Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to determine the effectiveness of using nursery rhymes as a focal point of instruction in my kindergarten classroom, with the development of phonemic awareness as the overarching goal. This study utilized a quasi-experimental on group pretest/posttest design. For a period of nine weeks, I implemented one nursery rhyme per week with a group of nine kindergarten subjects during the fall semester of the 2008-2009 school year. Portions of the Linn County Kindergarten Assessment and the Dynamic Indicators of Basic Early Literacy Skills (DIBELS) were given as pretests to establish baseline scores and posttests to determine the outcome. An anecdotal journal was also used to monitor the progress of subjects during the research study. In a large group, Subjects were involved in daily instruction during the nine weeks, focusing on one nursery rhyme per week. A shared, interactive reading format was used for implementation. Explicit plans were developed and followed to maximize the educational potential of the nursery rhymes, and weekly monitoring occurred through use of varying forms of the DIBELS assessment. Results showed an increase in the phonemic awareness test scores of the involved subjects. The result may very well be due to the inclusion of nursery rhymes as a focal point of instruction

Book excerpt: Students are expected to become emergent readers by the end of kindergarten, yet some students begin kindergarten lacking the emergent literacy skills needed to become readers. As a teacher, I need to know what I can do in the classroom to help these children gain the skills they need while still teaching the required curriculum. During this study, students were frequently exposed to nursery rhymes for six weeks in the classroom. Instruction was delivered on speech to text matching, rhyming, initial sounds, syllables, and segmenting through shared reading, small group, and individual instruction. Students participated in pre/post assessments that measured their knowledge of phonological awareness, alphabetic knowledge, and concepts of print skills. Each area of the pre/post assessment showed an increase in skill with an average growth of 15% for alphabetic knowledge, 21% for phonological awareness, and 28% for concepts of print. This study has shown that at the beginning of the year, six weeks of frequent use of nursery rhymes in the kindergarten classroom can contribute to helping students increase their emergent reading skills, despite their prior knowledge and exposure to literacy.
