Book excerpt: Subjects in a second grade classroom, reading below grade level, demonstrated a lack of ability to transfer taught spelling patterns to written work. The researcher provided treatment, using word study instruction, for a group of 10 subjects in Alburnett, Iowa during the fall of 2008. The study used the pretest and posttest approach. This type of research focused on one group of subjects and the effects of a particular treatment on those subjects. Instruction followed a 5 day instructional cycle including weekly pretests and posttests. The hands-on activities included word sorts and word hunts. Data collected included Basic Reading Inventory, Primary Spelling Inventory, weekly sentence dictation assessment, and an observation log of student spelling. Results indicated most subjects making progress according to Basic Reading Inventory and Primary Spelling Inventory scores, however results proved inconclusive when examining student transfer of spelling patterns learned to written work.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to determine how using the Words Their Way (Bear, Invernizzi, Templeton, and Johnston, 2008) approach impacts second grade students' orthographic knowledge. This study used a pretest/posttest design during the fall trimester of the 2009-2010 school year. A pretest was given to determine the correct instructional spelling stage for each student. Students received word study instruction for fifteen minutes each day where they closely examined word patterns. After nine weeks, students were given a posttest to determine how much growth was made. Students were given a spelling survey at the beginning of the study to determine their initial feeling towards spelling. At the conclusion of the study, students were given the same survey to make note of any changes in feelings after receiving word study instruction. Word study instruction from Words Their Way (Bear et al. 2008) was implemented to increase students' orthographic knowledge. Assessments were given and data were collected on a regular basis through the completion of word study activities and spelling tests. The data and results showed an increase in the orthographic knowledge of most students in the study which supported my hypothesis.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to determine if the use of word study, as presented in Words Their Way: Word Study for Phonics, Vocabulary, and Spelling Instruction, would increase first graders' achievement in spelling as compared to the traditional basal method instruction. This study used a pre- and posttest design with a comparison to a control group. The study was administered in two first grad classrooms during the fall semester of the 2009-2010 school year. Two separate pretests were given to determine baseline data for each student prior to the beginning of the treatment. The collection of informal data, in the form of anecdotal records, was gathered on a weekly basis. The posttests were administered at the end of the treatment period. The data collected from the posttests supported our hypothesis that using word study, as presented in Words Their Way, would increase achievement in spelling.

Book excerpt: While most children learn to read fairly well, there remain many young Americans whose futures are imperiled because they do not read well enough to meet the demands of our competitive, technology-driven society. This book explores the problem within the context of social, historical, cultural, and biological factors. Recommendations address the identification of groups of children at risk, effective instruction for the preschool and early grades, effective approaches to dialects and bilingualism, the importance of these findings for the professional development of teachers, and gaps that remain in our understanding of how children learn to read. Implications for parents, teachers, schools, communities, the media, and government at all levels are discussed. The book examines the epidemiology of reading problems and introduces the concepts used by experts in the field. In a clear and readable narrative, word identification, comprehension, and other processes in normal reading development are discussed. Against the background of normal progress, Preventing Reading Difficulties in Young Children examines factors that put children at risk of poor reading. It explores in detail how literacy can be fostered from birth through kindergarten and the primary grades, including evaluation of philosophies, systems, and materials commonly used to teach reading.
