Book excerpt: This descriptive, quantitative study examined the effects of participation in a 1-year Early Start Preschool Program for 4-year-olds in a state that requires annual testing at the end of select grades. This study has evaluated the effectiveness of the program, this research examined whether it has positively affected the results of end-of-year tests. The predictor variable for this study was participation in the Early Start preschool program. For this study, the only 2 groups assessed were children who participated in Early Start and children who did not participate in the program. The criterion variables or dependent variables in this study included the state end-of-year tests for the 3rd grade in English and math from 2003 to 2005. Each group of student scores was compared using a 2 tailed t-test, and the measure of effect determined using Cohen's d statistic. The results of this study determined that this program does not positively affect achievement in English and mathematics through 3rd grade. These findings could be used to modify the program to better meet the needs of children and justifies advocacy for children through social justice by providing conclusive evidence that an academically-focused preschool program does not meet the academic needs of young children and their families.

Book excerpt: Although some research-based educational practices have shown promise, many fail to be implemented at a scale that affects more than a small proportion of children. Further, research on interventions for young children includes mixed results, with most documenting "fadeout" of effects after several years, but some showing lasting effects. In this study, the authors evaluated the long-term impacts of a model for scaling up early interventions, in this case a successful early mathematics curriculum, testing to see whether the originally-sustained impacts persisted up to 7 years beyond baseline. The original evaluation of TRIAD (Technology-enhanced, Research-based, Instruction, Assessment, and professional Development) employed a cluster randomized trial (CRT) design to test the effectiveness of the TRIAD scale-up approach, using the Building Blocksʼ early mathematics curriculum (BB) in preschool. In this evaluation, 42 schools were randomly assigned to three groups. One of the groups was a business-as-usual control (CTRL). In preschool, the other two conditions were identical and entailed TRIAD scale-up (intensive training, coaching focused on both BB curriculum and linked assessment and online professional development). After preschool, one of the treatment conditions included follow-through professional development through 1st grade, including knowledge of the intervention and ways to build upon that knowledge using learning trajectories (TRIAD Follow-Through or TRIAD-FT) while the other condition implemented business-as-usual control (TRIAD Non-follow-through or TRIAD-NFT). Students in the two treatment conditions significantly outperformed their peers in the control condition through 1st grade. The primary purpose of the current investigation was to examine the long-term effects of the early mathematics curriculum, but the secondary aim was to explore whether the TRIAD scale-up approach itself, which included aligned professional development for kindergarten and 1st grade teachers, also enhanced the effects of the pre-K curriculum beyond 1st grade. Research questions were as follows: (1) What are the differences in the average math achievement of the three original study groups (TRIAD-NFT, TRIAD-FT, and CTRL) in 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade; (2) Do the differences in the 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade math achievement of the original study groups vary by the socio-economic and racial/ethnic backgrounds of the students in the groups; (3) What are the differences in the 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade math achievement of the subset of children who remained in the group to which their original school was randomly assigned throughout the intervention period (pre-K through 1st grade); and (4) Do the differences in the in the 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade math achievement of the subset of children who remained in the group to which their original school was randomly assigned throughout the intervention period (pre-K through 1st grade) vary by the students' socio-economic status and racial/ethnic backgrounds? Figure 1 presents results addressing the first research question that pertain to the differences between the three groups at the end of pre-K through 5th grade. Figures 2a and 2b inform the second research question and show the effects of the FT and NFT conditions separately for African-American, Hispanic, other minority, and white students. Figures 3a and 3b show the FT and NFT effect estimates separately for the low and high SES subgroups formed based on students' eligibility for FRPL. Figures 4, 5a, 5b, 6a, and 6b inform the 3rd and 4th research questions and show parallel results for the stayers (students who stayed in the original conditions between pre-K and 1st grade). Impacts at the end of 5th grade were statistically significant and considerably larger than impacts in 3rd and 4th grade for both conditions and all subgroups. Tables and figures are appended.

Book excerpt: This study investigates the longitudinal effects of preschool experience, Parent Education Follow Through (PEFTP) experience, and sex on academic achievement. A total of 293 children forming three cohorts from schools in two communities were included. Cohort 1 comprised grade 3 to 5 children; Cohort 2 comprised grade 1 to 4 children; and Cohort 3 comprised grade 2 to 5 children. Total reading, total language, and total mathematics scale scores on the Comprehensive Test of Basic Skills (CTBS) were collected for each child and used as the dependent variable in all statistical anlaysis. A repeated measure design using multivariate analysis of variance was used to analyze the data. The results suggest that by the third grade all PEFTP children perform equally well on achievement measures regardless of preschool experience. No substantial sex effect was discovered. Achievement of children in this program was comparable to that of the CTBS norm group in the areas of reading, language, and mathematics. (Author/MP)

Book excerpt: While there remains little doubt that the "founding" preschool programs in America--the High/Scope Perry Program, the Chicago Child-Parent Centers, and the Abecedarian Project--had a positive academic and social impact on the students they served, such claims are difficult to substantiate for students being served in the Virginia Preschool Initiative Program. This study was designed to investigate the educational impact of the state-funded preschool program on the academic achievement of at-risk students who attended school from 1999-2002. These students' third- and fifth-grade Standards of Learning tests, in the subject areas of mathematics and reading, were compared using T-tests and ANOVA calculations to determine if there existed any statistically significant differences in academic achievement. Results from the investigation did not find any significant differences in achievement between those students who attended preschool and those who did not. In fact, reading scores were higher for those female students who did not attend preschool.

Book excerpt: The purpose of the study was to determine whether differences exist in performance on high-stakes accountability tests in third grade and high school among seniors who attended preschool and those who did not attend preschool. Test performance was measured using 2006-2007 third grade Mississippi Curriculum Test (MCT) reading and math scaled scores, English II and Algebra I Subject Area Testing Program-2 (SATP2) scores, and ACT composite scores. The study further analyzed the difference among groups based on retention rates, gender, and socioeconomic status. The study also examined the beliefs of parents of preschool attendees about the impact of preschool on their children's preparation for formal school success using a parent questionnaire. A total of 185 parent questionnaires were accompanied by signed parental consents and could be included in the study. Frequencies and percentages were provided for each of the independent variables. Analysis of the data found no statistically significant differences among students' academic performance with regards to preschool type. However, statistically different results were found when considering a student's Algebra I SATP2 scores with regard to retention history. In addition, statistically significant differences were detected on ACT scores when considering socioeconomic status and public school preschool. The study found no differences in reports of parental beliefs about the impact of preschool on reading and math readiness. The study further revealed that parents' beliefs about the impact of preschool on reading and math achievement were moderately positively correlated to subsequent performances MCT reading/English I SATP2 and MCT math/Algebra I SATP2 tests. Most parents agree that their child attending preschool was very effective in preparing them for success in kindergarten through twelfth grades and even future employment. However, this study revealed that as children got older parents reported less involvement with homework assistance, and volunteering at their child's school. Parents were neutral or in agreement up through grade five, after which many disagreed to volunteering at their child's school, receiving helpful information from school, and helping with homework. --Page ii.
