Book excerpt: Reading fluency has been identified as a key component of proficient reading. Research has consistently demonstrated significant and substantial correlations between reading fluency and overall reading achievement. Despite the great potential for fluency to have a significant outcome on students’ reading achievement, it continues to be not well understood by teachers, school administrators and policy makers. The chapters in this volume examine reading fluency from a variety of perspectives. The initial chapter sketches the history of fluency as a literacy instruction component. Following chapters examine recent studies and approaches to reading fluency, followed by chapters that explore actual fluency instruction models and the impact of fluency instruction. Assessment of reading fluency is critical for monitoring progress and identifying students in need of intervention. Two articles on assessment, one focused on word recognition and the other on prosody, expand our understanding of fluency measurement. Finally, a study from Turkey explores the relationship of various reading competencies, including fluency, in an integrated model of reading. Our hope for this volume is that it may spark a renewed interest in research into reading fluency and fluency instruction and move toward making fluency instruction an even more integral part of all literacy instruction.

Book excerpt: Abstract: Reading has long been regarded as the gateway to self-directed education. As students progress from the early to middle elementary years, curricula expect that they will transition from learning to read to reading to learn. Too often, however, students are left behind because they struggle to develop reading proficiency before this transition. With the understanding that they require early and intense intervention to ensure later academic success, finding the most effective and efficient methods to foster reading proficiency among struggling readers is critical. This study examined the differential effects of three variations of repeated readings (with traditional whole word drill, with word retell, and with both traditional whole word drill and word retell) on core literacy components among delayed third grade readers. After random assignment to these three conditions, student performance was analyzed on the constructs of oral reading fluency, oral reading accuracy, reading comprehension as measured by word retell and comprehension questions, and intervention efficiency. Findings indicated that there were few significant differences among the three conditions. Results did indicate that students in the traditional whole word drill and word retell condition improved significantly more in oral reading accuracy from initial to repeated reading than did students in the word retell condition. Results and limitations of the study are discussed, and directions for future research are recommended.

Book excerpt: Abstract: This study examined the effects of repeated reading practice on oral reading fluency and comprehension skills of elementary-aged students. Eight fifth-grade students, determined to be reading below grade level, and recognized by the classroom teacher as needing additional reading instruction participated in the study. A multiple baseline across subjects experimental design was used, with an initial baseline period of ten sessions. Participants entered the intervention in pairs according to similar reading levels. During each repeated reading session student pairs orally read, alternating paragraphs, to one another for a practice period of ten minutes. Students used a specified correction procedure when miscues occurred during the practice period. Following practice, each student participated in a one-minute timed trial, which was scored by the researcher for number of words read per minute and number of miscues committed by the reader. A cloze procedure comprehension assessment was done when the student reached the fluency criterion (one hundred eighty words read per minute). The dependent variables in this study were number of words read in one minute, number of miscues committed, and number of comprehension questions answered correctly. Results indicate that students' oral reading fluency improved with practice, miscues decreased with practice, and comprehension skills significantly improved overall. No word recognition skill gains were observed.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this action project was to explore the effect repeated reading strategy has on oral reading fluency and reading comprehension of middle school students. The repeated reading strategy supplemented the reading instruction of middle school students in a parental choice school. The 5-phase study included school and parental approval, student interest interview and teacher questionnaire; the administration of the Qualitative Reading Inventory - 5th edition for pre-test and post-test; repeated reading strategy training and intervention strategy implementation. Students paired together and trained on the intervention process received fluency-comprehension instruction 60 to 90 minutes twice a week. Growth was determined from the Pre-test and Post-test. The findings concluded an overall effect of the repeated reading strategy on fluency and comprehension of middle school students.

Book excerpt: Reading fluency, the ability to read with speed, accuracy, and proper expression, is essential to improving reading comprehension. The law now insists that reading achievement increase every year based on standardized test. Students with disabilities are included in these efforts despite the added amount of struggles they may face in order to achieve in reading. Repeated reading is one evidence-based intervention that may be used. Six Minute Solution uses repeated reading to increase student oral reading fluency. A single case study design was used to measure a student's oral reading fluency progress when using Six Minute Solution. The student is in third grade and diagnosed with a specific learning disability in reading fluency. The results show that the intervention had a positive effect on the student's words read correct per minute score.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to see if implementing the Read Naturally program would impact the oral reading fluency rates of at-risk third-grade students. There were four students who participated in the study. Two were girls and two were boys who were eight or nine years old. Prior to beginning the Read Naturally program, the students were identified after taking the DORF probe and BRI. When using the Read Naturally program, data was gathered in a pre and posttest format. The students would do "cold" readings of the passages. Next students would repeat the readings at least three times and then complete "hot" readings. Both readings were timed for one minute ans the students recorded their scores on a graph. The DORF probe and BRI were given once again to the students after the eight-week period of using the Read Naturally program. All students showed significant gains in their oral fluency rates at the end of the study.
