Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study appears at a time when a decisive turn is due in the research on personality development. After many years of stagna tion and misguided research in this field, this book should lead to a thorough revision and a better understanding of current views on the factors which have an influence on personality. Let us consider the unsatisfactory aspects of the recent develop ments in personality studies. At the beginning of this century, the revolutionary insight gained ground that personality is susceptible to various influences, in particular to those resulting from human interaction. This insight swept away many of the old scholastic concepts and gained special importance in the fields of pedagogics and psychotherapy. How ever, in the wake of every great discovery we find inherent dangers. For years, various claims and creeds on the malleability of personality have been put forward as if they were proven facts. Lay literature, too, was permeated with wrong and distorted information on factors which might endanger child development.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The Power of Order: Understanding the Link between Birth Order and Personality" is a fascinating exploration of how the order in which we are born shapes our personalities, relationships, and life experiences. The author, Stephen Watathi, draws on decades of research and personal experience to examine the effects of birth order on individuals and families. The book begins by outlining the five main birth order categories: firstborns, middle-borns, lastborns, only children, and the twin. Stephen then delves into the unique personality traits and characteristics associated with each category, using real-life examples and case studies to illustrate his points. Throughout the book, Stephen highlights the ways in which birth order can influence our relationships with our parents, siblings, and partners, as well as our career choices, communication styles, and life goals. He also explores the impact of cultural and environmental factors on birth order and personality, and discusses how birth order can interact with other factors, such as gender and family size, to shape who we are. "The Power of Order" is a highly engaging and informative read, written in a clear and accessible style. Whether you are a firstborn curious about why you always felt responsible for your siblings, a middle-born struggling to find your place in the family, or an only child wondering why you crave attention, this book offers valuable insights into the role that birth order plays in our lives.

Book excerpt: We study the effect of birth order on personality traits among men using population data on enlistment records and occupations for Sweden. We find that earlier born men are more emotionally stable, persistent, socially outgoing, willing to assume responsibility, and able to take initiative than later-borns. In addition, we find that birth order affects occupational sorting; first-born children are more likely to be managers, while later-born children are more likely to be self-employed. We also find that earlier born children are more likely to be in occupations that require leadership ability, social ability and the Big Five personality traits. Finally, we find a significant role of sex composition within the family. Later-born boys suffer an additional penalty the larger the share of boys among the older siblings. When we investigate possible mechanisms, we find that the negative effects of birth order are driven by post-natal environmental factors. We also find evidence of lower parental human capital investments in later-born children.
