Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Elements of Blowpipe Analysis These few pages are intended to serve a twofold purpose, - to give the student a general outline of Blowpipe Analysis, and to introduce him to the methods of Determinative Mineralogy. Every effort has been made to simplify details so that the book may be used in both High Schools and Colleges. Tables for "systematic" examination have been intentionally omitted, for in the author's estimation these tend to dull the student's power of observation, and to make him place little value upon minute details. The alphabetic arrangement has been followed for the sake of convenience when referring to the book. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Manual of Determinative Mineralogy: With an Introduction on Blow-Pipe Analysis The present work is a complete revision of the "Manual of Determinative Mineralogy and Blowpipe Analysis" by Prof. Geo. J. Brush, which has been very generally used since its first appearance in 1847, as shown by the fact that fourteen editions of it have appeared. In 1896 a revision of introductory chapters devoted to blowpipe analysis and the chemical reactions of the elements was published, and there are now added a chapter on the physical properties of minerals, devoted chiefly to crystallography, and a new set of analytical tables for the identification of minerals. In preparing the introductory chapters, great pains has been taken in the selection of the tests for the elements. Many of the experiments are performed by means of the blowpipe, but chemical tests in the wet way are recommended when it is believed that they are more decisive. All the tests have been carefully verified, and many of them have been devised especially for the present work. To make the book more convenient for reference, conspicuous headlines and catch-words have been freely used. The tests for the rare elements, and those for the common ones which are only occasionally employed, are printed in small type. It is hoped that the plan adopted of giving full directions concerning the methods of manipulation and the quantities of materials to be taken in making many of the tests will be found useful. It must be borne in mind constantly that accuracy is of the utmost importance in determinative mineralogy, and it is believed that no methods are so generally to be relied upon for giving decisive results as those based upon the identification of the chemical constituents of the minerals. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Plattner's Manual of Qualitative and Quantitative Analysis With the Blowpipe Wm, at the publisher's request, after the third edition of Fumnn's blowpipe Ainnrsrs was exhausted, I undertook the revision of the present edition, it was in the belief that now, as formerly, many would desire to have at hand a complete manual upon so useful a subject. As far as possible I have confined myself to the previous labors Of my instructor, whom I can never forget, and have only added such new and approved matter as had been made known since the appearance of the third edition, because I have had ample Opportunity, during several years in which I have labored as a teacher of this branch of analysis in our Mining Academy, to convince myself of the suitable way in which the subject is classified and treated in his work. May this fourth edition find as friendly a reception as has been extended to its predecessors. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Descriptive Mineralogy The following pages are presented with the purpose of affording students a comprehensive view of modern mineralogy rather than a detailed knowledge of many minerals. The minerals selected for description are not necessarily those that are most common nor those that occur in greatest quantity. The list includes those that are of scientific interest or of economic importance, and, in addition, those that illustrate some principle employed in the classification of minerals. The volume is not a reference book. It is offered solely as a textbook. It does not pretend to furnish a complete discussion of the mineral kingdom, nor a means of determining the nature of any mineral that may be met with. The chapters devoted to the processes of determinative mineralogy are brief, and the familiar "key to the determination of species" is omitted. In place of the latter is a simple guide to the descriptions of minerals to be found in the body of the text. For more complete determinative tables the reader is referred to one of the many good books that are devoted entirely to this phase of the subject. In the descriptions of the characteristic crystals of minerals both the Naumann and the Miller systems of notation are employed, the former because of its almost general use in the more important reference books and the latter because of its almost universal use in modern crystallographic investigations. The student must be familiar with both notations. It is thought that this familiarity can be best acquired by employing the two notations side by side. In preparing the descriptive matter the author has made extensive use of Hintze's Handbuch der Mineralogie. The figures illustrating crystal forms are taken from many sources. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Plattner's Manual of Qualitative and Quantitative Analysis With the Blowpipe: From the Last German Edition, Revised and Enlarged The present Work is a translation of plattner's book, in Which nothing of the slightest importance has been omitted, While its size has been reduced as much as possible by avoiding unnecessary repetitions and by using concise language. Several new qualitative tests, a quantitative assay for mercury, descriptions of new appa ratus for measuring silver assay buttons, a complete general index, and other matters of minor importance, have been added. In the formulas of the silicates Si 02 has been substituted for Si and upward of one hundred and fifty new minerals have been intro duced. For most of these the translator is indebted to Dana's Mineralogy, Which has also rendered invaluable service in translat ing the names of the minerals. In order to secure uniformity. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Use of the Blowpipe in Chemical Analysis, and in the Examination of Minerals Closely connected with his canon; thus we find him expressing the cornposition of magnetic iron ore (traite, p. 145) as that of one atom of oxi-s dule (protoxide) of iron, with M atoms of oxide (peroxide), the former containing two atoms of oxygen, the latter three; and, adopting Latin names and terminations, he calls the protoxide of Iron, omi dam ferrosum, the peroxide oridum ferricmn, and the compound we are speaking of, oxidant ferroso ferricum. This, and similar terms, I have taken the liberty toreject, using instead those commonly adopt ed in this country. The chemical and mineralogical symbols are composed of the initial letter or letters of the Latin names of the various elementary boa dies; for'the former, the common Roman capitals are used, over which are placed as many data as 'there are supposed to be atoms or Oxygen com bined with the electro-positive element; for the mineralogical symbols Italic capitals areem ployed, and the dots omitted. In 'the formulae they are connected by the usual algebraic sign of addition. These formulae I have omitted in toto; but that the reader may not lose the information they are intended to convey, -l have subjoined, in notes. It provides both an important database for professionals as well as detailed reading ranging from historical facts, discoverers' portraits, colour plates of mineral types, natural occurrences, and industrial figures to winning and refining processes, biological roles and applications in modern chemistry, engineering and industry. Elemental data is presented in fact tables which include numerous physical and thermodynamic properties, isotope lists, radiation absorption characteristics, NMR parameters, and others. Further pertinent data is supplied in additional tables throughout the text. Published in Swedish in three volumes from 1998 to 2000, the contents have been revised and expanded by the author for this English edition.
