Book excerpt: Abstract: Stratification research has demonstrated that family income, parental education and family structure are consistent predictors of academic success. Some researchers have suggested that participating in high school interscholastic sports also leads to better academic performance. Unfortunately, empirical evidence of this relationship is weak. I use data from the National Education Longitudinal Study of 1988 to provide a rigorous test of the effect of participating in high school interscholastic sports on grades and standardized test scores net of relevant controls. Equally important, I explore the mechanisms through which sports participation affects academic success including peer affiliation, social-psychological well-being, and parental support. Analyses show that participating in high school interscholastic sports is related to gains in standardized test scores and math and English grades between eighth and twelfth grades. The positive effects of participating in interscholastic sports are largely a function of differences between athletes and non-athletes in peer group orientation, social capital, self-esteem, locus of control and work ethic. Further tests indicate that participating in interscholastic sports improves grades more than participating in academic clubs, student council, music, cheerleading, drama, journalism clubs, hobby clubs or vocational clubs. Results suggest the importance of parental involvement and support in school activities. I conclude by discussing the implications of my findings for adolescent well-being and educational success.

Book excerpt: The recent NIKE advertisement titled "If You Let Me Play," claims many benefits for girls who play sports. In contrast, there exists a hypothesis that today's society overemphasizes the role of sports to the detriment of some students, in particular inner-city minority males. This paper examines the effects of participating in high school athletics on students' educational and labor market success in order to test these two theories. I make three contributions to the literature. First, I allow the athletics effect to vary across specific team and individual sports. Second, I use instrumental variables estimation to control for self-selection into sports. Finally, I use measures of peer involvement in sports, similar to other work on neighborhood effects, to instrument each individual student's athlete status. Using nationally representative samples from High School and Beyond and the National Education Longitudinal Study of 1988, OLS results show that athletics contributes positively to educational and labor market success for all students except minority females. Controlling for the endogeneity of athletic participation, however, I find significant positive effects only for white students with respect to educational outcomes. This suggests that some of the seemingly beneficial effect of sports reflects underlying differences between athletes and non-athletes.

Book excerpt: The in-season and out-of-season effects of sports participation on academic performance vary depending on the level of play from middle school through collegiate athletics. The purpose of this study was to determine if a significant difference exists between in-season academic performance and out-of-season academic performance of student-athletes in a low-income high school. The number of students participating in high school athletics has continued to rise for 33 consecutive years as increases in the commercialization of high school athletics affect the athletic identities and academic achievement of student-athletes. Little research has been done to examine the effects of in- and out-of-season play on academic performance at the secondary level. This study examined the in- and out-of-season effects on the academic performance of 130 student-athletes in a low-income high school using a repeated measures design. The average semester GPAs of the student-athletes in- and out-of-season were compared using paired samples t-test procedures. The findings yielded positive and statistically significant differences in academic achievement in-season as compared to out-of-season at p = 0.038. Suggestions for future research include examining the effects of athletic seasons on academic achievement in individual sports and across ethnic groups, longitudinal studies, and qualitative studies to investigate the perspectives of student-athletes.

Book excerpt: This online longitudinal multi-wave study investigated impacts of sports spectatorship on students of two college football powerhouses — The Ohio State University and the University of Alabama. Specifically, the study looked at changes of self-esteem, mood, university affiliation and university football team affiliation with data collection occurring before and after watching football games. The study found some significant effects on self-esteem, mood, university affiliation and university football team affiliation at the university levels for individual waves but not overall. During this study, there was an on-campus incident at one university that may have affected these results.

Regular sport participation has beneficial effects on physical, psychological and social wellbeing. It has positive effects on prevention and treatment of non-communicable diseases, physical appearance, enhance self-concept and external prestige, lower rates of suicidal ideation, reduce use of fossil fuels, and substantially increase life expectancy. The advent and excessive use of technology, academic workload coupled with the incidence of COVID-19, students become content with engaging more in sedentary activities. This chapter examined the psychological factors predicting sport participation among Japanese and foreign students in Sendai, Japan. The common choice of recreational sports are sedentary activities with a high level of performance in terms of frequency, intensity, duration and long period of participation. Psychological factors of self-confidence, value, task familiarity, perceived success significantly predicts sport participation among university students. Therefore, there is need for increased awareness on benefit of sport participation within the university. Improved reconciliation between academic and physical education programs, and development of attractive recreational sports considering the psychological process that leads to participation. To allay concerns during pandemic, self-organized, non-contact and outdoor sports should be encouraged with adequate preventive measures in place.
