Book excerpt: Regardless of the arguments from scientists supporting genetically modified foods, there is still a negative consumer attitude toward GM foods in many countries, including Brazil, as well as concerns about the risks related to health and the environment. As this is a recent subject, there is little empirical and scientific research on the effects of genetic modification and its possible benefits on consumer perceptions. In this study, a laboratory experiment with Brazilian consumers is presented in which two factors are manipulated: genetic modification (present x absent) and benefits to the product (environment, low price and increased shelf life). Results indicated that: (i) the presence of the genetic modification in the product led to negative evaluations of the corporate image and the behavioral intentions toward such product; (ii) the benefits tested were not enough to attenuate the negative perception; (iii) consumers with high involvement with GM food presented more favorable behavioral intentions toward the product (i.e., a significant positive correlation was found); and (iv) demographic variables, such as gender and age, also influenced the attitudes.

This study analyzes consumers' likelihood of who would strongly agree and somewhat agree to the usefulness of GM foods within the random utility discrete choice framework. According to this study, public support toward biotechnology is significant and they should accept the usefulness of biotechnology for a better future.

Book excerpt: This dissertation examines the psychological underpinning of the consumer aversion to genetically modified foods. Although a substantial body of scientific evidence supports the notion that genetically modified organisms (GMOs) are safe to consume, many consumers continue to reject these products on principle. Drawing on research that distinguishes how people reason about natural and manmade objects, I find that consumers are more accepting of GMOs when marketing cues suggest they are manmade. Evidence from these studies suggests that the moral opposition towards genetically modified foods impedes the perception of their benefits. Critically, this moral opposition is reduced when the product is positioned as being manmade. Specifically, if consumers view the GMO as manmade and if they understand why it was created, moral opposition towards the product diminishes, and the GMOs perceived benefits increase, which subsequently increases purchase intentions for the product. As a whole, this work offers novel theoretical insights into consumers negative response to GM foods. Although prior research suggests that consumers dislike GMOs because these products are unnatural, the present work demonstrates that preference for a GMO is actually contingent upon the belief that the object ought to be natural. When cues suggest that the product is manmade to begin with, consumers are more accepting of genetically modified foods. This research also represents the first evidence that moral opposition impedes the perception of a GM foods benefits. Finally, this work lends managerial implications in light of the recent GMO food labelling debate.

Book excerpt: The National Bioengineered Food Disclosure Standard (PL 114-216) will require nearly all foods sold in the U.S. to bear a statement disclosing whether they contain genetically modified (GM) material. Past studies suggest the presence of such a statement could have profound effects on consumers; however, research comparing consumer response towards different GM-disclosure statements is scarce. PL 114-216 states that GM foods shall not be considered more or less safe than their non-bioengineered counterparts, nevertheless it would benefit regulators and food manufacturers to be aware of the possible effects such disclosures might have on consumers. In a nationwide survey, multiple disclosure statements with varying degrees of public familiarity were compared to evaluate consumer perceptions and attitudes associated with each statement. Average consumer knowledge level of GM processes was also measured. The statements were then paired with actual food items to determine whether specific product categories influenced consumer responses. A select few of these statements and foods were included in a taste panel, allowing researches to analyze if disclosure statements affected a consumer’s sensorial experience. Results suggested that consumers were most favorable towards statements indicating the absence of GM-material, however they also responded less negatively towards new disclosure statements that do not have negative connotations. Additionally, consumers may react differently depending on the food accompanying a particular disclosure, although the taste panel data found no evidence that statements affected actual eating experience. Importantly, data from both surveys and taste panel suggested a disclosure statement may affect consumer willingness to buy a product.

All rights not granted by the above license are retained by the author. Abstract: Objective: There is concern about the extent to which consumers will accept genetically modified (GM) foods in China. Existing studies are mostly inconsistent and sometimes confusing. Although China produced and consumed the biggest amount of GM crops and other derived products, there were only limited studies about Chinese public acceptance for GM foods. This review was aimed to explore the public acceptance for GM food in China and reasons for acceptance or against for GM food. Methods: Literature were retrieved from Google Scholar, Pubmed and CNKI using key words of "genetically modified food" ( OR "GM food" OR "GMO Food" OR "GM foods") combined with "acceptance" (OR "attitude" OR "willingness to buy" ). Consumers' knowledge and understanding about GM food, attitudes and acceptance for GM food as well as factors or reasons associated with their attitudes or acceptance were synthesized. Result: Of 1000 literature retrieved from the specified data sources, 20 were eligible to be included in this study. Generally, knowledge and understanding of GM food was limited among Chinese consumers. However, acceptance for GM food were generally positive among the Chinese consumers, around 60%-80% according to the studies included in this review. Factors associated with acceptance for GM food included price of GM food, respondents' demographics, government attitudes and media coverage. Conclusion: The Chinese government should better communicate the risk and benefits associated GM food to improve acceptance of GM food. Communication should target subgroups of consumers to improve their knowledge and perceived benefits of GM food.
