Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Elson Basic Readers: Primer The second aim in this revision was to incorporate new features demanded by experience and the results of recent experiments in reading. Four such features merit Special emphasis: (a) organization of the material to promote sequential habits of thinking; (b) simplicity in content, sentence structure, and vocabulary to insure rapid progress, confidence, and keen interest; (0) balanced variety to cause a steady growth in diversified reading interests; and (d) a practical method, based on the results of scientific studies, to build an early foundation for the various reading attitudes, habits, and skills that are essential in modern life. An additional distinctive feature of the Primer relates to the extreme care exercised in every stage of its construction. In addition to continuous and painstaking effort by the authors, the materials included were subjected to the constant criticism of experts in primary instruction. Furthermore, studies were continually in progress with respect to various problems which were subject to quantitative determination. These are listed in the manual which accompanies the Primer. Book excerpt: This is a reprint of the original Dick and Jane book published in 1930 as one of the Elson-Gray Readers. This book was published by William H. Elson (1856-1935) and William S. Gray (1885-1960). It was a revised version of the series of Elson Readers that were being published by 1909. Before the Elston Readers there were the McGuffy Readers starting in 1881. The McGuffy Readers showed a picture of a cat chasing a rat with the sentence "The Cat and the Rat Ran." These readers were used universally in schools for 40 years. The Elston Readers starting in 1909 had more of a story line and avoided unpleasant but realistic pictures of cats eating rats. It had a short list of repeatable words. This was a series of readers with different stories for different grade levels. Dick and Jane were just two of the characters but they were the ones who seemed to catch on. However, other stories became famous such as "The Little Engine that Could."

Book excerpt: Primer begins this series with the fundamental task of teaching little students to read. The stories are short and to the point, and the text is oversized and spaced widely to make letter recognition a less daunting task. Charming pictures by L. Kate Deal enhance the text by describing the stories visually and help hold the child s interest. Although teaching reading is the foremost purpose of Primer, the stories have been chosen to encourage the development of wholesome attitudes in the young reader. Stories are from renowned children s authors such as L. Alma-Tadema, Carolyn Bailey, Anne Shutze, and others and include classic folk tales and selections from Mother Goose. A Word List can be found at the end of this little volume containing the more difficult words with which the beginning reader may need additional help."

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: They're back! Growing Up with Dick and Jane reunites us with two old friends, Dick and Jane, who, for forty years, taught so many of us to read. Here's the all American brother and sister team. Look! It's Dick, in his striped polo shirts and shorts, always ready for an adventure. Look! Look! It's Jane, in her pretty dresses, eager to have fun and learn about life. There's silly, mischievous Baby Sally, and Spot, America's favorite spaniel. Growing Up with Dick and Jane brings to life the cast of characters who are emblems of the American Dream. And side by side with the story of Dick and Jane is an entertaining and informative text that tracks important historical, social and educational events of the "Dick and Jane era." Here's your chance to step back into the innocent watercolor world of Dick and Jane, where night never comes, knees never scrape, parents never yell and the fun never stops. Remember holding a Dick and Jane primer for the first time and the thrill you felt when you knew you could read? Growing Up with Dick and Jane traces the Dick and Jane phenomenon from their birth during the Depression to their retirement in the stormy 1960s. It explores the influence these little books had on education and the evolving American Dream. Packaged with a sampler of original Dick and Jane stories and cutout dolls of Dick and Jane, Growing Up with Dick and Jane stirs memories of home, school and what it was like to grow up when childhood felt like one long summer day. Carole Kismaric and Marvin Heiferman produce innovative visual books and museum exhibitions. Lookout, their company, has created: Talking Pictures (Chronicle), a book and popular multimedia exhibition; Loyalty and Betrayal: The Story of the American Mob (CollinsSanFrancisco); the bestselling Cinderella and Little Red Riding Hood (Hyperion) with William Wegman; and the cult classics Mr. Salesman (Twin Palms) with Diane Keaton and I'm So Happy (Vintage). Bob Keeshan, known to generations as Captain Kangaroo, is one of the most beloved performers and influential innovators of children's television. The first Clarabell on The Howdy Doody Show, Keeshan went on to create Captain Kangaroo, the longest-running network children's series. An advocate of children's causes, Keeshan's unique blend of education and entertainment has influenced his followers, on screen and off.

Book excerpt: The Elson Readers as you will see use familiar nursery rhymes and stories from Mother Goose that have delighted children for hundreds of years to teach reading to children. This is the book your great-grandmother probably read when she was learning to read. Before the Elston Readers there were the McGuffy Readers starting in 1881. The McGuffy Readers showed a picture of a cat chasing a rat with the sentence "The Cat and the Rat Ran." These readers were used universally in schools for 40 years. Some teachers in private schools are still using them. The Elson Readers by William H. Elson with a different book for each grade level had started by 1909. It was superseded by the Dick and Jane books starting in 1930 as one of the Elson-Gray Readers. This book was published by William H. Elson (1856-1935) the same publisher as the original Elson Readers. Dick and Jame used the "Whole Word" method where a short list of words was used repeatedly over and over again, such as in "Dick said, 'Look look. Look Up. Up, Up, Up'" The most advanced section of "Fun With Dick and Jane" had a story about Dick and Jane's Father stopping at a gas station. Dick and Jane came into disrepute in 1955 with the book Why Johnny Can't Read and What You Can Do About It by Rudolf Flesch. The whole word method was simply not working. Teachers switched to phonics which are in use today. Dick and Jane were sent to an old folks home. Spot was sent to the pound. With Dick and Jane no longer in vogue, why did not teachers go back to the Elson Readers that were used previously? The answer probably is that William H. Elson had died in 1935 and there was no money to be made reprinting the old books. Publishers found new books to publish.
