Book excerpt: In my mathematics teaching experiences, I have found students encountering difficulties in successfully remembering and demonstrating all of the major concepts they have learned during the school year. Whether or not the students actually learn and remember the content is a problem numerous teachers experience. As a result, I decided to implement writing into a lower-level seventh grade math classroom to determine if writing would affect student learning. The study was implemented with sixteen lower-level seventh grade math students during the first ten weeks of the 2008-2009 school year at Northwest Junior High in the Iowa City Community School District. Pre-surveys and post-surveys were given to students to determine their attitudes toward mathematics and writing. A pretest and posttest was also administered to assess the effects writing ad on students' growth and achievement over the en week study. Students used their writing skills to explain their reasoning behind their answers. Students also wrote in a journal an average of two times per week. Results from the study showed a minimal increase in the number of students having a positive attitude towards math along with a minimal increase in student achievement. These results may be due to implementation of writing in the mathematics curriculum.

I decided that it must be possible to work towards several goals without doing several tasks. As a result, I implemented writing would affect student achievement. The study was implemented with 22 pre-calculus students during the first nine-week term of 2007-2008 school year at Benton Community Schools. Existing student attitudes towards math were assessed with a survey at the beginning of the study and reassessed at the conclusion of the study. A pretest of pre-calculus concepts was given at the beginning and at the conclusion of the study. Questions were split between skill-based questions, which required a numeric response, and conceptual-based questions, which required a numeric response, and conceptual-based questions, which required a written explanation. Students also wrote in a journal an average of two times per week. Two formal writing assignments were also given throughout the nine-week study. Results showed an increase in the number of students showing a positive attitude towards math along with an increase in student achievement. These results may be due to the implementation of writing in the mathematic curriculum.

It specifically looked for the outcomes journal writing would have on students with learning disabilities' grades in the math class, and on their attitudes about math in general. The study was done on five sixth grade students with learning disabilities; three males and two females. An exam was distributed to the students both before and after the implementation of journal writing, to see the outcomes journals had on student grades. Students were also given a 20 question attitude scale before and after the journal writing research. A journal writing evaluation was then distributed to all of the participants to reflect on their experience. Data from the study indicated that journal writing has a positive effect on student grades because the majority of the students increased their math grades. Three out of the five participants increased their math grades based on the exam they took, while one student's grade stayed the same and another student's grade went down. This student however was absent for two of the journal writing days during the study. The research data also suggests that journal writing can have a positive effect on students with learning disabilities' attitudes towards math because three of the five participants' attitudes became more positive after the study was implemented. The study recommends the use of journal writing as an alternate teaching tool for educators and an additional form of assessment for students with learning disabilities.

Nine students in the sixth grade participated in the study conducted in an urban middle school housing 1,132 students in grades six through eight. Methods of gathering data included teacher observation, student surveys, formal and informal interviews, and student work. Methods of analysis included analyzing and coding data, review of student work, along with the review of various authors, and the construction of theme statements. The students were presented with various writing activities including: journals, word wall writings, and open ended questioning. Findings suggest increased vocabulary acquisition, increased student motivation in the math classroom, the ability to recognize math in the real world, increased usage of notes, and the effect of reading ability on problem solving skills.

(1) Will instruction in multiple learning strategies improve my students' sense of self-efficacy as writers? (2) What happens when students, identified with difficulty writing responses to writing prompts, generate their own mnemonic device about the process of deconstructing writing prompts? (3) How will using the instructional approach of teacher-student modeling affect seventh graders' ability to write appropriate responses to all aspects of a writing prompt? (4) What happens when students identified with difficulty writing responses to writing prompts, generate their own questions? Research activities: This research explored the effectiveness of multiple instructional strategies centered on the teaching of deconstructing writing prompts to improve students' writing skills and self-efficacy as writers. Context: The inquiry took place in a seventh-grade World History classroom. The study focused on two female and three male seventh grade students. One student was high performing and the other four were average or low performing. Methods and Data: The inquiry took place over a five-week period and consisted of students practicing three instructional strategies: the Mnemonic Device, Teacher Student Modeling and Question Generation. Students were first given an introduction to a mnemonic device created to assist them with remembering essential steps of deconstructing writing prompts. They were required to generate a mnemonic song in order to memorize this process. Students utilized this mnemonic device to deconstruct two daily opener activities and write appropriate responses. Student work was analyzed using a rubric emphasized throughout the intervention. Students learned to identify various aspects of questions. They also learned how to recognize the tasks included in writing prompt questions. This knowledge facilitated the organization of their thought process and helped them construct well-written responses. This process to deconstruct writing prompts was emphasized throughout the intervention. Students completed a few worksheets illustrating their thought processes when deconstructing writing prompts. Observation data were collected through an audio recording and field notes were collected as well. Students practiced generating writing prompt questions to well written writing prompt responses and finally participated in an assessment responding to four separate writing prompt questions and to a questionnaire. To determine the results of the inquiry, I asked students to respond to similar Warm-Up responses prior to and after the intervention. Results: The findings suggest that explicit instruction in the deconstruction of writing prompts improved students' written responses and self-efficacy as writers. However there were many unexplained discrepancies. For example, each time certain responses were analyzed, scores vacillated. After practice with the Mnemonic Device strategy, students' scores vacillated. However, during the Teacher-Student Modeling strategy, the process of deconstructing writing prompts was reinforced, and scores increased by 9% - the highest overall throughout the intervention. Students' scores on their written responses only improved after this, and they did not regress as they had before. It seems as if these two strategies combined were most effective, and they greatly improved the writing of the students. On the final assessment students were required to write responses to four writing prompts, and they scored a 71.5% or C, if I were to give the class a letter grade. The first writing prompt responses in the baseline data scored a 54.82%. Therefore this is an increase of approximately 16.68%. Students went from writing at an F level to writing at a C level on their Warm-Up responses. Grade Level: Seventh, Secondary.
