Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A comprehensive, modern account of the flow of inviscid incompressible fluids This one-stop resource for students, instructors, and professionals goes beyond analytical solutions for irrotational fluids to provide practical answers to real-world problems involving complex boundaries. It offers extensive coverage of vorticity transport as well as computational methods for inviscid flows, and it provides a solid foundation for further studies in fluid dynamics. Inviscid Incompressible Flow supplies a rigorous introduction to the continuum mechanics of fluid flows. It derives vector representation theorems, develops the vorticity transport theorem and related integral invariants, and presents theorems associated with the pressure field. This self-contained sourcebook describes both solution methods unique to two-dimensional flows and methods for axisymmetric and three-dimensional flows, many of which can be applied to two-dimensional flows as a special case. Finally, it examines perturbations of equilibrium solutions and ensuing stability issues. Important features of this powerful, timely volume include: * Focused, comprehensive coverage of inviscid incompressible fluids * Four entire chapters devoted to vorticity transport and solution of vortical flows * Theorems and computational methods for two-dimensional, axisymmetric, and three-dimensional flows * A companion Web site containing subroutines for calculations in the book * Clear, easy-to-follow presentation Inviscid Incompressible Flow, the only all-in-one presentation available on this topic, is a first-rate teaching and learning tool for graduate- and senior undergraduate-level courses in inviscid fluid dynamics. It is also an excellent reference for professionals and researchers in engineering, physics, and applied mathematics.

Hirsch, Vrije Universiteit Brussel, Brussels, Belgium This is the first of two volumes which together describe comprehensively the theory and practice of the numerical computation of internal and external flows. In this volume, the author explains the use of basic computational methods to solve problems in fluid dynamics, comparing these methods so that the reader can see which would be the most appropriate to use for a particular problem. The book is divided into four parts. In the first part, mathematical models are introduced. In the second part, the various numerical methods are described, while in the third and fourth parts the workings of these methods are investigated in some detail. Volume 2 will be concerned with the applications of numerical methods to flow problems, and together the two volumes will provide an excellent reference for practitioners and researchers working in computational fluid mechanics and dynamics.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is devoted to the numerical analysis of compressible fluids in the spirit of the celebrated Lax equivalence theorem. The text is aimed at graduate students in mathematics and fluid dynamics, researchers in applied mathematics, numerical analysis and scientific computing, and engineers and physicists. The book contains original theoretical material based on a new approach to generalized solutions (dissipative or measure-valued solutions). The concept of a weak-strong uniqueness principle in the class of generalized solutions is used to prove the convergence of various numerical methods. The problem of oscillatory solutions is solved by an original adaptation of the method of K-convergence. An effective method of computing the Young measures is presented. Theoretical results are illustrated by a series of numerical experiments. Applications of these concepts are to be expected in other problems of fluid mechanics and related fields.

This book was released on 2003 with total page 560 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is concerned with mathematical and numerical methods for compressible flow. It aims to provide the reader with a sufficiently detailed and extensive, mathematically precise, but comprehensible guide, through a wide spectrum of mathematical and computational methods used in Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) for the numerical simulation of compressible flow. Up-to-date techniques applied in the numerical solution of inviscid as well as viscous compressible flow on unstructured meshes are explained, thus allowing the simulation of complex three-dimensional technically relevant problems. Among some of the methods addressed are finite volume methods using approximate Riemann solvers, finite element techniques, such as the streamline diffusion and the discontinuous Galerkin methods, and combined finite volume - finite element schemes. The book gives a complex insight into the numerics of compressible flow, covering the development of numerical schemes and their theoretical mathematical analysis, their verification on test problems and use in solving practical engineering problems. The book will be helpful to specialists coming into contact with CFD - pure and applied mathematicians, aerodynamists, engineers, physicists and natural scientists. It will also be suitable for advanced undergraduate, graduate and postgraduate students of mathematics and technical sciences.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "A numerical solution method is developed for the solution of two-dimensional, irrotational and compressible fluid flow problems. The partial differential equation, in terms of the velocity potential, describing the flow is replaced by finite difference equations and the resulting matrix is solved by Gaussian elimination. The method is successfully applied to two subsonic flow problems: a 7.5° wedge and a 6° wedge inlet. The method becomes invalid, as expected, with the appearance of sonic velocity in the flow field. An investigation of the definition of the singularities is made. This indicates that the best agreement with the experimental results for the same problem is obtained when the flow directions at the singularities are assumed to be equal to that of the wedge. Methods are postulated to remove the restraints associated with a limited field size by replacing the boundary values, after the initial solution, with values extrapolated from the flow field"--Abstract, leaf ii.

Book excerpt: This reference develops the fundamental concepts of compressible fluid flow by clearly illustrating their applications in real-world practice through the use of numerous worked-out examples and problems. The book covers concepts of thermodynamics and fluid mechanics which relate directly to compressible flow; discusses isentropic flow through a variable-area duct; describes normal shock waves, including moving shock waves and shock-tube analysis; explores the effects of friction and heat interaction on the flow of a compressible fluid; covers two-dimensional shock and expansion waves; provides a treatment of linearized flow; discusses unsteady wave propagation and computational methods in fluid dynamics; provides several numerical methods for solving linear and nonlinear equations encountered in compressible flow; offers modern computational methods for solving nonintegrable equations; and describes methods of measurement in high-speed flow. Suitable for the practicing engineer engaged in compressible-flow applications.
