Book excerpt: This mixed-methods study examined the effects of participation in a 10-week therapeutic horseback riding program on communicative behaviors in participants diagnosed with Autism spectrum disorder or Down syndrome. Certified Therapeutic Riding Instructors utilized the Naples Equestrian Challenge Participant Initial Evaluation to complete a pre-evaluation prior to the first riding session and a post-evaluation during the last session. Following the post-evaluation, the researcher collected qualitative data through conducting parent interviews. The study included 16 participants (M = 12.62; age range 5-23 years old, 8 females and 8 males). Change scores for each participant were calculated and an aggregated mean for pre- and post-evaluations were determined and results indicated increases in all seven communication indicators. Analysis of parent interviews also revealed improvements in communicative skills and behaviors. Overall, results indicate improvements in communication for children and adolescents with developmental disability and the need to further investigate therapeutic horseback riding as an efficacious therapy.

Book excerpt: Animals have long served humans in a working capacity but they have also served as companions and thus, many humans have a bond with animals. Several studies have demonstrated the health benefits of animals on certain ailments and health conditions. While there have been some studies showing the effectiveness of therapeutic riding and hippotherapy on children with disabilities, there has only been one study to date that has evaluated the effects of therapeutic horseback riding (TR) on children with autism spectrum disorders (ASD), yielding tentative positive results in social motivation, sensory seeking/sensitivity, and less distractibility and inattention. The current study sought to expand and partially replicate the previous study to determine possible further effects of therapeutic horseback riding in children with ASD related to social reciprocity, anxiety, repetitive behaviors, and quality of life. Significant main effects were found for TR on social responsiveness and repetitive behaviors, but not for anxiety or quality of life. Implications and limitations of the current study are discussed..

Book excerpt: One of the largest and most complex human services systems in history has evolved to address the needs of people with autism and intellectual disabilities, yet important questions remain for many professionals, administrators, and parents. What approaches to early intervention, education, treatment, therapy, and remediation really help those with autism and other intellectual disabilities improve their functioning and adaptation? Alternatively, what approaches represent wastes of time, effort, and resources? Controversial Therapies for Autism and Intellectual Disabilities, 2nd Edition brings together leading behavioral scientists and practitioners to shed much-needed light on the major controversies surrounding these questions. Expert authors review the origins, perpetuation, and resistance to scrutiny of questionable practices, and offer a clear rationale for appraising the quality of various services. The second edition of Controversial Therapies for Autism and Intellectual Disabilities has been fully revised and updated and includes entirely new chapters on psychology fads, why applied behavioral analysis is not a fad, rapid prompting, relationship therapies, the gluten-free, casein-free diet, evidence based practices, state government regulation of behavioral treatment, teaching ethics, and a parents’ primer for autism treatments.

Book excerpt: This study aims to examine and compare the effects of applied behavior analysis treatments in conjunction with therapeutic horseback riding (THR) and the improvement of social skills in children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). The research study compared the effectiveness of social behavior approaches during three conditions (THR, THR with token reinforcement, and THR with visual cues) using a single-subject research design to determine the "best treatment" for improving social skills among children with ASD (N=4). During the comparison phase, the researcher determined the frequency rate of receptive social skills and frequency of expressive social skills among each condition to determine the most effective approach in facilitating observed social skills. Results of this study indicated that while all three conditions increased social skills (receptive and expressive), the use of token reinforcement was the most effective in increasing the number of receptive and expressive communications. Practical implications and future research needs are provided for addressing social skill development with children with ASD.

Though no cure has been found, recent studies have focused on different therapeutic intervention techniques offered to autistic individuals, including the use of Therapeutic Horseback Riding. This study analyzes the relationship of therapeutic horseback riding on gross motor function in children with Autism. Four children participated in a ten week previously established therapeutic horseback riding program at French Camp, Mississippi. Gross motor function was assessed before and after five riding sessions by recording performances of eleven skills from Motor Skills Inventory (MSI). Only two participants completed all riding sessions and MSI assessments to be eligible for this study. Statistical analysis was conducted using Friedman’s Two Way Analysis of Variance by Ranks. There were no significant differences in the assessments before/after the riding sessions as well as the entire period of the ten week program.

Book excerpt: THE EFFECTS OF HORSEBACK RIDING THERAPY ON COGNITION AND LANGUAGE IN CHILDREN WITH COGNITIVE IMPAIRMENT Sara Kwon, MD, In Young Sung, MD, PhD, Eun Jae Ko, MD, Han Seon Kim, MD,1Department of Rehabilitation Medicine, Asan Medical Center,University of Ulsan College of Medicine, Seoul, Korea2Ulsan City E Hospital, Ulsan, KoreaIntroduction Recently, there has been a growing interest in horseback riding therapy (HRT) as one of alternative rehabilitation methods. This study was designed to investigate if horseback riding therapy can improve language and cognitive function in children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) or intellectual disability (ID). Method We conducted prospective, randomized controlled study, including patients who have been diagnosed as ASD or ID. 18 and 11 patients were enrolled as HRT and control group, respectively. HRT group underwent conventional therapy plus 30 minutes of HRT per week for 8 weeks and control group only received conventional therapy. The subjects were assessed for their cognitive (K-ABC, cognitive domain of BSID-II) and language function (PRES, REVT, M-B CDI-K) within one month before and after treatment. Results There was no baseline difference between two groups. In HRT group, the result showed statistically significant improvements in most domains after HRT including receptive, expressive language and cognition, except for infant scale of M-B CDI-K. However, in control group, only receptive language function assessed by REVT and cognitive function assessed by BSID-II showed improvements. When comparing changes between HRT group and control group, HRT group showed more improvements than control group, however, these results were not statistically significant. Conclusions The results suggest that HRT might affect development of language and cognitive function of these patients. Further study would be needed to confirm whether HRT is one of effective methods for improving language and cognition in children with ASD or ID.AbbreviationsREVT, Receptive and Expressive Vocabulary TestPRES, Preschool Receptive-Expressive Language ScaleM-B CDI-K, MacArthur-Bates Communicative Development Inventories- Korean versionBSID-II, Bayley Scales of Infant Development-II K-ABC, Kaufman Assessment Battery for Children.

Book excerpt: Objective: Currently, there is a deficit of established treatments for Autism Spectrum Disorders, and many of the successful alternative therapies are highly unexamined and often unregulated. Although there is a distinct lack of comprehensive, large scale studies on the use of structured animal exposure and play therapy with children who are diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorders; past research has shown a number of benefits and positive outcomes (Siewertsen, French, & Teramoto, 2015). The objective of this study is to evaluate the effect, if any, which structured equine therapy sessions have on the emotional well being and concentration skills of children with Autism Spectrum Disorders, according to reports by their parents. Hypothesis: Structured Equine Therapy Sessions have a positive impact on the emotional well-being and concentration skills of individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorders. Methods: This study is a primary data analysis of 37 individuals diagnosed with an Autism Spectrum Disorder under the age of 18 years of age, residing in the state of California that attend Structured Equine Therapy sessions in Simi Valley, California. The data were collected from a survey completed by their parents which is titled, Structured Equine Therapy Evaluation Survey. Results: Of the 37 respondents, 70% agreed or strongly agreed that they had noticed a vii positive effect on their child's emotional well-being, 60% agreed or strongly agreed that they had noticed an improvement in their child's mood, and 73% agreed or strongly agreed that there had been an improvement in their child's concentration skills after they participated in structured equine therapy. Conclusion: Structured Equine Therapy may show positive impacts on multiple areas of the lives of children with Autism Spectrum Disorders and additional evidence based research may help this type of therapy gain recognition and legitimacy.
