Book excerpt: The purpose of the research was to evaluate and compare flexibility changes as a result of Static Stretching, Nautilus Weight Training, Nautilus supplemented by static stretching and a control group. Twenty-eight male volunteers underwent five measures of shoulder flexibility prior to and immediately following a four week training program. The subjects were randomly assigned to four treatment groups; (1)Static Stretching Exercises, (2)Nautilus Weight Training, (3)Nautilus Weight Training supplemented with Static Stretching Exercises and (4)a control group. The data was analyzed using a One-Way Analysis of variance and Newman Xeuls Multiple Comparison Test. Within the confines of the study, the null hypothesis was rejected at the .05 level of confidence for all but one measure of shoulder flexibility (shoulder extension). A comparison of the three treatment groups showed that the Static Stretching group was responsible for statistically significant changes in two of the five flexibility measures, the results from the data showed statistically significant changes in two of the five measures using the Nautilus Training Program and the Nautilus Training Program supplemented by Static Stretching Exercises proved to develop statistically significant increases in four of the five flexibility measures. It was concluded that for best results in flexibility development, the Nautilus Weight Training Program should be supplemented by Static Stretching Exercises and that Nautilus Weight Training alone is better than Static Stretching Exercises alone.

This book was released on 2019 with total page 41 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The ability to throw at higher velocities with proper mechanics is very advantageous for baseball pitchers to increase performance and decrease injury risk. Pitching utilizes the movement of energy through the kinetic chain, wherein momentum is generated by the proximal core segments of the body and transferred to the distal segments of the throwing shoulder and elbow to produce ball velocity. Medicine ball throws (MBT) have been used as a training method for rotational throwing and striking athletes to improve core strength and power. Rotational MBT are sport-specific for baseball pitching because of the similar explosive sequential muscle activation of the pelvis, torso, and arms. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of a side-rotational MBT exercise on pitching biomechanics and ball velocity when performed immediately prior to pitching as a method of post-activation potentiation (PAP). High school, college, and professional aged pitchers (n = 6, age 19.5 ± 3.6 years) were randomly assigned to MBT and control (CON) groups. Both groups threw five pre-trial and five post-trial maximal effort fastballs, with the MBT group performing one set of six side-rotational MBT at maximum effort in between the pre and post-trials while the CON group rested. All pitching trials were recorded by a three-dimensional motion capture system at 240 Hz, from which five temporal, four kinematic, and three kinetic variables were calculated. A 2 x 2 mixed ANOVA for each dependent variable was used for comparisons between and within groups. There were significant interactions between groups and time for peak trunk rotational velocity (p = .049), peak elbow extension velocity (p = .014), and maximum external rotation torque (p = .042). These results may warrant further research into MBT as a method for warming up and eliciting a PAP response for pitching.

Book excerpt: ABSTRACT: The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of a 6-week Postural Restoration (PRI) based strength training protocol versus a 6-week control group on strength, power, and flexibility in collegiate baseball players. Collegiate baseball players (N = 28; 20.36 ± 1.35) at a Division III college in New England participated in this study. Participants were divided into a treatment group (n = 15) and a control (n = 13) group. Pretesting was conducted for an estimated 1-repetition max Front Squat (strength), a bilateral vertical jump (power), and glenohumeral (GH) and femoroacetabular (FA) range of motion (flexibility) measurements. Twelve strength training sessions were conducted for both groups with the treatment group performing pre-exercise PRI based exercises as well as additional PRI based exercises during the training session. Posttesting was completed following the 12 training sessions. Postural Restoration techniques were found to have no statistically significant effect on strength and power when compared to a standard 6-week strength training protocol. Although not statistically significant, Postural Restoration techniques exhibited an additional 1.7% increase in strength measurements when compared to a standard strength training protocol. A significant interaction exists between the PRI-treatment group vs the control group with respect to Right Arm Internal Rotation measurements. The 1.7% increase in the treatment group could be from improvements in hip and trunk strength, posture and core control when bracing a loaded spine during the front sguat exercise. Primary improvements in Right Arm Internal Rotation measurements may be a result of a primary right hand dominant population in a time of year where throwing adaptations cannot be monitored. PRI-based protocols were hypothesized to produce greater improvements in strength, power, and flexibility to a greater extent in comparison to the strength training-control group following the six-week training program, there were no indications of a more favorable prescription method. Thus, both protocols could provide egual benefit to improving strength, power, and flexibility with respect to training collegiate baseball players during the preseason training months.

Created by world renown coach, Cal Dietz, Triphasic Training breaks down dynamic, athletic movements into their three components (eccentric, isometric, and concentric), and maximizes performance gains by applying stress to the athlete in a way that allows for the continuous development of strength, speed, and power. Who uses Triphasic Training: Everyone! From elite level athletes to absolute beginners, the triphasic method of training allows for maximal performance gains in minimal time. For that reason professional athletes from all backgrounds seek out Coach Dietz each off-season to train with his triphasic system. Coach Dietz has worked with hundreds of athletes from the NFL, NHL, and MLB, as well as several dozen Olympic athletes in track and field, swimming, and hockey. What the book is about: Triphasic Training was originally a digital book with over 3,000 hyperlinks and 6 hours of video lectures, showing the reader exactly how to perform every exercise and apply the training methods. To ensure that you do not miss out on this valuable component, inside your book you will find a web link to a downloadable PDF that contains all of the hyperlinks and videos from the original digital book. The PDF is laid out to allow you to easily follow along as you read the book. Simply scroll in the PDF to the page that you are reading in the book and it will have every hyperlink and video that is on that page. The book contains over 350 pages, divided clearly into 2 parts: the “why” and the “what”. The first three sections go through the physiological basis for the Triphasic method, undulated block periodization, and general biological applications of stress. The authors will explain how to incorporate the Triphasic methods into existing programs, with complete descriptions on adapting it to virtually any scenario. Sections 4 through 7 are devoted entirely to programming, with over 3,000 exercises and 52 weeks of programs for numerous different sports. Included in the programming section are: Over 3,000 exercises, each hyperlinked to a video tutorial that shows you exactly how to perform the exercise. 5 separate 24-week training programs built for either 6 day, 5 day, 4 day, 3 day, or 2 day models. Over 6 hours of video lectures by Coach Dietz further explaining the Triphasic Training method. These lectures go even deeper into the physiology and application of what he does with his elite athletes. Over two dozen tables showing exactly when and how to modify exercises to ensure continuous improvement in your athletes. Peaking programs for football lineman or skill players, baseball, swimming, volleyball, and hockey players (among others). A complete 52 week training program for football.

This book was released on 2017-02-24 with total page 688 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The physical demands of tactical professions such as military, law enforcement, and fire and rescue require those workers to be in top physical condition to perform their jobs well and decrease the risk of injury. NSCA’s Essentials of Tactical Strength and Conditioning contains scientific information to assist in implementing or restructuring strength and conditioning programs at commercial or government fitness centers that work with these tactical athletes to achieve those goals. Designed primarily as a preparatory resource for the National Strength and Conditioning Association (NSCA) Tactical Strength and Conditioning Facilitator (TSAC-F) certification, the text is also useful as a manual for government agencies or a daily reference for strength and conditioning professionals. Editors Brent A. Alvar, Katie Sell, and Patricia A. Deuster have extensive experience as scholars and practitioners in their respective fields. They have assembled a team of distinguished contributors who bring to light current trends in strength and conditioning through their combined experiences as professionals in the fields of academia, athletic training, firefighting, law enforcement, military, nutrition, physical therapy, and strength and conditioning. The contributors not only provide foundational knowledge of exercise physiology and biomechanical movement patterns, but they also comprehensively review all of the components necessary for TSAC Facilitators to design and operate successful training programs for tactical athletes. Separate chapters focus on the specific physiological issues related to military, law enforcement, and fire and rescue personnel, including how a strength and conditioning program should directly correlate to their critical job tasks and the specific environmental, occupational, and exposure concerns for each population. Topics such as nutrition, supplements, injury treatment and rehabilitation, wellness interventions, and assessments and evaluations are discussed for professionals who work with tactical populations. Additionally, exercises, drills, and techniques targeting the specific needs of tactical athletes in areas such as flexibility, mobility, speed, agility, power, and aerobic endurance are described in great detail and accompanied by full-color photos. Each chapter of NSCA’s Essentials of Tactical Strength and Conditioning begins with learning objectives and incorporates key terms, diagrams, detailed photographs, and key points throughout the text to help guide readers and facilitate comprehension of concepts. Sidebars and sample programs are included in some chapters to help readers apply theoretical concepts in their professional practice. Additionally, for instructors using the book, or the TSAC-F exam prep symposia, a presentation package plus image bank with more than 300 photos and illustrations is available, making preparation easier with the use of predeveloped materials that correspond with the book’s content. Ultimately, the goal of NSCA’s Essentials of Tactical Strength and Conditioning is to help prepare those seeking TSAC-F certification and to serve as a resource for professionals so that they can implement an optimal strength and conditioning program targeted for tactical athletes that will decrease their risk of injury and optimize performance.
