Book excerpt: This current research presents the finite-element results of a study investigati ng the effect of multi-presence of design vehicles on three- and four-lane concr ete slab highway bridges. Typical one-span, simply supported, two spans, multil ane (three and four lanes), reinforced concrete slab bridges are considered. The finite-element method is used to investigate the effect of span length and slab width, and to calculate the wheel load distribution on the bridge slab at the c ritical section. Live load reduction factors are proposed by the American Association for State H ighway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO) specifications, due to the improbab ility of maximum coincident loading. These live-load reduction factors are impo sed to account for the probability of having all lanes loaded at the same time a nd at locations along the bridge deck producing the maximum bending moment in an element of a bridge superstructure. AASHTO specifies that results obtained fro m analyses of three- and four-lane bridge decks where all lanes are loaded simul taneously are to be multiplied by proposed reduction factors. This research will investigate the significance of the reduction factors propose d by AASHTO. Design trucks loads are first placed transversally in all lanes as a reference case. Design loads in two out of three, three out of four, and two out of four lanes are then investigated. The wheel load distribution on the bri dge slab at the critical section for the fully loaded and reduced conditions are calculated and compared. The results are assessed with AASHTO procedures, and a correlation between the reduced conditions and the AASHTO 10% and 25% reductio n factors is made. This research will assist bridge engineers in quantifying the adjustment factors used in analyzing and designing multilane concrete slab bridges.

Book excerpt: A research program of field and laboratory tests to study the seismic response of reinforced concrete double-deck freeway structures has been concluded at the University of California, Berkeley. The program had three phases of testing. This report describes the research findings of the third phase of the program, which focused on the design criteria for beam-column joints in new ductile double-deck freeways. Two one-third scale test specimens representing the lower-level beam-column joint in a double-deck bridge structure were built and tested in the laboratory. The test specimens were designed according to current design criteria. The two test specimens differed in the strength of the members framing into the joints. The scope of the tests was to determine the response of the joints when subjected to unidirectional and bidirectional load cycles and compare the response to the different levels of maximum joint shear stress demands.

Book excerpt: The live load distribution factor (DF) equations provided by AASHTO-LRFD for the decked precast/prestressed concrete (DPPC) girder bridge system do not differentiate between a single or multilane loaded condition. This practice results in a single lane load rating penalty for DPPC girder bridges. The objective of this project is to determine DF equations which accurately predict the distribution factor of the DPPC girder bridge system when it is only subjected to single lane loading. Eight DPPC girder bridges were instrumented. Each bridge was loaded with a single load vehicle to simulate the single lane loaded condition. The experimental data was used to calibrate 3D FE models and 2D grillage models of the DPPC girder bridge system. The calibrated models were used to conduct a parametric study of the DPPC girder bridge system subjected to a single lane loaded condition. Two sets of new equations that describe the single lane loaded distribution factor for both shear and moment forces of these bridges are proposed and compared with AASHTOLRFD DF equations.

Book excerpt: Over the past few years the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), Forest Products Laboratory (FPL), and the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) have supported several research programs. This paper is a result of a study sponsored by FPL, with the objective of determining how truckloads are distributed to the deck panels of a longitudinal glued-laminated timber deck bridge. Currently, the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO) LRFD (load and resistance factor design) Bridge Design Specification provides live load distribution provisions for longitudinal glued-laminated timber deck-panel bridges. The AASHTO LRFD live load distribution provisions for longitudinal glued-laminated timber deck bridges were based on the assumption that the bridge deck behaves as one slab and ignores the discontinuity of the bridge deck panels. This study investigated this assumption by using analytical models that validated field test data from several in-service bridges and data from a full-scale laboratory test bridge. The analytical models accounted for the effects of the interface between the deck panels as well as the effects of the transverse stiffener beams on the distribution of the live- load. The analytical live load distribution results above were compared with both the AASHTO LRFD and AASHTO Standard Specifications.

Book excerpt: The primary objective of this project was to determine the effect of bridge width on deck cracking in bridges. Other parameters, such as bridge skew, girder spacing and type, abutment type, pier type, and number of bridge spans, were also studied. To achieve the above objectives, one bridge was selected for live-load and long-term testing. The data obtained from both field tests were used to calibrate a three-dimensional (3D) finite element model (FEM). Three different types of loading -- llive loading, thermal loading, and shrinkage loading -- were applied. The predicted crack pattern from the FEM was compared to the crack pattern from bridge inspection results. A parametric study was conducted using the calibrated FEM. The general conclusions/recommendations are as follows: -- Longitudinal and diagonal cracking in the deck near the abutment on an integral abutment bridge is due to the temperature differences between the abutment and the deck. Although not likely to induce cracking, shrinkage of the deck concrete may further exacerbate cracks developed from thermal effects. -- Based upon a limited review of bridges in the Iowa DOT inventory, it appears that, regardless of bridge width, longitudinal and diagonal cracks are prevalent in integral abutment bridges but not in bridges with stub abutments. -- The parametric study results show that bridge width and skew have minimal effect on the strain in the deck bridge resulting from restrained thermal expansion. -- Pier type, girder type, girder spacing, and number of spans also appear to have no influence on the level of restrained thermal expansion strain in the deck near the abutment.
