Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Ahl-e-Hadith movement of the Indian subcontinent is known for its specialisation in the science of Hadith, through teaching, publishing and explaining books of Hadith. What is not widely known is the great service the Ahl-e-Hadith offered in teaching and writing about the Quran and its sciences. In this book, the author describes hundreds of works produced by 320 scholars and publishers. This information is based mainly on Bare Sagheer Ahl-e-Hadith Khuddam-e Quran (696 pages, Urdu) of Shaykh Muhammad Ishaq Bhatti and also some benefits have been added from Bare Sagheer Pak wa Hind mein Ulama Ahl-e-Hadith ki Tafsir-e Khidmat (64 pages, Urdu) of Shaykh AbdurRasheed Iraqee and Juhud Ahl-e-Hadith fi Khidmah Al-Quran Al-Karim (78 pages, Arabic) of Shaykh AbdurRahman Feraway among other sources. It is hoped that this book will inspire the youth, especially those in the West originally from the Indian subcontinent who are not aware of the efforts of their elders, to carry on the mission of propagating the Book and the Sunnah.

Book excerpt: It is extremely regrettable that some people calling themselves Ahlus Sunnah wal Jama'ah are, in some of their research, trying to degrade the Companions and, by mentioning their disputes and conflicts, they want to reduce their importance. Indeed they are trying continuously and actively to portray the efforts of the Companions as not solely for the sake of Islam but they claim that their efforts were based on personal benefit or liking and they were fighting like people desirous of the throne and kingship (may Allah protect us from such beliefs!)In contrast to this, all of Ahlus Sunnah are in agreement on the fact that the decision on the internal matters and disputes between the Companions is not a matter of history but a matter of creed, and despite these conflicts they are honourable, truthful and a people who desired guidance for the community. This is the position of all the pious predecessors. The scholars who authored books on creed gave in them a great emphasis on this and we will have the pleasure to present their detailed statements to the readers of this book.Excerpt from the Author's Introduction

Book excerpt: In today’s complex and volatile world the consequences of relying on fraudulent and counterfeit Hadith to legitimize extremist behavior, issue violent fatwas, and justify blatant abuse, particularly of women, is not only far too easy but in fact dangerous. Israr Khan addresses the sensitive topic of Hadith authentication, focusing on the criteria adopted by classical scholars to maintain that concentration on the continuity and accuracy of the chain of narrators, rather than the textual content of Hadith, has led to particular Hadith being included which either contradict other Hadith directly, project the Prophet (SAAS) in an uncharacteristic light, or do not reflect and/or conflict with the teachings of the Qur’an. The study traces in careful detail the historical development of the oral and written traditions, as well as the many targeted attempts at fabrication that took place, critiquing in methodical detail certain Hadith which have come to be widely accepted as “authentic.” The prominent collections we have today, were made possible by the development of the science of Hadith criticism, and Muslim scholars deserve deep appreciation for their painstaking work, as well as their invaluable contribution towards preserving the Hadith literature to the best of their ability. However, insists the author, the process is ongoing, and the closed door policy which currently surrounds Hadith authentication needs to be carefully reexamined.

Using new insights, it explores South Asia’s regional dynamics of antagonism, the ever-present challenge to the frontiers of India, Pakistan and the terrorism question, the strife in Afghanistan and the self-serving selective US ‘war on terror’. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Articles collected in Historicizing Sunni Islam in the Ottoman Empire, c. 1450-c. 1750 engage with the idea that “Sunnism” itself has a history and trace how particular Islamic genres—ranging from prayer manuals, heresiographies, creeds, hadith and fatwa collections, legal and theological treatises, and historiography to mosques and Sufi convents—developed and were reinterpreted in the Ottoman Empire between c. 1450 and c. 1750. The volume epitomizes the growing scholarly interest in historicizing Islamic discourses and practices of the post-classical era, which has heretofore been styled as a period of decline, reflecting critically on the concepts of ‘tradition’, ‘orthodoxy’ and ‘orthopraxy’ as they were conceived and debated in the context of building and maintaining the longest-lasting Muslim-ruled empire. Book excerpt: This volume critically analyses Muslim Personal Law (MPL) in India and offers an alternative perspective to look at MPL and the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) debate. Tracing the historical origins of this legal mechanism and its subsequent political manifestations, it highlights the complex nature of MPL as a sociological phenomenon, driven by context-specific social norms and cultural values. With expert contributions, it discusses wide-ranging themes and issues including MPL reforms and human rights; decoding of UCC in India; the contentious Triple Talaq bill and MPL; the Shah Bano case; Sharia (Islamic jurisprudence) in postcolonial India; women’s equality and family laws; and MPL in the media discourse in India. The volume highlights that although MPL is inextricably linked to Sharia, it does not necessarily determine the everyday customs and local practices of Muslim communities in India This topical book will greatly interest scholars and researchers of law and jurisprudence, political studies, Islamic studies, Muslim Personal Law, history, multiculturalism, South Asian studies, sociology of religion, sociology of law and family law. It will also be useful to practitioners, policymakers, law professionals and journalists.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Comparative Religious Law provides for the first time a study of the regulatory instruments of Jewish, Christian and Muslim religious organisations in Britain in light of their historical religious laws. Norman Doe questions assumptions about the pervasiveness, character and scope of religious laws, from the view that they are not or should not be recognised by civil law, to the idea that there may be a fundamental incompatibility between religious and civil law. It proposes that religious laws pervade society, are recognised by civil law, have both a religious and temporal character, and regulate wide areas of believers' lives. Subjects include sources of law, faith leaders, governance, worship and education, rites of passage, divorce and children, and religion-State relations. A Charter of 'the principles of religious law' common to all three Abrahamic faiths is proposed, to stimulate greater mutual understanding between religion and society and between the three faiths themselves.

Book excerpt: Shaykh SafiuRahman Mubarakpuri is a well known scholar around the world due to his popular book Ar-Raheeq Al-Makhtum (The Sealed Nectar; indeed this book won the first prize in a competition organised by the Muslim World League (Rabitah Alam Islami) for the best Seerah book). The present book, The "Islamic" Revolution of Khomeini, its Psychological Environment and Realities by Shaykh SafiuRahman Mubarakpuri is acompilation of a series of his articles written in Urdu in the magazine "Mohadis". These articles written during the Iran-Iraq war exposed the creed of Ayatollah Khomeini and his expansionist agenda and plans to invade Sunni countries such as Iraq and Saudi Arabia. Forty years later, we see that Iraq is now a satellite country of Iran and under its control; Iran has committed atrocious crimes and killings of Sunnis in Yemen and Syria, implementing the agenda of Khomeini. In these articles, the author exposes the creed of the Shi'ites, their belief in the alteration of the Quran, their excommunication of the Companions, their hatred towards the Sunnis and other horrendous beliefs from their main sources. The Shaykh also exposes the creed of Ayatollah Khomeini and clarified that his beliefs echo the views of extreme Shi'ites and he is working on a clear strategy to take over Iraq and the Hijaz in preparation for the arrival of their presumed hidden Imam from the cave. Unfortunately many naive Sunni Muslims view Khomeini and Iran as Islamic symbols and we hope that this book will expose the reality of the Shi'ite school of thought so Sunnis remain alert and vigilant about them. Also we hope that Shi'ite laymen will, by reading this book, open their eyes to their illogical school of thought, which affirms divine powers to the "Twelve Imams", and we pray to Allah that these sincere Shi'ite laymen convert to Sunnism and orthodox Islam. Ameen!

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book examines the growing tension between social movements that embrace egalitarian and inclusivist views of national and global politics, most notably classical liberalism, and those that advance social hierarchy and national exclusivism, such as neoliberalism, neoconservatism, and national populism. In exploring issues relating to tensions and conflicts around globalization, the book identifies historical patterns of convergence and divergence rooted in the monotheistic traditions, beginning with the ancient Israelites that dominated the Near East during the Axial age, through Islamic civilization, and finally by considering the idealism-realism tensions in modern times. One thing remained constant throughout the various historical stages that preceded our current moment of global convergence: a recurring tension between transcendental idealism and various forms of realism. Transcendental idealism, which prioritize egalitarian and universal values, pushed periodically against the forces of realism that privilege established law and power structure. Equipped with the idealism-realism framework, the book examines the consequences of European realism that justified the imperialistic venture into Africa, the Middle East, and Latin America in the name of liberation and liberalization. The ill-conceived strategy has, ironically, engendered the very dysfunctional societies that produce the waves of immigrants in constant motion from the South to the North, simultaneously as it fostered the social hierarchy that transfer external tensions into identity politics within the countries of the North. The book focuses particularly on the role played historically by Islamic rationalism in translating the monotheistic egalitarian outlook into the institutions of religious pluralism, legislative and legal autonomy, and scientific enterprise at the foundation of modern society. It concludes by shedding light on the significance of the Muslim presence in Western cultures as humanity draws slowly but consistently towards what we may come to recognize as the Global Age.
