This book was released on 1971 with total page 30 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cyclic deformation behavior and fracture mechanisms of Ferrovac E iron under low cycle fatigue conditions are studied at temperatures ranging from 23 to 540 C, cyclic deformation rates from 4 x 10-4 to 2 x 10-1 s-1, and strain ranges from 0.010 to 0.040. The stress response during strain cycling shows three stages, primary hardening, steady state behavior, and secondary hardening. Both the onset and duration of secondary hardening are dependent on deformation rate and temperature through the process of dynamic strain aging. Stress response sensitivity to deformation rate increases under conditions which permit changes in both internal and effective stress components. There is a variation in the internal stress component at the blue brittleness temperature (370 C) caused by an increase in total dislocation density due to dynamic strain aging. However, at higher temperatures (485 to 540 C) a variation in the internal stress component is caused by accelerated thermal recovery. Steady state cyclic deformation in this temperature range is observed to be consistent with models for steady state creep and hot-working. The fracture mechanism and fatigue life are mainly influenced by the characteristics of stress and strain redistribution and the inhomogeneity of plastic-strains. This inhomogeneity of deformation results from dynamic strain aging effects during fatigue. A parameter which controls stress response, fatigue behavior, and fracture mode under dynamic strain aging conditions is presented.

Book Synopsis Effect of Loading Rate and Thermal Aging on the Fracture Toughness of Stainless-Steel Alloys by : WJ. Mills
Download or read book Effect of Loading Rate and Thermal Aging on the Fracture Toughness of Stainless-Steel Alloys written by WJ. Mills and published by . This book was released on 1989 with total page 17 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The effect of loading rate on the fracture toughness of Types 304 and 316 stainless-steel plate and Type 308 weld before and after thermal aging was characterized using both fracture mechanics and Charpy specimens. Aging at 566°C for 10 000 h reduced static Jc initiation toughness values for both wrought and weld metals by 10 to 20%, and tearing moduli were reduced by 20 to 30%. Under semi-dynamic and dynamic loading conditions, the fracture resistance was not decreased below the static response for either unaged or aged materials. The present results also demonstrated that the large degradation in Charpy V-notch impact energy after aging was not representative of the impact resistance for stainless-steel components containing cracks or crack-life defects. Fractographic examinations revealed that the large loss in Charpy energy was associated with aging-induced microstructural changes that substantially decreased the energy required to initiate a crack from a blunt notch. At very slow strain rates, creep crack growth was found to cause a significant degradation in fracture toughness.

Book Synopsis Materials Ageing and Degradation in Light Water Reactors by : K L Murty
Download or read book Materials Ageing and Degradation in Light Water Reactors written by K L Murty and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2013-02-18 with total page 441 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Light water reactors (LWRs) are the predominant class of nuclear power reactors in operation today; however, ageing and degradation can influence both their performance and lifetime. Knowledge of these factors is therefore critical to safe, continuous operation. Materials ageing and degradation in light water reactors provides a comprehensive guide to prevalent deterioration mechanisms, and the approaches used to handle their effects.Part one introduces fundamental ageing issues and degradation mechanisms. Beginning with an overview of ageing and degradation issues in LWRs, the book goes on to discuss corrosion in pressurized water reactors and creep deformation of materials in LWRs. Part two then considers materials’ ageing and degradation in specific LWR components. Applications of zirconium alloys in LWRs are discussed, along with the ageing of electric cables. Materials management strategies for LWRs are then the focus of part three. Materials management strategies for pressurized water reactors and VVER reactors are considered before the book concludes with a discussion of materials-related problems faced by LWR operators and corresponding research needs. With its distinguished editor and international team of expert contributors, Materials ageing and degradation in light water reactors is an authoritative review for anyone requiring an understanding of the performance and durability of this type of nuclear power plant, including plant operators and managers, nuclear metallurgists, governmental and regulatory safety bodies, and researchers, scientists and academics working in this area. Introduces the fundamental ageing issues and degradation mechanisms associated with this class of nuclear power reactors Considers materials ageing and degradation in specific light water reactor components, including properties, performance and inspection Chapters also focus on material management strategies
