Book excerpt: The effects of silica fume and fly ash on reducing the risk of concrete damage due to alkali-silica reaction are presented in this thesis. One silica fume and twenty fly ashes of a wide range of chemical composition were investigated. The effect of the selected materials on expansion when used with high-alkali Portland cement and a siliceous limestone reactive aggregate (Spratt) was evaluated using the concrete prism and the accelerated mortar bar tests. Portland cement pastes and lime/pozzolan blends were prepared using similar combinations of materials used in the expansion tests. These samples were used to study the effects of fly ash and silica fume on the pore solution alkalinity and composition of hydration products. The study showed that the efficiency of fly ash in limiting the risk of deleterious expansion is linked to its efficiency in lowering the pore solution alkalinity. High-calcium and high-alkali fly ashes are generally less effective in this respect compared to low-calcium ash. Silica fume was found to be effective in reducing the pore solution alkalinity at early ages; however, the alkalinity was found to increase at ages later than 28 days. Combinations of moderate levels of silica fume (5%) and high-calcium fly ash (20-30%) were found to be effective in limiting the expansion even after three years. This was attributable to the high capacity of such combinations to achieve and maintain low pore solution alkalinity. The silica fume reduces the pore solution alkalinity at early ages and the fly ash maintained the low alkalinity at later ages. The study showed that, for low and moderate-alkali fly ash, the 14-day expansion in the accelerated mortar bar test could be used to predict the 2-year expansion of concrete prisms. The results from the lime/pozzolan blends confirmed that the hydration products of pozzolan play the dominant role in reducing the pore solution alkalinity of cementitious systems containing pozzolans. The two-year expansion of concrete prisms containing fly ash could be correlated reliably to the alkalis available from the ash as determined by leaching mature paste samples in leaching solution of alkali ion concentration of 0.25 moles per litre.

Book excerpt: Alkali-Aggregate Reaction in Concrete: A World Review is unique in providing authoritative and up to date expert information on the causes and effects of Alkali-Aggregate Reaction (AAR) in concrete structures worldwide. In 1992 a first edition entitled The Alkali-Silica Reaction in Concrete, edited by Professor Narayan Swamy, was published in a first attempt to cover this concrete problem from a global perspective, but the coverage was incomplete. This completely new edition offers a fully updated and more universal coverage of the world situation concerning AAR and includes a wealth of new evidence and research information that has accumulated in the intervening years. Although there are various textbooks offering readers sections that deal with AAR deterioration and damage to concrete, no other single book brings together the views of recognised international experts in the field, and the wealth of scattered research information that is available. It provides a ‘state of the art’ review and deals authoritatively with the mechanisms of AAR, its diagnosis and how to treat concrete affected by AAR. It is illustrated by numerous actual examples from around the world, and comprises specialist contributions provided by senior engineers and scientists from many parts of the world. The book is divided into two distinct but complementary parts. The first five chapters deal with the most recent findings concerning the mechanisms involved in the reaction, methods concerning its diagnosis, testing and evaluation, together with an appraisal of current methods used in its avoidance and in the remediation of affected concrete structures. The second part is divided into eleven chapters covering each region of the world in turn. These chapters have been written by experts with specialist knowledge of AAR in the countries involved and include an authoritative appraisal of the problem and its solution as it affects concrete structures in the region. Such an authoritative compilation of information on AAR has not been attempted previously on this scale and this work is therefore an essential source for practising and research civil engineers, consultant engineers and materials scientists, as well as aggregate and cement producers, designers and concrete suppliers, especially regarding projects outside their own region.

Book excerpt: Concretes with equal water/cement ratios and equal paste volumes of various combinations of cement, fly ash, and silica fume were tested to establish parameters for strength and chloride permeability. Comparative specimens with Type II and Type III cement were tested. The effects of temperature and moisture availability during curing were also evaluated. In general, the laboratory tests showed that, when adequate curing in the 73°F to 100 °F temperature range is provided, concretes with satisfactory early and 28-day strengths and good resistance to chloride ion penetration can be obtained with either type of cement and various combinations of fly ash and silica fume. The cementitious material can be in the range of 30 to 35 percent fly ash and 5 percent silica fume, based on the weight of the cementitious material. Similar specimens cured at 43°F generally did not develop an adequate early strength, and the chloride permeability was high. Combinations of the pozzolans with Type III cement yielded higher strengths and a lower chloride permeability than did similar combinations with Type II cement.

Book excerpt: The effects of portland cement alkali content, and replacement of portland cement with Class F fly ash, slag, or silica fume on alkali-silica reactivity (ASR) were studied by measuring the expansion of mortar bars made with Pyrex glass and stored over water at 38°C. Expansions were negligible with portland cements having alkali contents of 0.40% Na2O equivalent or less. Above 0.40%, expansions of bars made with cement only expanded linearly with cement alkali content after 56 days in storage through 336 days. Regression analysis yielded correlation coefficients of 0.91 for the 56 and 336 day expansions. An expansion of 0.10% was established as the maximum expansion indicative of a mixture providing acceptable mitigation of ASR.

Book excerpt: This study had two objectives: (1) to evaluate the effectiveness of particular mineral admixtures when combined with portland cements of varying alkali content in preventing expansion due to alkali-silica reactivity (ASR), and (2) to determine if set minimum amounts of various types of mineral admixtures could be established for use with cements of varying alkali content to provide protection from ASR. Mortar bars made with Pyrex glass aggregate were stored moist at 38 ° C for 366 days and measured periodically for length change. Control mortars were mixed with portland cements having an alkali content ranging from 0.18% to 0.92% Na20 equivalent. Test mortars were mixed replacing various percentages of portland cement with Class F fly ash (15%, 25%, and 35%), slag (20%, 35%, and 50%), or silica fume (3% and 7%). Test mortars were also mixed using IP cement produced using Class F fly ash (18%, 20%, and 22%). Expansions of control mortars with alkali contents of 0.4% or less were negligible through the 336-day test period. With cements having an alkali content above 0.4%, equilibrium between cement alkali content and mortar bar expansion was reached at 56 days, when a strong linear relationship between increasing expansion and increasing alkali content developed. A regression analysis was performed on data from the control batches, and the resulting equation was used to normalize data from the test batches. The expansion of mortars containing fly ash, slag, and silica fume was lower than the expansion of the control batches for portland cement having an alkali content of 0.6% and above for all replacement levels of the tested materials. The amount of expansion varied with the type of material, percentage replacement, and cement alkali content. Using an expansion of 0.10% as the maximum indicative of acceptable performance in inhibiting ASR, minimum amounts of Class F fly ash, slag, and silica fume were established for use with portland cement depending on the alkali content of the cement.

Book excerpt: The use of fly ash as a supplementary cementing material in concrete and mortar has dramatically increased in recent years due to its improvement of concrete and mortar properties and its environmentally friendly impact. In this thesis, the sulfate resistance and alkali-silica reaction in mortars containing 0, 20, 40, 60, and 80% fly ash replacement levels were investigated to determine the effect of fly ash content on durability. Four types of cement and two types of fly ash were used in the tests, the cements used were of different alkali contents and with and without blended silica fume. The fly ashes consisted of medium and high calcium contents. The results showed that the expansion resulting from sulfate attack as well as the alkali-silica reaction considerably decreased with the increase of fly ash content, but the strength of the mortar samples greatly decreased as well. The effectiveness of fly ash in both tests was highly dependent on their CaO content and on the chemistry of cements utilized. 20% Sundance fly ash replacement was sufficient to maintain the sulfate expansion after six months of exposure below CSA allowable expansion limit of 0.05% for high sulfate resistance cement and also below the Canadian limit of 0.1% in the ASR test. For Rockport fly ash, replacement levels at 40% were needed to maintain the expansion below the limit of 0.1% in ASR and sulfate test. The presence of silica fume blends significantly reduced the expansion due to alkali-silica reaction and sulfate attack; addition of fly ash to silica fume blended cements did not significantly improve performance.
