Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to determine an optimal intensity (percent of five-repetition maximum weight) to perform an activation exercise, to elicit the most effective response of postactivation potentiation (PAP) through the completion of an explosive exercise. A window of opportunity exists after completing a potentiating exercise that, due to a high level of activation and the dissipation of fatigue, should acutely elicit power gains. Fifteen division 1 varsity soccer players (11 female and 4 male) with mean height 169.93 ± 10.95, mean body weight 144.93 ± 27.03lbs, and mean ages of 19.3 ± 0.72 years, completed 2 sessions during the testing protocol; using the first for acquiring baseline data, and the second for experimental testing. Sessions were separated by seven days. During the first session, athletes were assessed for baseline vertical jump heights, and 5 RM back squat. During the second session, subjects performed 5 repetitions at 80%, 90%, and 100% of their 5 RM for 5 repetitions, each followed by a countermovement vertical jump 7.5 minutes thereafter. Results were obtained using the SPSS data processing software and were analyzed through a three way repeated measures ANOVA. Early in the twentieth century, Fenn (1924, 1923) showed that the total energy liberated during a contraction (heat + work) was increased when the muscle was allowed to shorten and perform work. The result implied that chemical reactions during contractions were load-dependent. The observation underlying the “Fenn effect” was taken to a greater extent when Hill (1938) published a pivotal study showing in details the relation between heat production and the amount of muscle shortening, providing investigators with the force-velocity relation for skeletal muscles. Subsequently, two papers paved the way for the current paradigm in the field of muscle contraction. Huxley and Niedergerke (1954), and Huxley and Hanson (1954) showed that the width of the A-bands did not change during muscle stretch or activation. Contraction, previously believed to be caused by shortening of muscle filaments, was associated with sliding of the thick and thin filaments. These studies were followed by the classic paper by Huxley (1957), in which he conceptualized for the first time the cross-bridge theory; filament sliding was driven by the cyclical interactions of myosin heads (cross-bridges) with actin. The original cross-bridge theory has been revised over the years but the basic features have remained mostly intact. It now influences studies performed with molecular motors responsible for tasks as diverse as muscle contraction, cell division and vesicle transport.

Research suggests that when a high-load, low-velocity conditioning stimulus (CS) is performed just prior to a biomechanically similar plyometric movement, the performance of the plyometric movement is acutely enhanced in a phenomenon called post-activation potentiation (PAP). Despite the positive influence PAP can have on power production, research has only investigated the existence of PAP when comparing biomechanically similar movements. PURPOSE: To determine if an upper body CS can elicit a PAP response in a lower body plyometric exercise and to investigate the optimal time course for PAP between an upper body CS and lower body plyometric exercise. METHODS: Eight (8) resistance-trained males (23.5 ± 2.7 y; 177.5 ± 3.2 cm; 81.7 ± 5.8 kg) participated in the study. Participants performed one set of three countermovement jumps (CMJs) before (pre-CS) and three sets of three CMJs after (post-CS) an upper body CS. Muscle activation in the vastus lateralis, gastrocnemius, and gluteus maximus were compared between pre-CS and the three post-CS conditions using surface electromyography. Changes in jump height, work, power output, and rate of force development (RFD) during the early and late stages of the CMJ take-off between the conditions were analyzed using a force plate.
