Book excerpt: Extensive literature suggests that Latino youth experience higher levels of depression when compared to youth from other ethnic backgrounds yet relatively little is known regarding why this particular population is especially susceptible to depression. This study focused on family level stressors and the link between interparental conflict and adolescent depressive symptoms in Latino families. The sample consisted of 400 girls and 290 boys, they were distributed into four groups based on gender and family structure. Written surveys were completed in their respective English classes measuring the aforementioned variables. Results indicated a significant relationship across all four groups between family stressors and interparental conflict, along with interparental conflict and depression. Implications and directions for future research are discussed.

Data were collected from a sample of 468 school-age youth, ages 14 to 18 years, using a school-based survey. Analyses indicated direct associations between psychological control and depressive symptoms (positive) and between parental support and depressive symptoms (negative). While IPC was bivariately associated with youth depressive symptoms, the relationship became non-significant when parenting was introduced to the model. Psychological control and parental support completely mediated the relationship between IPC and youth depressive symptoms. Psychological autonomy granting was not significantly associated with youth depression and did not mediate the relationship between IPC and depressive symptoms.

Book excerpt: Given the size and rapid growth of Latinos--and that they tend to fall behind academically--it is important to understand factors that contribute to achievement. This dissertation seeks to contextualize parental academic behaviors by examining the role of stress and family dynamics in their involvement. The first study examines how stress may interfere with the academic involvement Mexican-origin parents provide for their adolescents. Parents of ninth and tenth grade students from two high schools in Los Angeles (N = 428) completed quantitative interviews. Results revealed that chronic stress (i.e., financial strain) predicted less involvement at school--and that acute stressors (i.e., major family life events) predicted less involvement at home, even after controlling for demographics and the other stressor in each model. Furthermore, this study found that these associations were mediated by lower levels of emotional support to adolescents, but not conflict in the home or parental distress (i.e., depressive symptoms and somatic symptoms). Findings suggest that the reason that stress is associated with lower levels of involvement is because stress may limit the positive relationship quality between parents and adolescents. The second study examined parental involvement in organized after-school activities--as these are beneficial to academic achievement, but Latino students tend to be under-involved. Latino adolescents and their caretakers (N = 154) sampled from four middle schools across the Phoenix-area completed quantitative interviews. Linear regressions controlling for demographics and achievement revealed that parental support--instrumental support, verbal encouragement and activity involvement (e.g., talking to the activity leader)--was linked with adolescent reports of motivation and participation in their organized after-school activity. Furthermore, parental support was associated with higher adolescent motivation in families that reported more chaos--suggesting the importance of parental involvement, especially in disadvantaged families. By acknowledging the salient role of family and stressors in the lives of Latino families, this dissertation contributes to a more complete understanding of the ways families strive to develop academic resilience

Book excerpt: Latina adolescents are more likely to suffer from depressive symptoms and less likely to receive mental health services for depression than their White peers, and this mental health disparity is poorly understood. The purpose of this dissertation study is to describe how Latina adolescents experience and seek mental health services for their depressive symptoms. The dissertation includes three components. The first is an integrative literature review to determine which cultural stressors are associated with depressive symptoms among Latino/a youth. The results indicate that discrimination, family culture conflict, acculturative and bicultural stress, intragroup rejection, immigration stress, and context of reception are associated with depressive symptoms in this population. The second and third components were based on interviews with 25 Latinas (ages 13-20) who experienced depressive symptoms during adolescence. In the second component, a content analysis was conducted to determine cultural stressors experienced by contemporary Latinas living in a tumultuous sociopolitical climate in the United States. The stressors included (a) pressure to succeed, (b) parental oversight, (c) being treated differently, and (d) fears of deportation. In the third component, grounded theory methods were used to develop a theoretical framework to describe the process by which Latina adolescents self-managed and sought treatment for depressive symptoms. In this framework, participants shared a psychosocial problem labeled Being Overburdened and Becoming Depressed. They responded to this problem through the psychosocial process labeled Getting a Grip on My Depression, which consisted of five phases: 1) hiding my depression, 2) keeping my depression under control, 3) having my depression revealed, 4) skirting treatment for my depression, and 5) deciding to move on from depression. The Latino family, peer groups, and mainstream authorities influenced the participants' experiences. The process of experiencing, self-managing, and seeking treatment for depressive symptoms for Latina adolescents is both similar to and unique from the processes by which other groups of adolescents experience depressive symptoms. These results will contribute to the development of culturally-sensitive strategies to prevent, identify, and treat depressive symptoms in Latina adolescents.

Book excerpt: Current literature suggests that family stressors are positively related to adolescent psychopathology; however, few studies have examined the relationship between family stressors and positive indicators of mental health, such as life satisfaction. Additionally, past literature has found support for life satisfaction as a mediating variable between environmental experiences (i.e., parent-child relationships, major life events) and adolescent psychopathology. Research questions answered in the current study pertain to: (a) the relationship between family stressors (i.e., socio-economic status, family structure, major life events, interparental conflict) and adolescents' life satisfaction, (b) the overall contribution of family stressors to life satisfaction and which stressors are most strongly associated with life satisfaction, and (c) whether life satisfaction mediates the relationship between family stressors and substance use. To answer these questions, self-report surveys from 183 middle school students were analyzed. Results indicate that experiencing major life events and interparental conflict were unique predictors of life satisfaction, and all the family stressors combined accounted for 37% of the variance in life satisfaction. Additionally, the relationship between these two family stressors and substance use was shown to be mediated by life satisfaction. Implications for school psychologists and future directions are discussed.

Book excerpt: Latino youth in the United States experience high rates of both poverty and of depressive symptoms and disorders (CDC, 2012; DeNavas-Walt, Proctor, and Smith, 2014). According to the Adaptation to Poverty Related Stress model (APRS; Wadsworth, Raviv, Compas, and Connor-Smith, 2005), economic pressure is positively linked to adolescent depression via coping. Using a resilience perspective, the present study extends the APRS model by exploring the role that cultural values, namely family obligation, and control beliefs play in the relation between economic pressure and depressive symptoms for Latino youth. Participants in this study were 404 Latino children and adolescents (M age=12.02; 52.5 % girls), who were predominantly of low-income and Mexican American backgrounds. Results indicated that greater economic pressure predicted more depressive symptoms through decreased primary and secondary control beliefs, which were evaluated separately. In addition, family obligation was found to buffer against the impact of having lower secondary control beliefs on increased depressive symptoms, but did not significantly moderate any other independent path of the mediational models. Finally, family obligation was found to be a significant moderator of the mediational model including secondary but not primary control beliefs, through its attenuation of the impact of decreased secondary control beliefs on depressive symptoms. Taken together, the findings indicated that family obligation represented a cultural asset that protected Latino youth against some, but not all, of the pernicious effects of economic pressure on their adjustment.

Limited empirical work has examined Latino parents' risk for clinical depression and how social connection and social support can serve as risk or protective factors for clinical depression. The collectivist nature of Latino cultures that encourages strong familism values (Padilla et al., 2016) suggest that family and social factors are important domains to consider in research on parental depression. Methods: There were 54 Latino parent and adolescent dyads included in the analysis from an urban community. Logistic regressions were run to assess predictors of Latino parents' risk for clinical depression based on scoring higher than 16 on the CES-D 20. Predictors that were included in this study were adolescent-reported and parent-reported parent adolescent conflict frequency and intensity, adolescent and parent-reported current assistance from adolescents, and parent-reported neighborhood social cohesion. Controlled variables included family income, child sex, child age, parent education level, and financial adjustments. Results: Logistic regressions revealed that only neighborhood social cohesion was significantly associated with Latino parents' risk of clinical depression ([beta] = 2.89, p =.007). Discussion: Contrary to expectations, higher levels of neighborhood social cohesion was associated with an increased risk of Latino parents' risk of clinical depression. This finding contradicts prior literature (Mulvaney-Day, Alegria, & Sribney, 2007). Additional research with larger samples is needed to understand how adolescent related factors such as current assistance and conflict intensity and frequency are related to parents' risk of clinical depression. Findings should be replicated using a longitudinal study to identify whether cross-sectional associations are sustained longitudinally with other Latino samples.
