Download or read book Measurements of Atmospheric Electric Conductivity and Field in the Shenandoah National Park, Virginia written by R. V. Anderson and published by . This book was released on 1963 with total page 102 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A program for the measurement of atmospheric electric conductivity and field was established by the U.S. Naval Research Laboratory in 1954 in the Big Meadows area of the Shenandoah National Park, Virginia. The purpose of the program was to determine relative magnitudes and time dependence of the atmospheric electric variables. The instrumentation was composed of electric field meters, conductivity chambers, accompanying amplifiers and timers, and peripheral equipment necessary to produce continuous recordings of the electric field and conductivity of the atmosphere. Data from November 23, 1954, to October 21, 1956, are presented in tabulated and graphic form. The data include daily, monthly, and seasonal hourly averages of total atmospheric electric conductivity, ratio of the two polar conductivities, electric field, and computed conduction current density. Book Synopsis Advanced Air Pollution by : Farhad Nejadkoorki
Download or read book Advanced Air Pollution written by Farhad Nejadkoorki and published by BoD – Books on Demand. This book was released on 2011-08-17 with total page 598 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Leading air quality professionals describe different aspects of air pollution. The book presents information on four broad areas of interest in the air pollution field; the air pollution monitoring; air quality modeling; the GIS techniques to manage air quality; the new approaches to manage air quality. This book fulfills the need on the latest concepts of air pollution science and provides comprehensive information on all relevant components relating to air pollution issues in urban areas and industries. The book is suitable for a variety of scientists who wish to follow application of the theory in practice in air pollution. Known for its broad case studies, the book emphasizes an insightful of the connection between sources and control of air pollution, rather than being a simple manual on the subject.

Book excerpt: and less as the emanation unden\'ent radioactive decay, and it became motion less after about 30 seconds. Since this process was occurring very rapidly, Hahn and Sackur marked the position of the pointer on a scale with pencil marks. As a timing device they used a metronome that beat out intervals of approximately 1. 3 seconds. This simple method enabled them to determine that the half-life of the emanations of actinium and emanium were the same. Although Giesel's measurements had been more precise than Debierne's, the name of actinium was retained since Debierne had made the discovery first. Hahn now returned to his sample of barium chloride. He soon conjectured that the radium-enriched preparations must harbor another radioactive sub stance. The liquids resulting from fractional crystallization, which were sup posed to contain radium only, produced two kinds of emanation. One was the long-lived emanation of radium, the other had a short life similar to the emanation produced by thorium. Hahn tried to separate this substance by adding some iron to the solutions that should have been free of radium, but to no avail. Later the reason for his failure became apparent. The element that emitted the thorium emanation was constantly replenished by the ele ment believed to be radium. Hahn succeeded in enriching a preparation until it was more than 100,000 times as intensive in its radiation as the same quantity of thorium.

Book Synopsis Geophysics, Realism, and Industry by : Aitor Anduaga
Download or read book Geophysics, Realism, and Industry written by Aitor Anduaga and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2015-12-17 with total page 275 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Did industry and commerce affect the concepts, values and epistemic foundations of different sciences? If so, how and to what extent? This book suggests that the most significant influence of industry on science in the two case studies treated here had to do with the issue of realism. Using wave propagation as the common thread, this is the first book to simultaneously analyse the emergence of realist attitudes towards the entities of the ionosphere and of the earth's crust. However, what led physicists and engineers to adopt realist attitudes? This book suggests that a new kind of realism --a realism of social and cultural origins- is the answer: a preliminary, entity realism responding to specific commercial and engineering interests, and a realism that was neither strictly instrumental nor exclusively operational. The book has two parts: while Part I focuses on the study of the ionosphere and how the British radio industry affected ionospheric physics, Part II focuses on the study of the Earth's crust and how the American oil industry affected crustal seismology.
