Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In a dual-earner marriage, why is a wife’ s paid employment much less likely to be defined as "breadwinning" than her husband’s? This book uses data from a study of 153 dual-earner couples to examine the allocation of responsibility for breadwinning and the social construction of gender in their marriages. The author carefully distinguishes breadwinning from paid employment and uses the insights of gender construction theory to illuminate that distinction. Gender construction theory sees gender as a system of social relations that is continually and actively created in the social interactions of daily life. Using both quantitative and qualitative analyses, this book demonstrates that despite the prevalence of dual-earner marriages, breadwinning is still widely used as a boundary that creates gender by distinguishing the meaning of men's employment from that of women's. The author argues that though the extent to which breadwinning is used as a gender boundary is strongly influenced by adult experiences and circumstances and by the material conditions of couples' lives, it is not determined by these factors. Rather, the meanings attached to husbands’ and wives’ employment are actively constructed through a process of negotiation that is characterized by both contention and cooperation. Moreover, this is a highly dynamic process; the breadwinning boundary is renegotiated and reconstructed in response to disagreement, to changing circumstances, and to shifts in other, related gender boundaries. Through its detailed analysis of breadwinning and its development of gender boundaries as a theoretical concept, this book provides new insight into gender relations and makes a contribution to gender construction theory. At the same time, it is engagingly written and provides moving glimpses of the real-life dilemmas of dual-earner couples.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dual-career marriage, in which wife and husband each pursue a professional career, offers a window into the changing landscape of gender roles and relations. In the span of a single generation, the family in which both parents work outside the home has gone from being the exception to being the rule. This book examines the multi-layered implications this impressive, rapid change holds for the fabric of family and marital life and for the course of men's and women's work lives. Intensive interviews with dual-career wives and husbands provide rich information about four major issues: * In what ways and for whom do dual-career marriages replicate the traditional gender arrangements of one-career marriages, and in what ways do dual-career marriages represent a revolution in gender roles? * How do the two careers of spouses develop side by side, and in what ways do dual-career spouses help or hinder each other's careers? * How do work and family combine in dual-career marriages? * How are relationships between spouses and between parents and children affected by dual careers? This book presents a subtle, textured portrait of contemporary dual-career marriage -- examining the complicated interplay of expectations, behaviors, and emotions within and between dual-career spouses. The author observes that the centrality of family or work to each spouse's sense of self powerfully affects how the couple negotiates the challenges posed by dual-career marriage, including feelings of competition between spouses, questions of geographic moves, and division of domestic tasks. The study illuminates many issues of clinical relevance, such as the common hazard of dual-career spouses having little time for marital intimacy once the rigorous demands of careers and children are met, and the complicated intrapersonal as well as interpersonal tensions generated by gender roles in transition.

Book excerpt: This purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between gender roles, a wife's feelings regarding her employment and marital satisfaction in dual-earner couples. As part of the data analysis, a multiple regression analysis was preformed to determine what impact the level of femininity and level of masculinity had on the marital satisfaction of each group of participants; women who want to work, women who feel they must work, men who perceive their wives want to work and men who perceive their wives feel they must work. Significant results were only seen in the final group (men who perceive their wives feel they must work) where levels of femininity and masculinity accounted for 80% of the original variance. Analyses were also conducted to examine between group differences in regards to levels of femininity, masculinity and marital satisfaction, but no significant results were found.

Book excerpt: The purpose of our study was to empirically investigate how individuals’ meaningfulness of work (MOW) is positively related to marital satisfaction of his or her spouse, and how meaningfulness of family (MOF) may moderate this relationship. Our sample consisted of dual earning couples with children, which allowed for data analysis through the Actor- Partner Interdependence Model (APIM), and Actor-Partner Interdependence Moderation Model (APIMoM). As hypothesized, there were actor and partner effects; individuals who experienced higher MOW reported higher marital satisfaction and higher MOW for individual’s predicted higher levels of their spouse’s marital satisfaction. Hypothesis 2a and 2b were also supported; individual’s own sense of MOW was more strongly related to their own marital satisfaction when they were on MOF, and spouse’s sense of MOW influenced an individual’s marital satisfaction when the spouse was also high on MOF. Implications are discussed.

It brings together contributions from a range of countries and continents to examine the issues and developments for dual-earner families located in different socio-cultural, political and economic systems. In particular the book explores the ways in which dual-earner couples in these different contexts are reconstructing gender and family roles to balance the demands of work and the family.
