Book excerpt: Two experiments were conducted on the Ohio State University Golf Club practice green and one on a USGA green at the Ohio Turfgrass Foundation Research and Education Facility. The first project on the OSU Golf Club putting green was designed to study the interaction of methiozolin, nitrogen rate and fertilizing frequency on creeping bentgrass recovery and annual bluegrass suppression/control in the spring with fall only methiozolin treatments and fall/spring methiozolin treatments. The second project consisted of three methiozolin rates and four rates to determine the best combination of spring methiozolin rate and spring nitrogen application strategies that shows best control over annual bluegrass while benefiting creeping bentgrass recovery and safety. The third project at the OSU Research and Education Facility was to study the effects of five nitrogen rates on the lateral growth/recovery and quality of creeping bentgrass with/without methiozolin treatments.

Annual bluegrass (Poa annua L.) is a golf course turfgrass species, often in a mixed stand with creeping bentgrass (Agrostis stolonifera). Many golf courses in the transition zone and north can be susceptible to ice or freeze injury to golf course putting greens. Annual bluegrass is more susceptible to ice cover damage than creeping bentgrass. In this thesis we aimed to evaluate mechanisms which could alleviate ice cover stress to annual bluegrass through exogeneous applications of chemicals prior to ice cover through fatty acid analysis of annual bluegrass crown tissue. We also intend to examine the role of the plant growth hormone, ethylene, in annual bluegrass and its effects on ice cover survival.Applications of fungicides or plant growth regulators to golf course putting greens are common turfgrass management tools. Trinexapac-ethyl, Civitas, paclobutrazol, and propiconazole are commonly applied to golf course putting greens. Applications of trinexapac-ethyl decreased unsaturated fatty acids while increasing saturated fatty acids ratios in crown tissue of annual bluegrass while Civitas increased unsaturated fatty acids and decreased saturated fatty acids. This was correlated to ice cover recovery with Civitas increasing recovery and trinexapac ethyl decreasing recovery after ice cover. The gaseous hormone ethylene was then examined to determine its role in changes to fatty acid ratios of annual bluegrass under ice cover. Applications of effective ethylene chemicals decreased unsaturated fatty acid ratios while increasing saturated fatty acid ratios.

Book excerpt: Bispyribac-sodium has shown potential for selective annual and roughstalk bluegrass control in cool-season turfgrasses but further research is needed for successful integration in to turf management programs. The objectives of this research were to investigate the influence of management practices, environment, and spray adjuvants on efficacy and metabolism of bispyribac-sodium in turfgrass. In field experiments, sequential bispyribac-sodium applications controlled annual bluegrass 93% but trinexapac-ethyl did not affect efficacy. Tank mixing trinexapac-ethyl with bispyribac-sodium provided similar annual bluegrass control to the herbicide alone. In field experiments, withholding nitrogen increased annual bluegrass and creeping bentgrass sensitivity to bispyribac-sodium while grasses fertilized biweekly generally had darker color. Weekly nitrogen treatments increased 14C-bispyribac-sodium metabolism in both grasses compared to the unfertilized. In field experiments, discoloration of creeping bentgrass putting greens was greatest from applications of 37 g/ha every ten days compared to 74, 148, or 298 g/ha applied less frequently. Chelated iron effectively masked discoloration of creeping bentgrass putting greens from bispyribac-sodium while trinexapac-ethyl inconsistently masked these effects. In field experiments, bispyribac-sodium regimes totaling 148, 222, and 296 g/ha controlled annual bluegrass 81, 83, and 91%, respectively, over two years. Pooled over herbicide rates, bispyribac-sodium applied two, three, and six times controlled annual bluegrass 78, 83, and 94%, respectively. Bispyribac-sodium and sulfosulfuron provided substantial reductions (80 to 100%) in roughstalk bluegrass cover in creeping bentgrass fairways by late July but regrowth was detected by October in three years suggesting herbicide applications did not control vegetative stems or crowns. In growth chamber experiments, annual bluegrass chlorosis and clipping reductions from bispyribac-sodium were exacerbated by increased temperature from 10 to 30°C. Conversely, creeping bentgrass was most sensitive to bispyribac-sodium at 10°C but chlorosis and clipping reductions were less substantial at 20 and 30°. Spray adjuvants increased 14C-bispyribac-sodium foliar absorption by two to threefold in laboratory experiments and improved annual bluegrass control in field experiments by 25 to 50% from treatments with no adjuvants. In metabolism experiments, half life of 14C-bispyribac-sodium in annual bluegrass, creeping bentgrass, and perennial ryegrass was estimated at greater than seven days, one day, and two days, respectively.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A major concern regarding creeping bentgrass (Agrostis stolonifera) putting greens is annual bluegrass (Poa annua) invasion. With methyl bromide fumigation now being highly restricted, alternatives must be investigated to curtail weed seed soil infestations. Currently, dazomet is the only fumigant labeled for annual bluegrass control in turfgrass systems. Therefore, research questions related to dazomet efficacy come to the forefront such as how soil texture and depth of seed bank affect efficacy as well as which application rate is most effective within a soil. A study was designed to garner data as to the depth of soil removal needed to reduce annual bluegrass seedling emergence in a newly renovated putting green. Research was conducted in different seasons, summer and fall, respectively; to evaluate seedling emergence across five soil removal depths in four sampling sites. Cores were collected from four golf courses in southeastern Michigan, subdivided into different soil removal depths, potted in sterile soil media, and established in a growth chamber. Results suggest that excavating soil to a depth of 2.54 cm, or more prudently, 3.81-cm depth could minimize annual bluegrass competition in a creeping bentgrass putting green, e.g., annual bluegrass emergence was observed to be greatest in the upper soil depths (1.27 to 3.81cm) in both seasons with minimal emergence (

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Methiozolin is a new herbicide from South Korea currently under development for pre- (PRE) and postemergence (POST) control of annual bluegrass in bentgrass and most other cool- and warm-season turfgrasses. Greenhouse studies were conducted in 2012 at the University of California, Riverside, CA, and Auburn University, Auburn, AL, to evaluate the relative tolerance of nine creeping bentgrass (CRBG) cultivars, velvet bentgrass (VBG) and colonial bentgrass (COBG) to methiozolin at 0, 0.6, 1.1, 2.2, 4.5 and 9.0 kg ai ha [superscript -1]. Methiozolin was applied 7 weeks after seeding followed by a second application at 12 weeks. Methiozolin rates that produced 25% injury (TI[subscript 25] ) and 50% clipping dry weight reduction relative to an untreated control for each species or cultivar (GR50 ) were calculated using four parameter logistic regression. Results indicated that TI[subscript 25] rates at 56 DAIT were the most accurate in describing relative tolerance among BG species; as a result CRBG was determined to be more tolerant to methiozolin than VBG or COBG. Respective TI25 rates were 1.1, 0.2, and 0.3 kg ai ha[superscript -1] for CRBG, VBG and COBG. Furthermore, VBG and COBG are unlikely to tolerate sequential applications necessary to control annual bluegrass with methiozolin. Evidence of soil residual activity was documented for methiozolin; therefore, herbicide rates that caused TI[subrscript 25] and GR50 decreased with increasing number of applications. Creeping bentgrass 'Penn A-4' was the most tolerant of methiozolin application with TI25 of 4.5 and 2.5 kg ai ha[superscript -1] at 28 and 56 DAIT, respectively. All CRBG cultivars tested tolerated methiozolin at the recommended sequential application rate (0.5 kg ai ha [superscript -1] ).

This complex dilemma is related to numerous and often interrelated factors such as: extreme air and soil temperatures, drought or excessively wet soils, dense thatch or organic mats, mechanical and other physical stresses, improper management practices, the misuse of chemicals, and other physical stresses. The goal of this useful manual--complete with helpful color photographs--is to give golf course superintendents practical tools to better understand the many stress factors that contribute to the creeping bentgrass decline complex. It will help you pinpoint problems, and implement cultural and chemical solutions to maintain the integrity of your course.

This book was released on 2019 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Winterkill of turfgrasses on golf course putting greens is highly unpredictable and problematic for superintendents in northern climates, specifically in the Northeastern United States. Harsh winters in the 2013-14 and 2014-15 seasons left many superintendents facing the difficult challenge of trying to recover from turf loss at a time coinciding with the opening of golf courses for play. Creeping bentgrass (Agrostis stolonifera L.; CBG) putting greens are commonly infested with annual bluegrass (Poa annua L.; ABG). Annual bluegrass is known to be an aggressive weed and a species that is difficult to eradicate. Over time, ABG can become the dominant and preferred species to maintain on putting greens. This dominance of ABG in cold climates can become problematic due to the susceptibility of the species to temperature extremes when compared to CBG. In the event of winterkill, superintendents may discover turf loss in sporadic voids or possibly the loss of entire ABG putting greens after snow melt that occurs. If winterkill occurs, re-establishment of the putting surface via CBG seed or sod may be required. Seeding is often the preferred method of recovery, but temperatures in the early spring generally are considered suboptimal for germination. Limited information is available on the influence of suboptimal temperatures on bentgrass germination. The evaluation of CBG cultivar performance (e.g., germination) at low temperatures would be valuable to superintendents seeding in early spring. Additionally, information on effective methods of cultivation, nitrogen (N) fertilization, and seeding rates could optimize establishment of CBG and reduce losses of golf course revenue due to course closure. The objectives of this study were to: 1) determine the impact of suboptimal temperatures on bentgrass cultivar germination; and 2) elucidate the influence of cultivation methods, starter fertilizer rate, and seeding rate on the establishment of CBG. Differences in germination among cultivars were observed when seed was incubated at 10C. Samples of Pure Select, Greentime, Crystal BlueLinks, and Penn A-4 had the highest germination at 10C when incubated in the presence or absence of light. Mackenzie, PLS, Tyee, and Villa exhibited the lowest germination at 10C. Germinability at low temperatures should be considered as a factor in cultivar selection for early spring seeding at suboptimal temperatures.Field experiments indicated that seeding at a rate of 73 kg seed ha-1 and fertilizing at a rate of 73 kg N ha-1 increases seedling vigor and percent ground cover compared to lower seeding and N rates. Slicing was an effective method of cultivation. Putting greens cultivated by slicing alone, slicing + 13-mm hollow tine aeration, and slicing + 6-mm hollow tine aeration generally showed similar seedling vigor and percent cover, indicating that superintendents could use slicing alone to save money and time on hollow tine aeration. These cultivation practices, combined with careful cultivar selection, can optimize early spring seeding and may result in quicker recovery where winterkill occurs.

Book excerpt: Sufficiency Level of Available Nutrient (SLAN) and Minimum Levels for Sustainable Nutrition (MLSN) are two of the philosophies used for soil test interpretation in turfgrass management. A study was conducted from 2019 - 2020 to compare the effects of SLAN and MLSN nutrient recommendations on a 'Penn A-4' creeping bentgrass green (Agrostis palustris Huds.) and on a mix stand of annual bluegrass (Poa annua) and 'Penncross' creeping bentgrass green grown on United States Golf Association specification rootzone. This study was a split plot with three factors and three replications. The whole plot included three levels: MLSN, SLAN and nitrogen (N) fertilized control treatment. The subplot included two levels: trafficked and non-trafficked. Soil samples were collected in spring and autumn to a depth of 15 cm. Turfgrass color, quality, and NDVI were measured monthly. In 2019, nutrient recommendation rate for MLSN was 73 kg N, 37 kg P and 60 kg K ha-1; SLAN was 73 kg N, 56 kg P and 222 kg K ha-1; and N-fertilized control was 73.2 kg N ha-1. There were no differences among treatments for NDVI, color and quality but the SLAN philosophy had the highest soil P and K levels in autumn of 2019. In 2020, nutrient recommendation rate for MLSN was 73 kg N, 38 kg P and 67 kg K ha-1; SLAN was 73 kg N, 31 kg P and 216 kg K ha-1; and N-fertilized control was 73 kg N ha-1. Both philosophies exhibited higher quality and healthier color compared to N-fertilized control. SLAN philosophy had the highest soil P level but there were no differences in soil K levels between the two philosophies in autumn of 2020.

Book excerpt: Plant growth regulators (PGRs) such as gibberellic acid (GA3), abscisic acid (ABA) and trinexapac-ethyl (TE) can be applied to turfgrasses to promote winter hardiness. Lethal temperature of 50% mortality measurements revealed that application of these PGRs had no effect on the acclimation status of creeping bentgrass and annual bluegrass for the months of January, February and March. Fall PGR application decreased acclimation status for annual bluegrass, whereas ABA and GA3 applications increased acclimation status for creeping bentgrass in April. Treatment with exogeneous ABA increased endogenous ABA levels in annual bluegrass. A simulated warming event in a growth chamber in late winter resulted in a loss of acclimation status for both grasses compared to a control. GA3 increased annual bluegrass photosynthesis and TE decreased creeping bentgrass photosynthesis during the warming event. PGRs are beneficial for maintaining the acclimation status of creeping bentgrass, while reducing the acclimation status of annual bluegrass.
