Book excerpt: This dissertation investigates the dimensions of Asian American racial group consciousness and evaluates the effects of consciousness on Asian American political behavior. Political scientists find a strong connection between racial group consciousness and political participation. Black racial group consciousness has been shown to shape political orientations and increase participation among African Americans. In contrast, the effects of group consciousness are weaker and less consistent among Asian Americans and Latinos. This raises questions about the generalizability of existing measures of racial group consciousness currently used in studies of minority political behavior. In this dissertation, I construct an alternative measure of racial group consciousness specifically tailored to reflect the unique racialization experiences of Asian Americans. As a group, Asian Americans are racially triangulated between whites and Blacks. They are socially constructed as "model minorities," a group whose individual life chances are not influenced by race and allows them to successfully integrate into the U.S., but at the same time, they are consistently lumped together racially, as perpetual foreigners with very little distinction, even among individuals. Due to this unique position in the American racial hierarchy, it is important to develop a distinctive measure for Asian American group consciousness. Using a multi-method approach, I provide evidence demonstrating that Asian Americans exhibit strong perceptions of a shared experience related to perceived problems of racial discrimination, racial lumping (the act of disregarding differences in ethnicities of people who share the same racial background), and racial group image, and that these perceptions have political consequences. The analysis in this dissertation is based on 50 focus group interviews and responses from 815 surveys conducted with Asian American adults living in the Southern California area. Based on the analysis, I find that Asian American racial group consciousness is strong at the individual level and increases civic and political participation in organizations, voting in elections, and increasing preferences for Asian American candidates. The results of this dissertation expands knowledge of an understudied group, equipping different individuals and organizations with valuable information on how to launch more effective mobilization campaigns to encourage Asian Americans to join their ranks and support their causes.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between perceived racism and psychological well-being among Southeast Asian American college students. In specific, the relationships between the frequency of racism experiences and how much the racism experiences bothered the participants, and demographic factors including gender, generational status, and college grade level were investigated. A total of 201 self-identified Southeast Asian Americans were included in the final analysis. These subjects completed two instruments, the Daily Life Experience subscale that measured perceived racism and the Depression-Happiness Scale that measured both positive and negative cognitions and affect. Subjects also provided responses about their generational status, gender, and college level status. The instrument data were analyzed using correlation analysis and multiple linear regressions. Regression analyses revealed that perceived racism and the demographic factors differentially predicted psychological well-being. By examining variations in participants' experiences of racism and how much they attribute the racism experience as bothersome, this study highlights individual differences within this group and provides evidence that racism is a complex process for Southeast Asian Americans. These results are discussed in detail herein. Implications of the findings along with the limitations of the study are presented. Recommendations of future research are also described.

Although it has garnered increased attention in the research and clinical community due to its pervasive impact in racial minority individuals, empirical research on this topic has been limited. At the time of this study, no existing scale captures the key dimensions of internalized racism of Asian Americans. This study attempted to fill this gap by developing a self-report instrument that identified the key dimensions of this psychological construct. Seven hundred and fourteen Asian Americans participated in this study, and exploratory and confirmatory factor analyses were conducted to investigate the factor structure of the scale. Results indicated that the Internalized Racism Scale for Asian Americans (IRSAA) has five factors, which are Endorsement of Negative Stereotypes, Sense of Inferiority, Denial or Minimization of Racism, Emasculation of Asian American Men, and Within-group Discrimination. This dissertation also examines and discusses the evidence of convergent, discriminant, and incremental validity for the IRSAA subscales.

Book excerpt: ABSTRACT: Prior research links reported experiences of racist and sexist events with psychological symptomatology of racial/ethnic minority persons and women, respectively (e.g., Bowen-Reid & Harrell, 2002; Fischer & Holz, 2007; Moradi & Risco, 2006; Moradi & Subich, 2002). No published study to date, however, has examined the simultaneous links of perceived racist and sexist events with mental health for Asian American women. The present study examined a model that tested direct and indirect relations among perceived discrimination, sense of personal control, psychological distress, self-esteem, acculturation, and enculturation in a sample of Asian American women. Path analysis of the model indicated that (a) perceived racist events were related to greater psychological distress, indirectly through sense of personal control, (b) perceived sexist events were related directly to greater psychological distress, (c) acculturation to U.S. culture was related to less psychological distress and greater self-esteem, indirectly through sense of personal control and (d) enculturation to culture of origin was related to less psychological distress and greater self-esteem, indirectly through sense of personal control.

Book excerpt: Guided by the intersectionality theory and objectification theory, the author explored whether body surveillance (BSU), body shame (BSH), and collective self-esteem (CSE) may serve as possible mediators and moderators for the association between gendered racial microaggression (GRMA) and East Asian American (EAA) women’s body esteem (BES) and life satisfaction (SWLS). A total of 173 EAA women completed an online survey. This study used the PROCESS computational tool (Hayes, 2013) to explore the mediation and moderation hypotheses. The mediation analysis results indicated that BSU, BSH, and CSE-PR (private), and CSE-MB (membership) mediated the associations between GRMA and outcome variables (e.g., BES and SWLS). The results from simple effects of moderation analysis revealed that for EAA women with lower collective self-esteem (CSE-ID), the association between GRMA and BES was significantly negative. In addition, among EAA women with a higher level of private collective self-esteem (CSE-PR), the association between GRMA and SWLS was significantly negative.

When these factors are not optimal in a community, it does not mean they are intractable: such inequities can be mitigated by social policies that can shape health in powerful ways.
