Book excerpt: Comprehension is a vital requirement for every student as he or she progresses through school, and a student's motivation to read can directly affect comprehension skills. Many strategies are used to increase reading comprehension across grade levels. At a suburban middle school in the Midwest, 67 students in three sixth-grade reading classes participated in a study to determine if the use of literature circles would increase reading comprehension as well as student motivation to read. Students were taught how to operate and participate in literature circle discussions with various readings. They were then divided into groups, and each group was given a different novel to read and discuss within literature circles. Comprehension was assessed by studying student journal response entries while motivation was assessed by comparing survey results. Using the aforementioned assessments, a slight gain in comprehension was recorded, but results varied for the use of literature circles affecting motivation to read. The literature suggested that literature circles are used to motivate students to read, anehance learning, and increase reading level. This study was conducted in a fifth grade classroom. Four students, two boys and two girls, exhibiting a lack of motivation toward reading participated in this study. All students were English Language Learners (ELL), three of them were of Latino descent and one was Filipino. Data was collected on the four participants through various means including observations, journal entries, surveys, AR quiz scores, STAR reading test scores, fluency results, reading comprehension test results, and a final reflection. This study was performed during a three-month period. The participants read four books during this time and met daily to discuss the literature. Participants were assessed using two different reading assessments before and after the study. In addition, English Language Development levels were assessed in listening, speaking, and reading. Participants were placed into literature groups reflecting instructional reading levels and English Language Development levels. Reader response journals and researcher observations offered additional information about the thinking process of the participants. A participant questionnaire highlighted the perceptions of the participants as readers as well as offered ideas for improving literature circle groupings. This literature circle curriculum includes three book club reading strategies (text coding, choice and read-alouds) with the intent to increase reading comprehension and to increase student connectedness to the world, themselves, and other texts. Details are included as to how literature circles can be woven into content areas, other than a Language Arts class, while successfully maintaining curriculum standards. This literature circle curriculum was implemented in a Midwest suburban middle school. There was no specific data collected other than anecdotal responses from students and other teachers. Overwhelmingly, students’ responses suggest that text coding with sticky notes is a meaningful reading comprehension strategy. Book excerpt: Research question: How does learning and demonstrating literature circle roles (Summarizer, Connector, Questioner, Word Wizard, and Illustrator) develop students' ability to summarize as a reading comprehension strategy? Sub questions: (1) Will developing students' ability to summarize, increase their ability to comprehend what they read? (2) How effective will Literature Circles be in building students' enjoyment of reading? Context: The intervention took place in a fourth grade self-contained classroom at Sunflower Elementary. The class consists of 5 female and 7 male students with varied abilities in reading comprehension. This research focused on 6 students: two performing below average in reading comprehension, two who are performing at and average level, and two who are performing above average in reading comprehension. The intervention took place over a period of 6 weeks. The purpose of this intervention was to determine whether students learning and demonstrating literature circle roles would develop students' ability to summarize, and by building students' ability to summarize also raise their level of reading comprehension. Another objective of this study was to determine whether or not participating in literature groups would build students' enjoyment of reading. Instructional Approach and Data Collection. Summarizing was explicitly taught and modeled for the students during the pre-intervention phase, and students continued to write short story summaries throughout the intervention. Students then took a preliminary Reading Attitudinal Survey and were split into literature circle groups based on their first or second choice of three books. Students participated within literature circles by completing the jobs of: Summarizer, Connector, Questioner, Word Wizard and Illustrator. Literature groups lasted for five weeks; the last week consisted of students presenting their books to the class through skits of scenes from their books. During the sixth week students took a post Reading Attitudinal Survey as well as a survey to convey how they felt about literature groups and writing summaries. Students also completed weekly reading comprehension tests, which were a part of the A Beka Book Reading program that our school has adopted to determine their growth in reading comprehension. Observational data was taken throughout the intervention to determine fluctuations in students' attitude toward reading and how successful they were in their jobs during their literature circle groups. Findings and Conclusions: The study concluded that learning and demonstrating literature circle roles or jobs may improve students' ability to summarize as a reading comprehension strategy. The study also suggests that learning to be more proficient at summarizing may cause students reading comprehension to improve. Furthermore, this study suggests that participating in literature circle groups contributes to an increase in students' enjoyment and enthusiasm of reading. Grade Level: Fourth Grade. Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of literature circles on the reading achievement of college reading students using a mixed method approach. A literature circle is defined in this study as students who form a group, read a novel, and meet on a regular basis to discuss what they have read. The researcher-developed intervention included three activities: collaborative oral re-tell, short written response to a prompt, and open discussion. The study employed an experimental design in order to examine the effectiveness of the intervention (literature circles); in addition, the sociocultural context of the college reading classes (and students) is described in detail. Grounded theory was employed to analyze reading attitude, reading motivation, response to participation in a literature circle, and textual engagement. Thirty-eight college students in required reading courses participated in the five-week study. Students were randomly assigned to either the treatment (participation in literature circle) or control (independent reading) condition. Students were able to choose from four pre-selected high-interest young adult novels. At the conclusion of the series of literature circle meetings (or upon completion of reading the novel independently, for control group participants), comprehension was measured using three measures: an oral re-tell of the novel, a twenty question researcher-developed open-ended book-specific assessment, and a twenty question assessment on a two-part high school level passage from the Qualitative Reading Inventory (Leslie & Caldwell, 2011). Textual engagement was measured by coding and counting responses to a semi-structured interview. Multivariate analysis of variance (MANOVA) revealed a significant main effect for group assignment, meaning that—when all four measures were combined into a linear function—the students assigned to literature circles outperformed the control group students. Given the significance of the overall test, the univariate main effects were examined. Significant univariate main effects were obtained for the researcher developed test and textual engagement. Qualitative analysis revealed that literature circles improve reading comprehension, depth of textual engagement, and provides an opportunity for discourse, collaboration, and social interaction for its participants. These findings suggest that literature circles lead to both improved comprehension and deeper textual engagement for college reading students.
