It is curious that each discipline has received considerable attention in its own right but little effort has been made to cross-fertilize them. Some experimentalists view this union as the equivalent of committing academic adultery; they have tended to concentrate on general theories and models of motor control and movement, viewing individual differences as awkward and best assigned to the error variance component of an analysis. By neglecting person variables, valuable information is discarded: people do differ in terms of ability, attitude, motivation and temperament and it is hardly surprising that such differences interact with a variety of experimental and situational para digms. The causes and determinants of individual differences must be examined at an interdisciplinary level, incorporating studies from experimental, physio logical, clinical and educational psychology. This synthesis could not have been actualized by any single contributor. For this reason, a multi-authored approach has been adopted, in which 17 specialists have been assembled to present the current position of individual difference research in their respective disciplines. The authors were granted maximum freedom in their selection and present ation of material. What emerges is, hopefully, a novel and informative col lection of articles addressed to a wide audience and providing an impulse for further research.

It is our belief that clinical theory relat ed to personality, social skills, and psychopathology can be enriched by re search findings from a wide range of fields-from human genetics, tempera ment, and personality to family systems, affect, psychophysiology, and learning. This book is divided into an introductory chapter and three sections. The introductory chapter provides an overview of the issues in the field, compares models, and provides suggestions for further integration and ar ticulation of concepts related to personality, social skills, and psycho pathology. The book's first section presents state-of-the-art general models of interactions among personality, social skills, and psychopathology. Con nolly opens this section with a chapter that reviews longitudinal findings in dicating that personality traits predict the onset of psychopathology and marital distress. The etiology of these and related findings is the subject of other chapters in this section.

Part 1 of the book introduces the TSD technique with detailed instructions for data collection, coding, and analysis. Part 2 covers reports on a study of Polish bank employees. The chapters of Part 3 reflect the experience of dangerous work situations in a steel factory, the emotional adjustment of adolescents to short and long-term unemployment, and the influences of husbands' daily or weekly commuting on their wives coping with housework and childcare. The chapters of Part 4 take a more philosophical approach to the material. The first contribution shows that personality traits influence well-being primarily in situations characterized by freedom of choice; the second introduces a rather new methodological approach clarifying the affinities of situations and subjective experience.
