Book excerpt: This study investigated the potential effectiveness of two different types of explicit teaching techniques in foreign langugage instruction in the context of recent research into the cognitive processes of second language acquisition (SLA). Students in their second year of high school Spanish were given a treatment of either traditional grammar instruction of task-based (but grammar-focused) instruction. ... The relationship between task-based instruction and its possibilities for negotiation of meaning and conversational modification was the basis for its selection for this experiment, although it was not found to increase scores on the GJT's [Grammatically judgement tests].
