When students are exposed to multicultural literature I the classroom they not only have an increased understanding of their own culture, but a deeper acceptance of other cultures. Teachers need to provide students with a rich environment that gives students opportunities to read, hear, and discuss multicultural literature. This project discusses the effect of multicultural literature on students as well as the need for teachers to bring quality multicultural literature into the classroom. The need for multicultural literature in the classroom is laid out. A professional development workshop for teachers was constructed to help professionals incorporate multicultural literature in their classrooms. The key features of the workshop include: discussion of the importance of multicultural literature, finding high quality multicultural literature and how to provide opportunities for students with multicultural literature in the classroom.

Instead, the funds of knowledge approach attempts to accomplish something that may be even more challenging: to alter the perceptions of working-class or poor communities by viewing their households primarily in terms of their strengths and resources, their defining pedagogical characteristics.
