Book excerpt: Despite the growing importance of post-secondary degree attainment, existing research indicates that first-generation students (FGS) at 4-year colleges and universities are twice as likely as their peers to drop-out of school before their second year of study, and a great proportion of these students never return to complete their undergraduate degree. The present study collected and analyzed institutional data to determine the impact of three programmatic strategies on student retention and academic outcomes for FGS. The strategies are: lower/upper-level student integration, faculty mentorship, peer mentorship, and Communities of Learning (CoL). Each was investigated in the context of a student retention program at a historically Black College and university (HBCU) using multivariate analysis. The sample used for this study was 75 first-year, full-time FGS currently enrolled in the retention program at a private, 4-year institution. The results indicate that of the three retention strategies studied, faculty mentorship and students' participation in CoL activities most greatly impact their engagement. Additionally findings suggest that while none of the three strategies are direct correlates to retention, all three may act as mediators to improve engagement, which has been historically linked to retention.

With reference to Weber's work on bureaucracy and Baumeister's work on social inclusion, the relevance of the Tinto model of retention is investigated within the context of an HBCU. Findings support the idea that students at the HBCU engage in more formal than informal social interaction, and to some degree revealed that level of social interaction was related to level of satisfaction with university experience. However, results indicated that level of satisfaction was related to only one of the two dependent measures. Nevertheless, some support for the usefulness of the Tinto model was found, yet the study also revealed that there are factors peculiar to the African American student community that need to be identified and researched in further depth if we are to have a comprehensive model, with predictive value that can help researchers, educators and administrators understand the nuances of the African American student and why they stay or drop out of university. -- Abstract.

In an effort to alleviate this problem, postsecondary institutions invest in a variety of programs designed to improve student retention. Even though a great amount of time and money is invested in retention efforts, current retention rates have not improved over time (Seidman, 2002). This is particularly troubling for African Americans whose retention rates historically have lagged behind those of Whites and Asians (Davis, 1994). In fact, only about 46 % of African Americans who first enroll in four-year institutions with the goal of completing a bachelor's degree actually succeed within six years. While Historically Black colleges and universities (HBCUs) enroll 26% of all African American students and produce 28% of the Black bachelor degree recipients, most have lower than average retention rates. Although the literature suggests that retention studies in higher education are plentiful, and that African American students enrolled at HBCUs are at high risk of dropping out of college before completing a degree, few studies have addressed the issue of student retention at HBCUs. Using survey data collected from first-year African American students enrolled at a public HBCU, and employing factor analysis, hierarchical logistic regression analysis, and conditional logistic regression analysis, this study examines the impact of student involvement with campus life on retention. The results of this study indicate that both academic involvement and social involvement are predictors of student retention for firstyear African American freshmen enrolled at a public HBCU. However, academic involvement proved to be a negative predictor of student retention. Since there are no other studies that directly examine the influence of student involvement on retention of African American students at a public HBCU, these results can add to the modest knowledge base of African American student retention research at H.

Louis B. Gallien, Jr. is Professor of Urban Education at Regent University. Previously, he taught at Spelman College and held adjunct positions at Morehouse College and Emory University. His areas of speciality are in African American pedagogy, culture and urban education. His monograph on African American males attitudes towards education entitled: "LostVoices: Reflections on Education From An Imperlied Generation, " an examinaton of five distinct high school cultures, was considered to be a ground-breaking study in 1990 and widely-reported in the "Boston Globe, Jackson Clarion-Ledger, Lexington Herald, Essence, Ebony" and journals across the country. Since that time, he has written articles, essays and monographs on hip-hop culture and the framing of values among African American College students, the pedagogical ramifications of W.E.B.DuBois collected works on black college students, and curricular impact of CORE Knowledge on the academic achievement levels of African American middle grade students. Dr. Marshalita Sims Peterson, Ph.D., is chair and assistant professor in the Education Department at Spelman College in Atlanta, Georgia. Her research includes curriculum development and implementation as it relates to culturally responsive pedagogy, oral communication skills in higher education, and instructional strategies for all children. Her action research facilitated the opening of a charter school in the Atlanta metropolitan area. As an advocate for ensuring that students reach their full potential, Dr. Peterson has presented nationally and internationally on quality education, student achievement, and innovative instruction for all students. Book excerpt: Improving the retention and graduation of African Americans and other minority groups in higher education is an important but highly politicized issue on college and university campuses. Prior studies emphasize the relationship between minority retention and achievement, cultural diversity, and racial policies and climates at predominantly White colleges and universities in the United States. In response to the need for further research, the effects of institutional actions related to diversity, minority group and African American retention, and social integration initiatives on African American graduation rates were examined for a national sample of United States (U.S.) colleges and universities. From a potential list of 7,018 colleges and universities, 2,233 met the inclusion criteria for the study. But necessary and complete information from national directories and the census could only be found for the final sample of 1,105. After dropping 30 outliers, several multiple regression analyses identified the institutional actions, social, and demographic factors that best predicted graduation rates. Public U.S. colleges and universities located in the Midwest region had lower African American graduation rates than private colleges and universities located in the South. Higher African American graduation rates occurred in colleges and universities with Black cultural centers, higher first-year retention rates, higher women enrollment rates, a higher number of student organizations, and Division III athletic programs. Colleges and universities located in a town had higher African American graduation rates than those located in a city, suburb, or rural area.
