Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The number of students from diverse cultures is increasing in our school systems. Educators need to recognize this change and include diversity in their everyday teaching (Iwai, 2015). Children need to see themselves in the literature that they read to promote self-worth, in addition to being exposed to other cultures in order to heighten their awareness of diversity. Multicultural literature promotes the acceptance of others, empathy, and the understanding of prejudice, bias, and tolerance. When students are exposed to multicultural literature I the classroom they not only have an increased understanding of their own culture, but a deeper acceptance of other cultures. Teachers need to provide students with a rich environment that gives students opportunities to read, hear, and discuss multicultural literature. This project discusses the effect of multicultural literature on students as well as the need for teachers to bring quality multicultural literature into the classroom. The need for multicultural literature in the classroom is laid out. A professional development workshop for teachers was constructed to help professionals incorporate multicultural literature in their classrooms. The key features of the workshop include: discussion of the importance of multicultural literature, finding high quality multicultural literature and how to provide opportunities for students with multicultural literature in the classroom.

Book excerpt: With the growing number of ethnic minority students in public schools, it is very important for teachers, librarians, and all those who work with children to have an understanding of appropriate multicultural literature. This book and the literature selections are designed to develop heightened sensitivity and understanding of people from various cultures and traditions through the selection of carefully chosen literature. It includes a balance of research about the culture and the literature, a discussion of authentic literature for students from early childhood through young adults, and teaching activities designed to develop higher cognitive abilities. The book uses a unique five-phase approach for the study of multicultural literature that has been field tested.

Book excerpt: "The purpose of this 6-week action research study was to investigate whether multicultural literature is an effective tool in developing first-grade students' cultural and racial competence. The research questions included: 1) How would students respond to multicultural literature? 2) Would those student responses to literature be sufficient in measuring changes in their racial and cultural competency? And, 3) Which aspects of the multicultural education program would the students find most interesting and resonating? Lessons were designed around multicultural children's literature and were implemented over the course of six weeks in a first-grade classroom. Both qualitative and quantitative data was collected through pre- and post-surveys, pre- and post- rubrics, and researcher field notes. Results indicated that students' awareness of cultural and racial differences and similarities increased during the multicultural program, but also that some children demonstrated a degree of cultural bias."--Abstract, p. 1.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The elementary classroom today in the United States is much more diverse than in previous years. The diverse dynamics of the society are continuing to increase and are evident in the student population. It is imperative that students learn acceptance and understanding of different races, ethnicities, and cultures. Knowledge of the diverse world around the students leads to communication, understanding and acceptance of differences, and assists in finding ones identity. Multicultural literature can be used to begin an acceptance and understanding of different races, ethnicities, and cultures. For children from mainstream culture, multicultural books assist in teaching acceptance and understanding which leads to cultural sensitivity. For children who are culturally diverse, the use of multicultural books assists in building a positive self-concept and a feeling of comfort and acceptance in the classroom environment. Multicultural literature can be used across the curriculum if so desired by the educator.

Book excerpt: As multicultural education is becoming integral to the core curriculum, teachers often implement this aspect into their courses through literature. However, standards and criteria to teach and promote active discussion about this literature are sparse. Cultural Journeys introduces pre-service and experienced teachers to the use of literature to promote active discussions that lead students to think about racial diversity. More than just an annotated list of books for children, Pamela S. Gates and Dianne L. Hall Mark provide systematic guidelines that teachers can use throughout their careers to evaluate multicultural literature for students in grades K-8. At the same time, the text leads the reader to a deeper understanding of how to use multicultural literature throughout the entire curriculum and not just during specially designated months or time periods. With the example unit plans and extensive annotated bibliography, this book is a valuable resource that pre-service teachers will utilize when they begin teaching and in-service teachers will reference repeatedly during their planning periods.

It "unpackages" the various dimensions of literacy--linguistic, cognitive, sociocultural, and developmental--and at the same time accounts for the interrelationships among them. The goal is to provide a conceptual foundation upon which literacy curriculum and instruction in school settings can be grounded.

It’s hard being the new kid in school, especially when you’re from another country and don’t know the language. Then, on a field trip to an apple orchard, Farah discovers there are lots of things that sound the same as they did at home, from dogs crunching their food to the ripple of friendly laughter. As she helps the class make apple cider, Farah connects with the other students and begins to feel that she belongs. Ted Lewin’s gorgeous sun-drenched paintings and Eve Bunting’s sensitive text immediately put the reader into another child’s shoes in this timely story of a young Muslim immigrant.

Book excerpt: The concept of "funds of knowledge" is based on a simple premise: people are competent and have knowledge, and their life experiences have given them that knowledge. The claim in this book is that first-hand research experiences with families allow one to document this competence and knowledge, and that such engagement provides many possibilities for positive pedagogical actions. Drawing from both Vygotskian and neo-sociocultural perspectives in designing a methodology that views the everyday practices of language and action as constructing knowledge, the funds of knowledge approach facilitates a systematic and powerful way to represent communities in terms of the resources they possess and how to harness them for classroom teaching. This book accomplishes three objectives: It gives readers the basic methodology and techniques followed in the contributors' funds of knowledge research; it extends the boundaries of what these researchers have done; and it explores the applications to classroom practice that can result from teachers knowing the communities in which they work. In a time when national educational discourses focus on system reform and wholesale replicability across school sites, this book offers a counter-perspective stating that instruction must be linked to students' lives, and that details of effective pedagogy should be linked to local histories and community contexts. This approach should not be confused with parent participation programs, although that is often a fortuitous consequence of the work described. It is also not an attempt to teach parents "how to do school" although that could certainly be an outcome if the parents so desired. Instead, the funds of knowledge approach attempts to accomplish something that may be even more challenging: to alter the perceptions of working-class or poor communities by viewing their households primarily in terms of their strengths and resources, their defining pedagogical characteristics. Funds of Knowledge: Theorizing Practices in Households, Communities, and Classrooms is a critically important volume for all teachers and teachers-to-be, and for researchers and graduate students of language, culture, and education.
