Book excerpt: According to the Advancement Via Individual Determination (AVID) website, there are multiple studies comparing the academic achievement of AVID students to non-AVID students. This research study was uniquely designed to determine the effectiveness of the AVID program in large urban school districts in the south based on students’ junior year academic performance on state assessments such as the ACT, English III, Math III, and chemistry exams. This study also examined comparisons between graduation rates, suspensions, and attendance. A one-way ANOVA was conducted to compare means of three groups during this study including AVID elective students, non-AVID elective students attending non-AVID schools, and non-AVID elective students attending AVID schools. An analysis of the results of the study indicated that junior year academic achievement means do not show a significant difference with ACT composite scores or state assessment performance in Math III, English III, and chemistry. However, the means for AVID elective students were slightly higher. Non-AVID students had slightly higher ACT composite score means. The results of the study indicated that the graduation rates, suspension, and attendance data do not reflect a significant difference between AVID elective students attending AVID schools, non-AVID students attending non-AVID schools, nor non-AVID elective students attending AVID schools. However, AVID elective students had slightly lower ISS, OSS, and days absent from school. Recommendations for future study were provided.

Book excerpt: This study examines the implementation and outcomes of the Advancement Via Individual Determination (AVID) program within the context of urban middle schools. AVID is a college and career readiness program designed to support students from historically underrepresented backgrounds in their academic pursuits. The purpose of this study was to investigate how the AVID program is implemented in urban middle schools and to determine its impact on students’ academic performance. Using a mixed-methods approach, this research employs quantitative and qualitative data collection methods to gather comprehensive insights. The study involves semi-structured interviews with teachers, campus administrators, district administrators, and coordinators involved with the implementation of the AVID program. Additionally, academic records and standardized test scores were analyzed to measure the outcomes for students who participated in the AVID program compared to their non-AVID peers. The findings of this study will contribute to the existing knowledge on the effectiveness of the AVID program specifically in urban middle schools. By examining the implementation strategies utilized by schools, this research aims to identify the factors that contribute to successful program execution. Furthermore, it seeks to explore how the AVID program influences students' college aspirations and their overall educational experiences in urban middle schools. The outcomes of this research include a comprehensive understanding of the challenges and opportunities associated with implementing the AVID program in urban middle schools. The study will also shed light on the impact of the program on academic performance, college aspirations, and the overall educational trajectory of participating students. These findings will inform educators, administrators, and policymakers of the potential benefits and limitations of implementing the AVID program within urban middle school settings. Overall, this dissertation seeks to contribute to the body of research on the AVID program by providing empirical evidence on its implementation and outcomes in urban middle schools. The findings will offer valuable insights to guide future program implementation and inform strategies to enhance the educational experiences and outcomes of students from underrepresented backgrounds in urban settings

Book excerpt: This research study examined the impact of the Advancement Via Individual Determination (AVID) program on students' self-efficacy and academic achievement outcome measures at the middle and high school level. AVID is a college readiness system designed to prepare at-risk students in the fourth through 12th grade for college. The main focus of this study was to determine if there was a difference in students' self-efficacy based on the number of years in the AVID program and if there was a difference in AVID students' academic achievement outcome measures between seventh and eighth grade in reading and math. Participants included seventh through 11th grade AVID students in one suburban school district within northeast Ohio (N = 239). These students reported perceptions of their self-efficacy on the My Voice Survey (QISA, 2010). Student achievement data were obtained from the 2010-2011 Ohio Department of Education Local Report Card. Through multivariate analysis of variance (MANOVA) the data were analyzed. Findings from this study indicated that there were statistically significant differences in students' self-efficacy based on the number of years in the AVID program and statistically significant differences in academic achievement outcome measures between seventh and eighth grade for AVID students in reading and math. AVID students' active engagement was statistically significant in year 1 of the AVID program when compared to year 2, year 3 or more. Seventh grade AVID students' math scores had a statistically significant higher mean score (414.66) than did eighth grade AVID students' math scores (403.02). These results suggested that AVID students' self-efficacy and academic achievement outcomes did not increase as they progressed through the program. The data showed that perhaps the AVID program may not be the answer to the problem that was posed in this study and that the AVID program alone may not be the reason for the findings of the study. The results may be attributed to other variables beyond the AVID program, such as high quality instruction from teachers, mentoring from tutors, support from guidance counselors, or encouragement from family members.

Book excerpt: Preparing students for success in their educational endeavors and beyond is the primary function of schools and, yet, how to do so is one of the most hotly debated issues of education today. Programs such as Advancement Via Individual Determination, or AVID, seek to help students become more successful and more prepared for college and also hope to close the achievement gap. This study examines the impact of the AVID program at one Southern California high-performing school on its students' academics and perceptions of school and learning. The study found that students within the AVID program increased their GPAs and those who had been in for two years had even stronger growth. Additionally, results showed that students overwhelmingly felt that the program had a positive impact on their school and learning, most especially on aspects of organization, collaboration, and the AVID family.

Book excerpt: Student disengagement in the learning process is problematic, especially in the middle grades. Studies show that technology infusion in classroom instruction promotes student learning and behavior when effectively integrated. Employing the theory of constructivism, this study explored technology infusion in a college and career readiness program based on the assumption that integration aids in the construction of knowledge. The purpose of this study was to analyze the difference between the performance scores of AVID and non-AVID groups in middle schools. Archived test results for the Preliminary Scholastic Achievement Test (PSAT) were compared on a sample of non-AVID and AVID middle school groups in schools with both programs located in Texas. A quantitative casual-comparative design explored the dependent and independent variables. PSAT performance scores represented the dependent variable. The independent variable was defined as the type of instruction provided (AVID vs. Non-AVID). The independent samples t-test tested hypotheses for significance at 0.05 level. There was not a statistically significant difference in the mean scores of the two groups in the schools. The results had implications for determining whether technology integration assists in motivating students to perform and for aiding the teaching profession in general in decision making regarding infusing technology in classroom instruction.

Book excerpt: In recent years, there have been countless initiatives and programs meant to improve the educational system in the U.S. However, the emphasis on testing forces teachers to teach to a test and limits their ability to authentically care for students. Advancement Via Individual Determination, AVID, is one of the various policies being implemented to reform K-12 public schools. AVID is a privately run, independent organization that collaborates with school districts and schools to increase academic achievement. One of the many ways the program is designed to do this is through an emphasis on teacher collaboration. In this book, I examine the AVID program and how it fosters a caring environment, looking specifically at teacher collaboration in three Southern California high schools. What limits teacher collaboration and what do these limitations suggest about the possibility of caring in today's schools? This research should illuminate the importance of caring in schools and should be useful to school boards, teachers, parents, administrators, policymakers, and representatives from the AVID program.

Book excerpt: "This research addresses how AVID strategies impact student achievement. The literature review provides a historical context for the achievement gap and remedies which have been enacted to combat disparities among student populations. The research looks at a newly implemented AVID program and asks the students to rate various AVID components and determine if they play a key role in helping the students meet their learning objectives. The highlighted AVID components included organization, advocacy, college exposure, and advanced course enrollment. Most participants found AVID strategies pivotal in fostering a sense of achievement. Furthermore, the AVID Coordinator observed how students were beginning to see how AVID strategies transferred across disciplines and had long-term benefits for future college environments" --

Book excerpt: State assessment data were examined from two comprehensive high schools and used to determine the effectiveness of the AVID program on student achievement and graduation rates. At the time of this study, one comprehensive high school had the program for 13 years and the other comprehensive high school never had the AVID program. Also, the study was designed to determine if AVID is predictive of student achievement. An Independent-Samples T Test analysis was conducted to determine if there was a difference in English language arts and mathematics achievement between high school students who enrolled in the AVID program and students who did not enroll in AVID, but met the admission criteria. A multiple regression analysis was conducted to determine the strength of the relationship between student achievement on the CST English language arts and AVID enrollment, ethnicity, gender, and free lunch. A descriptive analysis was conducted to examine graduation rates over a four-year period (2008 to 2012). The results of this study indicate the AVID program may not necessarily contribute to higher Academic Performance Index (API) scores or improve student achievement on standardized tests at a comprehensive high school. A descriptive analysis of graduation data showed there is a difference between AVID and non-AVID high school student graduation rates, in favor of those who were enrolled in AVID.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this journal is to report on results from research conducted from a survey done in person. The research focuses on high school students both in and out of the AVID (Advancement Via Individual Determination) program. Students were asked a series of questions that focused on the following themes: building cultural capital, college access, and growth mindset. The nature and purpose of the research study was to look at the impact AVID had with helping close the achievement gap for students with low socioeconomic backgrounds. The high school was set in a public high SES community. The researcher analyzed where the AVID program at that particular school helped students from low SES backgrounds and where it needed to further support them. Findings found that students in the AVID program generally felt they were less likely to try again and also felt they had more college access. Keywords: AVID, SES, cultural capital, college access, growth mindset
