But it could not be prevented, without violating the promise to which I have alluded, and disappointing the purchaser of the manuscript, who had become exceedingly impatient of any further delay. Distinct from the motives I have assigned, I confess, that I was also in uenced somewhat by the persuasion, per haps a vain one, that the work, comparatively imper fect as it is, might prove not altogether unacceptable to the public, and particularly to the students and practitioners of physio, ln the United States. It will, at least, be useful to my class, as exhibiting more than can elsewhere be met with, of my own specula tive and practical views. Numerous, too, as are the treatises on the materia medica, there is no one which I have seen, precisely on the plan of mine, uniting to some of the more useful pharmaceutical details, co pious practical instructions, adapted to the manage ment of diseases, modified, as they confessedly are, by the peculiarity of the state of society, and climate, of our own country. In Every science, some system is required, and in no one, perhaps, is it more necessary, than in the ma teria medica. Consisting of an immense collection of diversified materials, which are not always obvious. Ly related, it would, Without a perspicuous arrange ment, be greatly defective in practical utility. As the result of much deliberation, and a full comparison of the several plans of classification that have been pro posed, I was induced to prefer the one which I have adopted. But I am now persuaded, that a more na tural, as well as useful arrangement of medicines, might be made, on the principle of their affinities to the several systems of the body, and, should an 0p portunity be afforded me, it is the one which I shall attempt hereafter to establish. It will be perceived, that, instead of noticing in de tail, as is usual with the writers on this department of physio, every individual article, I have dwelt more on the class to which it may be attached, pointing out the mode of operation of the whole congeners, or kindred assortment, and their peculiar relations to dis ease. By thus treating the subject, I cannot help thinking, that much greater order has been attain ed, and no little perplexity and tedious repetitions avoided. Yet I have not omitted to give some ac. Count of each substance separately, to indicate its more important pharmaceutical preparations, and its medicinal virtues, when these may be different from others of the same class, together with its dose, and manner of administration. Again, the several articles were to be distributed into groups subordinate to the class, and every thing peen liar-to each group was to be said in connexion with the group, and not in connexion with each individual article; while only'the peculiarities of each article, when it happened to have any, were to be mentioned under the individual article. Upon this plan all the individual articles were to have been fully treated Of in their respective classes and of course were to have been mentioned only in one single place, viz: immediately fol lowing the proem to the class into which they were reduced. Under this method, nothing but the peculiarities of the article in comparison with other articles of the same group, would have remained to be said under the individual article itself; and in many instances this would have been scarcely any thing. What medicinal peculiarities, in comparison with each other, that can be specifically described, have Sulphate of Potassa, Sulphate of Soda, Sulphate of Magnesia, Tartrate Of Potassa and Soda, etc? Again, what medicinal peculiarities have a large number of the simple bitter Tonics in comparison with each other? Book excerpt: Excerpt from General Therapeutics and Materia Medica, Vol. 1 of 2: Adapted for a Medical Text-Book, With Indexes of Remedies and of Diseases and Their Remedies In all cases, the Author has referred to the position held by the drug as an article of the organized, or of the inorganic kingdom; as well as to general matters of interest relative to the place where it is found, the manner in which it is obtained, and to certain points con nected with its commercial history; but next to therapeutical applica tions he has dwelt more at length on the sensible properties, by which the physician may be enabled to judge of the various articles from his own observation. In another work,1 he has remarked, that it would, doubtless, be well that the physician should know the natural history of the animal whence he obtains his castor, his musk, &c., and that he should be acquainted with the botanical relations of the plants, Whose preparations he prescribes; but such a knowledge is no more indispensable than Greek is to an acquaintance with medical technology. The argument may, indeed, be extended to the consumer of the pro ducts of the animal and vegetable kingdoms as articles of diet. It would be well for him, no doubt, to, be acquainted with the natural history of the ox, the sheep, the hog, &c., whence he derives his sus tenance; yet, notwithstanding his ignorance on this point, universal experience demonstrates, that he has no difficulty in appropriating them to his dietetic necessities. Moreover, there were already valu able works in which all these topics, so interesting to the apothecary especially, are given at such length as almost to exhaust the subject; and of these one of the most remarkable is that of Dr. Pereira, re published in this country under the competent supervision of Dr. Carson, Professor of Materia Medica in the Philadelphia College of Pharmacy.2 Of this the Author largely avails himself in the pre paration of the second edition of the present work. He was like wise greatly indebted to the full and accurate Dispensatory of Drs. Wood and Bache - his learned colleagues in the revision of the Phar macopoeia of the United States to the Dispensatory of Dr. Christison; and - in a minor degree - to the work on Therapeutics and Materia Medica of MM.
