Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to examine non-identifying archival data from the 2012-2013 school year to assess the effect participation in the Student Success Skills (SSS) school counselor-led classroom guidance program (Brigman & Webb, 2010) had on the behavioral and cognitive engagement of grade 5 Exceptional Student Education (ESE) students serviced within the general education classroom setting. Data for this study was collected at three different intervals. School attendance data was collected on students during the 2012, 2013, and 2014 school years when students were enrolled in grades 4, 5, and 6 respectively. Pre-test self-report data was collected within two weeks prior to implementation of the SSS program. Posttest self-report data was collected within two weeks immediately following completion of the intervention and post-posttest self-report data was collected 30 weeks post-intervention. School counselors and classroom teachers were trained in the SSS program. Students received five 45 minute classroom lessons delivered one week apart followed by three booster sessions delivered one month apart. Lessons were designed to teach cognitive, social, self-management, and test-taking skills. This study followed a randomized controlled trial (RCT) design. For the purposes of this study behavioral engagement was measured by school attendance data. Cognitive engagement was measured by the Test Anxiety and Metacognitive Activity scales of the Motivated Strategies for Learning Questionnaire (MSLQ) (Pintrich & DeGroot, 1990) and the Self-Regulation of Arousal scale of the Student Engagement in School Success Skills (SESSS) survey (Carey, Webb, Brigman, & Harrington, 2010). A series of multivariate analysis of covariance (MANCOVA) tests were conducted to determine whether or not there were statistically significant differences between the treatment and control groups. While no statistically significant differences were evident on the Metacognitive Activity scale, results indicated a statistically significant decrease in absences and test anxiety for students in the treatment group. Additionally, a statistically significant increase was evident on the Self-Regulation of Arousal scale for students in the treatment group. This study suggests that research-based school counseling programs delivered in small or large groups using inclusionary practices may be beneficial in supporting the academic achievement and social-emotional adjustment of ESE students.

Book excerpt: Self-concept is related to student academic achievement and locus of control (Coleman et al., 1966), intrapersonal and interpersonal processes (Markus & Wurf, 1987), and many long-term outcomes, such as satisfaction with one's job, marriage, and life in general (Mortimer et al., 1982). Although self-concept is fairly malleable in early adolescence, it becomes more stable and rigid in high school (Bachman, O'Malley, & Johnston, 1978; Protinsky & Farrier, 1980). While interventions targeting self-concept have generally been found to be successful (Hattie, 2014), the associations between specific school- based recognitions for achievement and student self-concept have yet to be investigated. Using data from the National Educational Longitudinal Study of 1988 (NCES, 1996), the following analysis investigated the associations between different school-based recognitions for achievement and students' self-concept. In this study, a set of school- based recognition variables was identified and hierarchical linear modeling (HLM) analyses was used to build an ANCOVA with random effects model predicting student self-concept in the 10th grade while controlling for gender, race, socioeconomic status (SES), and prior self-concept (8th grade) scores. Results indicate support for the use of HLM statistical methods and the inclusion of the aforementioned covariates. However, none of the predictor variables from the identified set of school-based recognition variables were significantly related to self-concept when entered into the model. Implications for school psychology research and practice are presented within a multitiered systems of supports (MTSS) framework, including suggestions for the implementation of positive behavioral interventions and supports (PBIS).

Book excerpt: The basic problem of this investigation was to determine if peer counselors could be effective as group counselors for Educational Opportunity Program (EOP), freshman students. This effectiveness would be demonstrated by changes in self concept and academic adjustment for those students who participated in the group counseling process. This investigation was designed to examine students with peers as group counselors (Group I), students with an EOP staff counselor as the leader of the group counseling process (Group II) and students who did not participate in either group counseling procedure (Group III). The sample of the study consisted of 29 freshman students who entered Oregon State University through the Office of Educational Opportunity during the fall term of the 1973 school year. These students were divided among three groups in such a way as to insure a balance according to sex and ethnic group membership. The Tennessee Self Concept Scale (TSCS) served as a measure of change in self concept and the College Inventory of Academic Adjustment (CIAA) was used to measure changes in adjustment. The Group Behavior Rating Scale (GBRS) was used with the experimental groups only and served to measure changes in group behavior. These instruments were administered under pre and posttest conditions during the fall quarter. The total scores were used for testing the statistical hypotheses. Seven hypotheses related to the effects of group counseling and peers on self concept and academic adjustment were tested, using a t test, analysis of variance and covariance and a test for correlation. Hypotheses were designed to compare pre and post-test mean scores for each group in order to determine if significant changes occurred within groups. Comparisons were made between. groups I and II to examine whether changes occurred more fres, . quently with peers or staff counselors as the group fagilitators. Further comparisons were made between the Treatments (Groups I and II) and Controls (Group III) to examine the effects of the group counseling procedure. The group participants (Groups I and II) changed positively though not significantly on all subscores on the TSCS while the group of individuals who did not participate in the group procedure did not show such changes. There were, significant differences on certain subscores of the instruments used. These subscores were Identity on the TSCS, Personal Relations on the CIAA, and Self Confidence and Cooperation on the GBRS. However, the general hypotheses were rejected in terms of total scores.
