Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Elements of Animal Biology This volume is intended as an introduction to the elements of animal biology for the use of students in the high school. The cut-and-dried method of exposition which is so commonly found in text - books and which so frequently deprives them of all traces of stimulating quality has been avoided so far as was deemed compatible with the presentation of such subject matter as a text-book should contain. Although the book would best fulfil its purpose if read in connection with laboratory work, I have not included directions for such work, partly be cause it would add considerably to the bulk of the volume, but chiefly because so many teachers nowadays prefer to make laboratory outlines of their own. The order in which the main topics are treated is essen tially like that which is followed in several of the best recent text-books. The general experience of teachers of biology has shown it to be eminently desirable that the student should possess a general knowledge of the animal kingdom as a preparation for the study of physiology. The section on the elements of physiology has therefore been placed after the part devoted to a survey of the principal groups of animals. Rather more than the usual amount of attention is given to the role of bacteria in causing disease, and to the way in which diseases are spread and how they may be avoided. The epidermis of the skin is composed of cells of the same general kind grouped together; it is therefore a tissue. Muscle and bone are tissues, as are also tendons, many glands, and the components of the nervous system. Cytology, contrariwise, is concerned with the minute components of cells, the parts of the nucleus, the minute structure of the living matter, the nature of cell organs, and the like. Embryology has to do with the young or developmental stages of animals. When it is purely descriptive, dealing only with the structures of these young stages, not with the processes going on in them, it is morphological in its nature. In creating subdivisions of zoology, the several morphological branches mentioned in the preceding paragraphs have occasionally been elevated to equal rank with the divisions described below; but Since they do not differ in principle, all being concerned with structure, it seems better to combine all of them under the Single head, morphology. Morphology is historically the oldest of the divisions of zoology, Since in early times practically all that was known of animals was their structure. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Elements of Biology, With Special Reference to Their Role in the Lives of Animals IT IS the conviction of the writer that the specific objectives of a gen eral course in Biology for students in colleges of Liberal Arts are three: To impart such principles and concepts as will enable the student to appreciate the unity In Nature and the place of living organisms, including Man, in that unity; to instill an understanding of the major laws that govern living organisms and a recognition of the operation of these laws in determining broad social and eco nomic controls in human society; to impart useful information and information of such character that a habit of observing caution in the face of all forms of scientific and intellectual quackery will be developed. A fourth objective that is self-evident and which General Biology holds in common with many other academic disciplines is the development of student power of clear and logical reasoning based upon accurate observation and established facts. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Laboratory Directions in Principles of Animal Biology The course for which this book of laboratory directions was prepared is a recognition of the growth which the science of Zoology has made in the past several decades. No longer a purely morphological subject, zoology is not in the opinion of the authors properly treated in a purely morphological course. Good teachers have long recognized that dis section and classification alone would not make a zoologist, and have striven in lectures and recitations to provide the larger outlook which the science has come to possess. But this recognition seems hardly adequate. If in the lectures and recitations due attention is paid to the type dis sections in the laboratory, morphology can scarcely avoid receiving an emphasis it does not deserve. If to avoid this over-emphasis the recita tions and lectures are devoted exclusively to evolution, distribution, ecology, genetics, etc., the laboratory exercises and recitations must seem unrelated to one another. Recitations and laboratory work thus become two courses Which the student pursues simultaneously. The only solution has appeared to be to make the laboratory work itself bear on the large questions of biology. The laboratory work may thus have a balance of its own, it does not need to be averaged with the recitations. This book contains directions for first-hand exercises which we believe have the emphasis properly placed. Morphology still receives more attention than any other division of the subject, but it is nearly everywhere directed to some end Which is not merely structure. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Foundations of Biology The present volume is published in response to a demand for a special adaptation Of the author's Foundations of Biology, Fourth Edition, designed especially for use in courses in animal biology and general zoology in which plants are considered only inci dentally in their relations with animals. The essential plan as well as much of the material is, with purpose, the same in both books since the author is apparently far from alone in the convio tion that the general biological viewpoint affords the natural ap proach to an introductory survey of either animal or plant science. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Elements of Zoology We know that a bird eats, moves, and breathes, and that its blood circulates; but plants also eat, respire through their leaves, have a circulation of sap, and some are endowed with locomotive powers. When we descend to the lower forms of animal and vegetable life, the points of similarity become almost identical; the swift-mov ing diatom so resembling some of the lowest animal forms that it is well-nigh impossible to distinguish be tween them. The plants, however, have no nervous sys tem, no special organs Of circulation or digestion that characterize the majority of animal forms, so that an ani mal differs mainly from a plant in possessing, as a rule, a nervous system and special organs of Circulation and digestion. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Biology of the Frog The present book is the outgrowth of a course of lectures delivered during the past six years at the Uni versity of Michigan. This course with the accompanying laboratory work was based on the frog, which was chosen as a convenient form with which to introduce students to a knowledge of the morphology, physiology, and life his tory of vertebrate animals. In writing this book I have had in mind the needs of students, such as most of those taking this course, who have had some preliminary work in general biology, but who have forgotten most of what little of the elements of physiology they may have learned in the schools. A certain amount of physiology of a more or less general nature has accordingly been introduced in addition to the descriptions of the special functions of the various organs of the body. The book is more suitable for use as a text in college or university classes than in high schools, although it is hoped that it will prove of service to teachers in high schools where the frog is studied in the course in zoology.
