Book excerpt: The incidence of stroke is increasing and is expected to continue to increase with the aging population, escalating rates of obesity and physical inactivity, and the rising prevalence of heart failure. Stroke is a leading cause of long-term disability, which includes approximately half of survivors that experience cognitive impairment. It is accepted that aerobic exercise can improve physical health in both healthy and stroke populations. Evidence also suggests aerobic exercise may positively affect cognitive function among healthy adults; however, whether there are similar beneficial effects among stroke survivors remains unclear. The purpose of this thesis was to examine whether a single session of moderate intensity aerobic exercise acutely improves cognitive function, specifically executive function, in comparison to a rest control among people with chronic stroke. Our first objective was to determine whether aerobic exercise alters cortical processing, as measured by P300 amplitude and latency during a modified Eriksen Flanker task. The second objective was to investigate whether aerobic exercise influences behavioral measures of response time and accuracy during a modified Eriksen Flanker task. Finally, the third objective was to examine the time course of effects up to 40 minutes after exercise cessation. In our sample, participants had shorter P300 latency and larger P300 amplitude 20 to 40 minutes after exercise cessation in comparison to rest. There were no significant behavioural changes. These findings suggest that aerobic exercise may enhance, or at least maintain cognitive processing speed and attention 20 to 40 minutes after exercise cessation, which otherwise deteriorated in the rest condition. Although results should be viewed cautiously due to a small sample size, these findings have potential implications for stroke rehabilitation. Our results suggest that aerobic exercise may be able to improve attentional focus during subsequent rehabilitation exercises for up to 40 minutes or more. Future research should examine whether the effects of various exercise doses and whether paired exercise and rehabilitation improves clinical outcomes.

Cognitive health is one area in particular that has shown considerable benefits from exercise. Acute exercise paradigms have more recently been used and found to provide immediate enhancements to higher-level cognition, such as executive function and working memory. The goal of the current study was to understand how different intensities of aerobic exercise cycling influence post working memory performance and to see if the effects differ depending on whether working memory is measured immediately following exercise or after a 15 minute delay. A total of 120 participants were randomly assigned to one of four exercise intensity conditions, low, moderate, high or a resting control. Participants’ working memory was assessed at their first baseline session. During the second session, participants cycled or rested for 30 minutes and working memory was assessed immediately following and 15 minutes following the exercise or rest period. Results showed that working memory scores increased over time regardless of the condition. Further analysis also showed that working memory scores were higher following a 15 minute delay for both the low and moderate exercise conditions and there was a trend towards higher working memory scores immediately following exercise for the high intensity condition. Taken together, these results highlight the complex nature of the relationship between acute exercise and cognition.

Fourteen recreationally active college students (M=9, F=5) aged 18-35 participated in this study, which consisted of six experimental days, with three simulated altitude conditions: sea level (SL), simulated moderate altitude (MA; 15.4% FIO2, ~2400 m) or simulated high altitude (HA; 12.8% FIO2, ~3900 m); and two exercise conditions: rest or moderate intensity cycling exercise at 60% altitude-specific peak power output, in a randomized-order, crossover design. Thus, the primary purpose of this study was to examine the effects of low-intensity cycling on cognitive function in college-aged students, indexed by response accuracy, reaction time, P3 amplitude, and P3 latency. Twenty-seven (Mage = 22.9 ± 3.0 years old) college-aged individuals were counterbalanced into low-intensity exercise (EX) and seated control (SC) conditions. During each condition, participants completed a 10-minute resting baseline period, 20 minutes of either sustained cycling or seated rest, and a 20-minute recovery period. Primary outcomes were assessed at 10-minute intervals (5 blocks total) throughout each condition via a modified oddball task. Across time blocks, both conditions exhibited faster reaction times on frequent trials but reduced accuracy to rare trials, suggesting a speed-accuracy tradeoff. There were no differences between conditions in P3 latency whereas a significant reduction in P3 amplitude was observed during the 20-minute exercise period compared to the control condition. Taken together, the results suggest that exercise at lower doses may have minimal influence on behavioral outcomes of cognitive performance but may impact more basic measures of brain function. Information gathered from this study may aid in the development of appropriate exercise prescriptions for populations looking to specifically target cognitive function deficits.

Book excerpt: Single bouts of aerobic exercise appear to elicit improvements in cognition and affect among older adults, which are dependent on exercise dose (intensity, duration). Social engagement, not typically considered in exercise prescription but often included in exercise delivery, may also influence these outcomes. This study examined the effects of social exercise and solo exercise versus a control on affect and cognition among older adult women. Thirty healthy older adult women were recruited to this study. In a repeated-measures design, participants each completed three sessions: 1) social exercise: moderate intensity treadmill walking with concurrent conversation with another participant; 2) solo exercise: moderate intensity treadmill walking alone; and 3) active control seated and listening to an informative podcast. Order of conditions was counterbalanced. Executive function was assessed immediately before and 10 minutes after each intervention using a modified Eriksen Flanker task. Response time (RT), accuracy, and inverse efficiency score (IES) were calculated from Flanker data. Affect was assessed using the Physical Activity Affect Scale (PAAS) immediately before and after each intervention and at 3-hour intervals throughout the day of intervention and the following day. PAAS subfactors of positive affect, negative affect, tranquility, and fatigue were used in analysis. To better examine variability in RT response to exercise, individual participant response times across conditions and time were examined and used to group participants in an exploratory analysis. Four groupings emerged: 1) Consistent Responders; 2) Social Responders; 3) Solo Responders; 4) Non-Responders. Differences in personality, activity levels, conversation characteristics, sleep, and energy expenditure were examined between groups. Results show higher accuracy in exercise conditions than control, but with no change in RT over time or conditions. There was significantly lower IES in the social condition compared to control, but no difference between exercise conditions. Responder groups varied by personality, exercise history, and social engagement characteristics such that consistent and social responders tended to be more extroverted, agreeable, and conscientious than other groups. Social conversation quality and quantity was also higher among these groups, while contribution to the conversation was lowest. Subjective physical activity levels were highest in the non-responder group. Acute improvements in affect (denoted by higher positive affect and reduced negative affect) occurred following social exercise, but not solo exercise or control. This reduction in negative affect remained until 6h-post social exercise, however positive affect decreased over this time. Overall, results provide only weak support for enhanced executive functions following exercise or social exercise. Book excerpt: "The purpose of this study was to examine whether acute aerobic exercise of moderate intensity has an effect on cognitive performance on a long-term memory task; and secondly, if that effect is influenced by the order in which the exercise is introduced relative to the memory task. Sixty-four college students composed the sample, which was divided into four conditions: exercise-rest, rest-exercise, exercise-exercise, and rest-rest. Recall was assessed using the Standard New York University (NYU) Paragraphs for immediate and delayed recall. Participants were read two separate paragraphs. Following a 35-minute delay, participants were then asked to recount as much of the paragraphs as they could, as close to verbatim as possible. The first word in each condition denotes the participant's task prior to paragraph exposure, and the second denotes their task during the 35-minute delay. ANOVA examining differences in delayed recall performance between the two groups completing one bout of exercise (exercise-rest and rest-exercise) and the rest-rest group was significant, F(2,45) = 4.37, p = 0.018.
