Book Synopsis The Ecology of Natural Disturbance and Patch Dynamics by : Steward T.A. Pickett
Download or read book The Ecology of Natural Disturbance and Patch Dynamics written by Steward T.A. Pickett and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2013-10-22 with total page 489 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ecologists are aware of the importance of natural dynamics in ecosystems. Historically, the focus has been on the development in succession of equilibrium communities, which has generated an understanding of the composition and functioning of ecosystems. Recently, many have focused on the processes of disturbances and the evolutionary significance of such events. This shifted emphasis has inspired studies in diverse systems. The phrase "patch dynamics" (Thompson, 1978) describes their common focus. The Ecology of Natural Disturbance and Patch Dynamics brings together the findings and ideas of those studying varied systems, presenting a synthesis of diverse individual contributions.
Book Synopsis The Physiological Ecology of Woody Plants by : Theodore T. Kozlowski
Download or read book The Physiological Ecology of Woody Plants written by Theodore T. Kozlowski and published by Academic Press. This book was released on 2012-12-02 with total page 678 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The efficient management of trees and other woody plants can be improved given an understanding of the physiological processes that control growth, the complex environmental factors that influence those processes, and our ability to regulate and maintain environmental conditions that facilitate growth. - Emphasizes genetic and environmental interactions that influence woody plant growth - Outlines responses of individual trees and tree communities to environmental stress - Explores cultural practices useful for efficient management of shade, forest, and fruit trees, woody vines, and shrubs
Book Synopsis Ecology and Biogeography of Mediterranean Ecosystems in Chile, California, and Australia by : Mary T. Kalin Arroyo
Download or read book Ecology and Biogeography of Mediterranean Ecosystems in Chile, California, and Australia written by Mary T. Kalin Arroyo and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 468 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mediterranean-type ecosystems have provided ecologists with some of the most scientifically-rewarding opportunities to formulate and evaluate hypotheses about large and small-scale ecological phenomena. Comparison of mediterranean-type climate ecosystems in different parts of the world has not only permitted a strong test for ecological convergence, but also critical understanding of key ecophysiological and population processes.
Book Synopsis Global Change and Mediterranean-Type Ecosystems by : Jose Moreno
Download or read book Global Change and Mediterranean-Type Ecosystems written by Jose Moreno and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 547 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Regions with Mediterranean-type climates include parts of California, South America, Australia, and of course, Europe. The effect of global climate change on these heavily populated areas will have major social and political ramifications. This volume addresses issues in these areas, from processes at the leaf level to the individual, ecosystem, and landscape levels. This book will serve to raise awareness on the significance of these types of ecosystems, and on their sensitivity to the threat that global change represents.

Download or read book Mediterranean-Type Ecosystems written by F.J. Kruger and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 566 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The theory of ecological convergence underlies the biogeographers' maps of world biome-types. It also determines the degree to which ecological principles, derived from research on particular populations, communities or ecosystems, are generally valid, and hence also to what extent resource management principles are general. To quote Di Castri and Mooney (1973): "In effect, in order to assess the transfer of technology, it is essential to know to what extent information acquired from studying one particular ecosystem is applicable to another ecosystem of the same type but situated in a different location. " The five relatively small, isolated, mediterranean-climate zones of the earth, each with its distinct fauna and flora, have provided the ideal testing grounds for this theory. A heritage of precisely focused ecosystems research has resulted, beginning with the international comparative analyses conducted by Specht (l969a, b) but with antecedents in earlier studies in South Australia (Specht and Rayson 1957, Specht 1973). Cody and Mooney (1978) reviewed the information available at the time for the four zones excepting Australia and concluded that the arrays of strategy-types to be found among the different biotas were so similar that they could be explained only in terms of the convergence hypothesis; nevertheless, evident differences in community organization and dynamics, especially phenol ogy, required closer study of resource availability and resource-use patterns to better explain relations between form and function overall, and to assess the degree of convergence at higher levels of organization than the population.
