the two notorious gunmen, whom he had employed. But he made one mistake, or rather two, when he left cigarettes butts on two crime scenes.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Thomas Jefferson's writings on morality have largely been ignored. His thoughts on the subject, never developed in any formal work, are said to be unsystematic--a judgment reinforced by his shift from Stoicism (intentions are critical) to Utilitarianism (consequences are critical) later in life. Yet his writings and the moral works he recommended reveal much about his moral sense and views on good living. Jefferson valued personal moral improvement, had great respect for moral exemplars and drew inspiration from moralists, sermonizers, novelists, poets, historians and such role models as Professor William Small and his friend George Wythe.

Book excerpt: Leffler argues that American officials did not disregard European developments after World War I but, rather, they sought to settle the war debt and reparations controversies, to stabilize European currencies, and to revive European markets. Leffler bridges the gap between revisionist and traditionalist studies by integrating the diverse aspects of foreign policy and elucidates many new aspects of the foreign policymaking process in the postwar period. Book excerpt: The complex novels by Virginia Woolf are seen with clarity and coherence in "The Elusive Self," a thorough and detailed literary interpretation by Louise A. Poresky. The result is a reliable map that guides the reader through the nine novels. Adding the wisdom of religion and psychology to her literary criticism, Dr. Poresky demonstrates how Woolf's characters strive to achieve personal wholeness. The quest progresses sequentially through the novels as a major character in each work struggles against certain demons, whether the superficial dictates of society or the voices that say women cannot be artists, and thus realizes the difference between ego and essence.

Book excerpt: The work of Miguel de Unamuno y Jugo, one of the most important writers of 20th-century Spain, has recently enjoyed a resurgence of interest within the English-speaking world. In contrast to previous studies of Unamuno's extensive literary corpus, which consider his work primarily from the philosophical points of view, Jurkevich challenges the hagiology which has traditionally dominated Unamuno scholarship with extensive psychoanalytic examination of the writer's life and work.

Book excerpt: How the early Dungeons & Dragons community grappled with the nature of role-playing games, theorizing a new game genre. When Dungeon & Dragons made its debut in the mid-1970s, followed shortly thereafter by other, similar tabletop games, it sparked a renaissance in game design and critical thinking about games. D&D is now popularly considered to be the first role-playing game. But in the original rules, the term "role-playing" is nowhere to be found; D&D was marketed as a war game. In The Elusive Shift, Jon Peterson describes how players and scholars in the D&D community began to apply the term to D&D and similar games--and by doing so, established a new genre of games.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In recent years, federal mandates in education have become the subject of increasing debate. Adam R. Nelson's The Elusive Ideal—a postwar history of federal involvement in the Boston public schools—provides lessons from the past that shed light on the continuing struggles of urban public schools today. This far-reaching analysis examines the persistent failure of educational policy at local, state, and federal levels to equalize educational opportunity for all. Exploring deep-seated tensions between the educational ideals of integration, inclusion, and academic achievement over time, Nelson considers the development and implementation of policies targeted at diverse groups of urban students, including policies related to racial desegregation, bilingual education, special education, school funding, and standardized testing. An ambitious study that spans more than thirty years and covers all facets of educational policy, from legal battles to tax strategies, The Elusive Ideal provides a model from which future inquiries will proceed. A probing and provocative work of urban history with deep relevance for urban public schools today, Nelson's book reveals why equal educational opportunity remains such an elusive ideal.

Book excerpt: Tracing the footsteps of Scottish writer Robert Louis Stevenson, Madison Oliver, an engineer and author of The Elusive Cobra: A Memoir, was seduced by the warm tropical trade winds of the South Pacific Islands. In 1963, after a vacation in Tahiti, Oliver and his wife, Gini, put their possessions in storage to begin a South Pacific adventure that would alter their lives forever. Trouble, however, sometimes comes to paradise. Oliver is diagnosed with cancer and must leave his paradise to have radical neck surgery at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in New York City. The author was diagnosed with his first secondary tumor at the young age of forty-four, in 1970. Three years later, a new-yet very similar-tumor developed on the opposite side of his neck requiring more radical surgery. Following the building of a new image, developing an exercise program that included running two marathons, and completing a successful career, cancer struck again. Mr. Oliver's encounter with recurring cancer, which he likens to the unpredictable attack of a hooded cobra, not only has a message for his fellow cancer survivors, but is inspiring, moving, and the pinnacle of bravery.
