Book excerpt: This study presents a comparison of two instructional approaches, 6 + 1 Traits Writing and Interactive Editing, in a seventh grade social science class over a two week period. The comparison was conducted in order to measure students' achievement in reading comprehension and quality of writing. Participating students in this study were selected using a table of random numbers and assigned to either the 6 +1 Traits Writing group or the Interactive Editing group. The study used a pretest to establish baseline achievement scores using a sample reading passage and comprehension questions from the district adopted curriculum. Students were also asked to write a summary and scored using the California Standardized Test (CST) released writing rubric. Instruction was given to group A using the 6 + 1 Traits Writing approach while group B received instruction using the Interactive Editing approach. A posttest was subsequently administered at the end of each instructional treatment using the same reading passage, comprehension questions, and writing assignment. Two independent writing judges scored students' writing using the CST rubric. Results indicated improvement in students' reading comprehension and writing for both treatment groups. However, the Interactive Editing group showed greater achievement in reading comprehension and quality of writing compared to the 6 +1 Traits Writing group.

Book excerpt: In my mathematics teaching experiences, I have found students encountering difficulties in successfully remembering and demonstrating all of the major concepts they have learned during the school year. Whether or not the students actually learn and remember the content is a problem numerous teachers experience. As a result, I decided to implement writing into a lower-level seventh grade math classroom to determine if writing would affect student learning. The study was implemented with sixteen lower-level seventh grade math students during the first ten weeks of the 2008-2009 school year at Northwest Junior High in the Iowa City Community School District. Pre-surveys and post-surveys were given to students to determine their attitudes toward mathematics and writing. A pretest and posttest was also administered to assess the effects writing ad on students' growth and achievement over the en week study. Students used their writing skills to explain their reasoning behind their answers. Students also wrote in a journal an average of two times per week. Results from the study showed a minimal increase in the number of students having a positive attitude towards math along with a minimal increase in student achievement. These results may be due to implementation of writing in the mathematics curriculum.

Book excerpt: This Research Topic is the second edition of Fluency and reading comprehension in typical readers and dyslexics readers: Volume I This Second Edition Research Topic is focused on the characterization of the reading-writing difficulties and their comorbidities and in the analysis of evidence-based recommendations for early interventions and treatment of these difficulties within the fields of neuropsychology, speech-language pathology, and educational psychology. Reading involves decoding and comprehension components, and to become efficient it requires a large number of cognitive and linguistic processes. Among those, decoding failures can have different origins, such as deficits in phonological and/or visual processing. In addition, a child with reading difficulties might also have problems in the acquisition of writing and handwriting performance. This is an important point to be discussed, as reading and writing both suffer interference from vocabulary acquisition, linguistic skills, memory skills, reading and writing practices, and literacy methods. These processes become important only when the professional needs to deal with students presenting learning difficulties. Difficulty in using the knowledge of conversion rules between grapheme-phoneme to word reading construction or phoneme-grapheme for writing can be identified in schoolchildren with dyslexia, dysgraphia, and dysortography, being a specific learning disorder with a neurological etiology. In addition, there is established evidence of a speech-language processing basis, students with specific learning disabilities can show a range of cognitive difficulties (e.g., rapid naming, executive functioning, working memory). These presented difficulties interfere in their learning process, impairing their learning development.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bringing together a wide range of research on reading disabilities, this comprehensive Handbook extends current discussion and thinking beyond a narrowly defined psychometric perspective. Emphasizing that learning to read proficiently is a long-term developmental process involving many interventions of various kinds, all keyed to individual developmental needs, it addresses traditional questions (What is the nature or causes of reading disabilities? How are reading disabilities assessed? How should reading disabilities be remediated? To what extent is remediation possible?) but from multiple or alternative perspectives. Taking incursions into the broader research literature represented by linguistic and anthropological paradigms, as well as psychological and educational research, the volume is on the front line in exploring the relation of reading disability to learning and language, to poverty and prejudice, and to instruction and schooling. The editors and authors are distinguished scholars with extensive research experience and publication records and numerous honors and awards from professional organizations representing the range of disciplines in the field of reading disabilities. Throughout, their contributions are contextualized within the framework of educators struggling to develop concrete instructional practices that meet the learning needs of the lowest achieving readers.
