Book excerpt: The process of heat treatment is the method by which metals are heated and cooled in a series of specific operations that never allow the metal to reach the molten state. The purpose of the heat treatment is to cause desire changes in the metallurgical structure and thus in the properties of metal parts. The aim of this research is to study the influence of heat treatment and natural aging mechanism on the microstructure and mechanical properties of aluminum alloy 6061. The aluminum alloy 6061 sample heat treated using T4 method which is heat treated at 550°C, 575°C and 600°C and then naturally aged at ambient environment for 3 hours. After heat treated process, the effects were investigated in terms of microstructure using metallurgical analysis and mechanical properties by tensile tests and hardness test. Tensile tests show that the yield stress and UTS have high value when heat treated at 600°C where 103.28693 MPa and 195.246895 MPa meanwhile the Young modulus heat treated at 550°C have high value; 84417.95106 MPa. For heat treatment specimens, the high VHN is specimen's heat treated at 600°C which have value 85.7 and the lower VHN value is specimen's heat treated at 550°C with value 57.5. The heat treatment process result soft aluminum alloy 6061. Lastly for microstructure observation, different microstructure appear within different heat treatment temperature. From the data and result that already determined, it achieved the objectives and scope of this research.

Book excerpt: A710 is an high strength low alloy steel whose strength is a result of both a fine grained microstructure and a dispersion of copper precipitates. For these reasons, the tensile and impact properties of an A710 plate depend as much on the thermo-mechanical history of each plate as on the chemistry of each heat. Since plates shipped from steel suppliers are frequently heat treated under different conditions, it is difficult to attribute property differences to chemistry variations rather than to heat treatment variations or vice versa. Heat to heat property differences must be determined for a specific, known heat treatment. This report describes the variability in the mechanical properties of four plates (representing four heats of steel) that have received known, and carefully controlled, heat treatments at the National Bureau of Standards. The sensitivity of these properties to heat treatment variations within each heat of steel is also reported here. Optical and electron metallographic techniques were used to determine as-received and heat treated microstructures. Scanning electron fractography was used to ascertain the fracture mechanism in the tensile and impact tests. This report also contains two appendices in which splitting fracture and microchemistry observations in A710 are discussed. Keywords: Grain size; Age hardening; Ultra fine niobium carbon nitride; Tables(data); Charts; Photographs; Microchemistry. (Author).

Book excerpt: A final report assessing the effects of variations in heat treatment on the mechanical properties and microstructure of ASTM A710 grade A class 3 steel is given. The goal of this project was to evaluate the sensitivity of the mechanical properties of A710, an age hardening steel, to heat treatment variations that may occur in the production of thick plate. Tensile and impact tests were conducted on the material heat treated under the various conditions. Microstructure evaluations using optical and electron metallographic methods were conducted. Small angle neutron scattering examinations were also performed on selected specimens in order to evaluate the precipitate distribution. Results indicate that austenitization and aging time has little effect on the resultant mechanical properties. However, the mechanical properties were found to be sensitive to aging temperature. Impact results at 0 F indicate that aging at 900 F is detrimental in that the fracture surfaces of the broken impacts exhibited cleavage. Furthermore, the results suggest that welding or similar heating operations will not seriously degrade this material's properties.

For CPM-M4 tool steel, the changes in microstructure and mechanical properties were observed based off of variations in temperature. Five heat treatments with constant exposure time and variable austenitizing and tempering temperatures were performed on samples of the CPM-M4. During heat treatment, tool steels undergo microstructural transformations where carbides made up of primary alloying elements are created and grown while the surrounding matrix of material undergoes phase transformations. Using SEM, EBSD, and ImageJ analysis software, the phase fractions of the final microstructure for each treatment was quantified and compared. Changes in mechanical properties were assessed by macro- hardness and nanoindentation. Based on the data, a maximum hardness was achieved for samples with an austenization temperature of 2200°F and a tempering temperature of 925°F. This highest hardness did not correspond to the highest fraction of the hardened carbide and martensite phases. This is due to interactions between both the phases present in the matrix as well as the size and distribution of the carbides.

Topology optimization, microstructural texture control, and the use of lattices could be created through AM to increase performance of systems. Currently research focuses on solution aging of printed 17-4 PH, while other heat treatments are not as heavily studied. This study identifies different heat treatments applied to additively manufactured 17-4 precipitation hardened (PH) and the effects on mechanical properties. This study used quasi-static tension, quasi-static compression, and Charpy V-notch testing to analyze the effects of heat treatment as well as the effectiveness of additive manufacturing compared to traditional machining for wrought materials. Data during testing was taken with digital image correlation to identify changes in local strain. The effectiveness of heat treatment was demonstrated in this study and can be used to estimate performance on additively produced 17-4 PH.

Book excerpt: Variable thickness plate investment castings of AISI H13 hot work die steel were pour and characterized in the as-cast and heat treated conditions. The characterization included light microscopy and mechanical testing. Wrought samples of standard and premium grade H13 steel were heat treated and characterized similarly for comparison. Microstructural differences were observed in as-cast samples poured to different section thicknesses. Dendrite cell size and carbide morphology constituted the most prominent microstructural differences observed. After a full heat treatment, however, Microstructural differences between the wrought material and cast materials were slight regardless of section thickness. The mechanical properties of the cast and heat treated material proved similar to the properties of the standard heat treated wrought material. A thermal fatigue testing unit was designed and built to correlate the heat checking susceptibility of AISI H13 steel to its processing and consequent microstructural condition. Surface hardness decreased significantly with thermal cycling, and heat checking was noticed in as few as 50 cycles. Thermal softening and thermal fatigue susceptibility were quantified and discussed relative to the microstructural conditions created by processing and heat treatment. It was found that the premium grade wrought H13 steel provided the best overall resistance to heat checking; however, the heat-treat cast and as-cast H13 tool steel (made from standard grade wrought H13 tool steel) provided comparable resistance to heat checking in terms Of area fraction of heat checking and maximum crack length.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ductile materials such as aluminum alloys have been the primary material of choice for structural components of aircraft such as fuselage, wing, etc. because of their light weight, ease of forming and resistance to failure under shock loads. There are two primary types of aluminum alloys used in aircraft: cast alloys and wrought alloys. Majority of the traditionally used cast aluminum alloys in aircraft manufacturing are the Al-Cu or Al-Si-Mg alloys including A214, A355, A356 and E 357. Aluminum castings are typically produced using green sand, permanent mold casting or die casting. However, aluminum castings are susceptible to porosity defects. Porosity is a microscopic void or hole found in a casting. To eliminate micro-porosity defects in aluminum castings, multiple heat treatments can be used. In particular hot isostatic pressing (HIP) can be used to effectively to remove sub-surface porosity in complex shaped castings. HIPing process includes the use of elevated temperature and the application of a hydrostatic pressure via pressurized gas. Previous work has demonstrated that widely used aluminum casting alloys such as A356, A204, A206 have shown considerable improvement in mechanical properties when HIPed. However, no study has been done on aluminum casting alloy E357. The E357 alloy combines excellent casting characteristics with improved strength compared to the widely use A356 alloy. Silicon combines with the magnesium in these alloys to form Mg2Si which strengthens the alloys during final precipitation heat treatments. To understand the effects of hot isostatic pressing on the performance of casting Aluminum E 357 alloy tensile testing and charpy impact testing were carried out on cast E357 test specimens which were divided into three groups- HIPed and T6 heat treated specimens,Homogenized and T6 heat treated specimens and Non HIPed and T6 heat treated specimens. Samples were evaluated to understand the effects of processing cycles on the resultant mechanical properties and microstructure with respect to microporosity and size of silicon particles. This study was conducted as an effort to characterize impact of Hot Isostaic Pressing on aluminum E357 casting for Sikorsky Aircraft Corporation. It was observed that, HIPing process helped in reducing %porosity by 37.83% and increased size of silicon particle has by 18.08%. Significant increase in %elongation was also observed in HIPed samples as compared to non HIPed samples. Overall HIPing process and subsequent heat treatment helps to improve % elongation significantly although the improvements in ultimate tensile strength and yield strength is not significant. Microstructure analysis reveals that HIPing results in a noticeable reduction in % porosity which tends to increase mechanical properties and reduce property variation.
