Book excerpt: It is well known that ice sheets heavily influence groundwater systems, however, the impact of groundwater on ice sheet dynamics is not. This poorly understood aspect of ice-sheet hydrology is relevant to the subglacial hydrology of ice sheets lacking surface or englacial meltwater such as the East Antarctic Ice Sheet (EAIS). How groundwater systems redistribute geothermal heat at the base of an ice sheet is also largely unknown. Geothermal heat and subglacial hydrology are important basal processes controlling ice flow. Large sedimentary basins underlie the EAIS, which likely play host to many groundwater systems. I hypothesized that groundwater systems in these sedimentary basins may be the main water transport mechanism over water sheets (or films) at large scales in the interior of the ice sheet where basal melt rates are very low. I also hypothesized that these groundwater systems are likely important to the basal processes (specifically heat flux) and dynamics of the EAIS (particularly in rheological and sliding behavior). To test these, I created various one- and two-dimensional numerical models incorporating relevant datasets and conservative assumptions about the subsurface. The models ranged from simple groundwater and thermal simulations to a complex subsurface fluid and thermal model coupled to a fully dynamic ice sheet simulator. The models suggest that groundwater most likely has measurable effects on the dynamics of ice sheets like the EAIS. I have shown that probable groundwater systems underneath the interior of the EAIS can likely transport most of the meltwater produced and that groundwater can strongly affect the heat flux (positively, as well as, negatively) at the ice base under kilometers of relatively slow-moving ice. I have also not only shown that groundwater systems under the EAIS are strongly controlled by the ice sheet’s dynamics but that groundwater systems have a feedback to the ice dynamics, mostly through enhanced basal sliding and changes to the ice rheology. These results provide the justification to include groundwater in future simulations of the EAIS as well as a call to collect more data to better delineate its subsurface sedimentary basins – a critical input for groundwater and heat transport modeling.

Book excerpt: This dissertation focuses on the Wilkes Land region of the East Antarctic Ice Sheet (EAIS) that is predominantly characterized by two large subglacial basins, the Aurora Subglacial Basin (ASB) to the east and the Wilkes Subglacial Basin (WSB) to the west and immediately adjacent to the Transantarctic Mountains (TAM). The ASB and WSB are expansive covering an estimated 750,000 and 980,000 square kilometers, respectively. In addition, their bedrock geometry places them an average of 1.25 km below present day sea level, raising the possibility of fundamental instability through grounding line retreat. Subglacial sediment deformation has long been known to facilitate faster ice flow and significantly impact basal ice conditions including geothermal heat flux, groundwater flow, and frictional heat flux. Recently acquired aerogeophysical data over the interior ASB and WSB document extensive subglacial sedimentary basins that can be distinguished as smaller subbasins, each associated with adjacent topographic highlands and EAIS dynamics. The volumes of these interior subglacial subbasins vary between 26,349 +/- 10,885 km3 and 398,082 +/- 164,454 km3 in the ASB and 7,188 +/- 2,940 km3 and 128,094 +/- 52,399 km3 in the WSB (based upon 20% porosity values). Notably, the character of the basins varies substantially between the more southern ASB and WSB interiors and the more marginal, northern ASB and WSB reflective of different dynamic ice histories across geologic time. ASB sedimentary basin volumes, derived from airborne gravity and magnetic data with ice-penetrating radar constraints, are contrasted with recently acquired highresolution marine seismic sequence stratigraphy collected on the Sabrina Coast continental shelf. With targeted geologic sampling of outcropping strata, megasequence sediment volumes are estimated for a finite area adjacent to the Totten Glacier/Moscow University Ice Shelf catchment draining the ASB interior. Preglacial, temperate/polythermal glacial, and polar glacial sediment volumes of 278.6 +/- 148.8 km3 , 570.6 +/-51.9 km3 , and 1,658 +/- 389 km3, respectively, combined with a multitude of diagnostic glacial tunnel valleys, unconformities, and geologic data, reinforce recent dynamic Pliocene EAIS hypotheses for the Wilkes Land margin.

So there is good reason to investigate the possible effects of such a warming, in dependence of geographical and social economic setting. Many bodies, governmental or not, have organized meetings and issued reports in which the carbon dioxide problem is defined, reviewed, and possible threats assessed. The rate at which such reports are produced still increases. However, while more and more people are getting involved in the 'carbon dioxide business', the number of investigators working on the basic problems grows, in our view, too slowly. Many fundamental questions are still not answered in a satisfactory way, and the carbon dioxide building rests on a few thin pillars. One such fundamental question concerns the change in sea level associated with a climatic warming of a few degrees. A number of processes can be listed that could all lead to changes of the order of tens of centimeters (e. g. thermal expansion, change in mass balance of glaciers and ice sheets). But the picture of the carbon dioxide problem has frequently be made more dramatic by suggesting that the West Antarctic Ice Sheet is unstable, implying a certain probability of a 5 m higher sea-level stand within a few centuries.

In East Antarctica, the Aurora Subglacial Basin is drained by Totten Glacier and is one of the world’s largest and most rapidly-changing ice catchment systems. In recent decades, Totten Glacier has exhibited variability in its flow rate, mass balance, and ice thickness, each led by changes at the ice sheet margin. Totten Glacier dynamics are linked to processes in the Totten Ice Shelf, which buttresses the flow of grounded ice while being subjected to variable ocean forcing from below. Understanding the stability of the Aurora Subglacial Basin in a changing climate requires an understanding of how Totten Ice Shelf responds to changes in its environment. This dissertation investigates ice shelf processes on spatial scales of 1 km to 100 km, that act on sub-annual to decadal time scales. The independent roles of channelized basal melt and large-scale basal melt resulting from a variable supply of oceanic heat content are examined using surface elevation changes measured by airborne laser altimetry, satellite laser altimetry, and a new method of photometry applied to satellite images. A new method of satellite image template matching is also developed to understand ice shelf velocity response to several environmental forcing mechanisms. On the interannual time scale, Totten Ice Shelf is seen accelerating in response to nearby upwelling of warm circumpolar deep water that enhances basal melt rates. On the subannual time scale, Totten Ice Shelf exhibits winter slowdown as buttressing from seasonal landfast sea ice at the ice shelf front slows the flow of the glacier. These findings show that the Totten Glacier catchment is sensitive to changes in its environment, and may be susceptible to changes in the coastal wind stress projected for the 21st century.

On the one hand, the Antarctic Ice Sheet is the largest freshwater reservoir on Earth. On the other hand, a major proportion of the global bottom-water formation takes place in Antarctic shelf regions, forcing the global thermohaline circulation. The main goal of this dissertation is to provide new insights into the dynamics and stability of the EAIS during the Quaternary. Additionally, variations in the activity of bottom-water formation and their causes are investigated. The dissertation is a German contribution to the International Polar Year 2007/ 2008 and was funded by the & lsquo;Deutsche Forschungsgesellschaft & rsquo; (DFG) within the scope of priority program 1158 & lsquo;Antarctic research with comparative studies in Arctic ice regions & rsquo;. During RV Polarstern expedition ANT-XXIII/9, glaciomarine sediments were recovered from the Prydz Bay-Kerguelen region. Prydz Bay is a key region for the study of East EAIS dynamics, as 16% of the EAIS are drained through the Lambert Glacier into the bay. Thereby, the glacier transports sediment into Prydz Bay which is then further distributed by calving icebergs or by current transport. The scientific approach of this dissertation is the reconstruction of past glaciomarine environments to infer on the response of the Lambert Glacier-Amery Ice Shelf system to climate shifts during the Quaternary. To characterize the depositional setting, sedimentological methods are used and statistical analyses are applied. Mineralogical and (bio)geochemical methods provide a means to reconstruct sediment provenances and to provide evidence on changes in the primary production in the surface water column. Age-depth models were constructed based on palaeomagnetic and palaeointensity measurements, diatom stratigraphy and radiocarbon dating. Sea-bed surface sediments in the investigation area show distinct variations in terms of their clay minerals and heavy-mineral assemblages. Considerable differences in the mineralogical composition of surface sediments are determined on the continental shelf. Clay minerals as well as heavy minerals provide useful parameters to differentiate between sediments which originated from erosion of crystalline rocks and sediments originating from Permo-Triassic deposits. Consequently, mineralogical parameters can be used to reconstruct the provenance of current-transported and ice-rafted material. The investigated sediment cores cover the time intervals of the last 1.4 Ma (continental slope) and the last 12.8 cal. ka BP (MacRobertson shelf). The sediment deposits were mainly influenced by glacial and oceanographic processes and further by biological activity (continental shelf), meltwater input and possibly gravitational transport. Sediments from the continental slope document two major deglacial events: the first deglaciation is associated with the mid-Pleistocene warming recognized around the Antarctic. In Prydz Bay, the Lambert Glacier-Amery Ice Shelf retreated far to the south and high biogenic productivity commenced or biogenic remains were better preserved due to increased sedimentation rates. Thereafter, stable glacial conditions continued until 400 - 500 ka BP. Calving of icebergs was restricted to the western part of the Lambert Glacier. The deeper bathymetry in this area allows for floating ice shelf even during times of decreased sea-level. Between 400 - 500 ka BP and the last interglacial (marine isotope stage 5) the glacier was more dynamic. During or shortly after the last interglacial the LAIS retreated again due to sea-level rise of 6 - 9 m. Both deglacial events correlate with a reduction in the thickness of ice masses in the Prince Charles Mountains. It indicates that a disintegration of the Amery Ice Shelf possibly led to increased drainage of ice masses from the Prydz Bay hinterland. A new end-member modelling algorithm was successfully applied on sediments from the MacRobertson shelf used to unmix the sand grain size fractions sorted by current activity and ice transport, respectively. Ice retreat on MacRobertson Shelf commenced 12.8 cal. ka BP and ended around 5.5 cal. ka BP. During the Holocene, strong fluctuations of the bottomwater activity were observed, probably related to variations of sea-ice formation in the Cape Darnley polynya. Increased activity of bottom-water flow was reconstructed at transitions from warm to cool conditions, whereas bottom-water activity receded during the mid- Holocene climate optimum. It can be concluded that the Lambert Glacier-Amery Ice Shelf system was relatively stable in terms of climate variations during the Quaternary. In contrast, bottom-water formation due to polynya activity was very sensitive to changes in atmospheric forcing and should gain more attention in future research.
