Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Efficacy of the Gospel Considered With Reference to Roman Catholic Emancipation: A Sermon Preached in the South Church, Dundee, on Sabbath Afternoon, April 12, 1829 The request of friends is not infrequently pleaded in excuse for submitting insular Discourses upon particular occasions to the observation of the public. Had I been solicited, however, by no other inducement, I may remark, that I never would have yielded to the publication of this hasty production. To this necessity I am impelled by a desire to counteract that misrepresentation with which I have been pretty generally assailed, by those who are hostile to the opinions contained in the following pages. I have no wish whatever to escape from the charges which have been brought against me, either for my entertaining these opinions, or for my declaration of them: But I would not willingly suffer under the imputation of sentiments which I never cherished, and consequently never would have expressed. The Roman Catholic relief bill, pending in the House of Lords about the date when this Sermon was preached, has now been passed into a law, under the auspices and with the concurrence of the most enlightened men of these times; and it is not to be supposed that I can in the least be affected by the reproach which has been discountenanced by such high authority. I am aware of the cavils to which I expose myself by laying this Sermon before the public. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "English Historical Documents is the most comprehensive, annotated collection of documents on British (not in reality just English) history ever compiled. Conceived during the Second World War with a view to ensuring the most important historical documents remained available and accessible in perpetuity, the first volume came out in 1953, and the most recent volume almost sixty years later. The print series, edited by David C. Douglas, is a magisterial survey of British history, covering the years 500 to 1914 and including around 5,500 primary sources, all selected by leading historians Editors. It has over the years become an indispensable resource for generations of students, researchers and lecturers. EHD is now available in its entirety online. Bringing EHD into the digital age has been a long and complex process. To provide you with first-rate, intelligent searchability, Routledge have teamed up with the Institute of Historical Research (one of the research institutes that make up the School of Advanced Study, University of London http://www.history.ac.uk) to produce EHD Online. The IHR's team of experts have fully indexed the documents, using an exhaustive historical thesaurus developed by the Royal Historical Society for its Bibliography of British and Irish History. The sources include treaties, statutes, declarations, government and cabinet proceedings, military dispatches, orders, acts, sermons, newspaper articles, pamphlets, personal and official letters, diaries and more. Each section of documents and many of the documents themselves are accompanied by editorial commentary. The sources cover a wide spectrum of topics, from political and constitutional issues to social, economic, religious as well as cultural history."--[Résumé de l'éditeur].

Book Synopsis A History of Christianity in Asia, Vol. II by : Samuel Hugh Moffett
Download or read book A History of Christianity in Asia, Vol. II written by Samuel Hugh Moffett and published by Orbis Books. This book was released on 2014-07-30 with total page 702 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The story of Christianity in the West has often been told, but the history of Christianity in the East is not as well known. The seed was the same: the good news of Jesus Christ for the whole world, which Christians call "the gospel." But it was sown by different sowers; it was planted in different soil; it grew with a different flavor; and it was gathered by different reapers. It is too often forgotten that the faith moved east across Asia as early as it moved west into Europe. Western church history tends to follow Paul to Philippi and to Rome and on across Europe to the conversion of Constantine and the barbarians. With some outstanding exceptions, only intermittently has the West looked beyond Constantinople as its center. It was a Christianity that has for centuries remained unashamedly Asian. A History of Christianity in Asia makes available immense amounts of research on religious pluralism of Asia and how Christianity spread long before the modern missionary movement went forth in the shelter of Western military might. Invaluable for historians of Asia and scholars of mission, it is stimulating for all readers interested in Christian history. --
