Various factors affect how quickly and accurately we retrieve words, such as word frequency, concreteness, and word length. Emotionality of stimuli has been shown to affect other language processes, such as word recognition, but few studies have investigated the impact of emotional stimuli on word retrieval. This dissertation, comprised of three manuscripts, examines this question in neurotypical adults and people with aphasia (PWA) for whom word retrieval problems (anomia) are pervasive. The first manuscript is a scoping review of the current literature on the effects of emotional stimuli on language processing, revealing the state of the evidence in this population, which is sparse. Results showed that emotional stimuli result in better language performance for several different language processes, but findings were inconsistent.

It has also been reported that they have lower, non-optimal levels of physiological arousal, which may cause lower attention levels therefore contributing to poor performance on linguistic tasks. The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between physiological arousal and word retrieval in adults with aphasia and neurotypical adults when presented with emotional stimuli within a confrontational naming task. Participants included 6 people with aphasia and 15 neurotypical controls. All participants completed a confrontational naming task within 3 emotional conditions (neutral, positive, negative) and physiological measures (Heart Rate Variability, Skin Conductance) were taken simultaneously. No statistically significant results were found; however, numerical trends were identified in the data that may provide direction when designing future studies.

In Changing Minds, Roger Kreuz and Richard Roberts examine how aging affects language—and how language affects aging. Kreuz and Roberts report that what appear to be changes in an older person's language ability are actually produced by declines in such other cognitive processes as memory and perception. Some language abilities, including vocabulary size and writing ability, may even improve with age. And certain language activities—including reading fiction and engaging in conversation—may even help us live fuller and healthier lives. Kreuz and Roberts explain the cognitive processes underlying our language ability, exploring in particular how changes in these processes lead to changes in listening, speaking, reading, and writing. They consider, among other things, the inability to produce a word that's on the tip of your tongue—and suggest that the increasing incidence of this with age may be the result of a surfeit of world knowledge. For example, older people can be better storytellers, and (something to remember at a family reunion) their perceived tendency toward off-topic verbosity may actually reflect communicative goals.

Recent research has found that variation in emotional intonation decreases repetition-priming effects for spoken words when processing is relatively slow and hard, but not when relatively fast and easy. Previous research suggests the patterns of priming result because the relatively more frequent linguistic features of speech resonate with memory representations more quickly than less frequent nonlinguistic features of speech. Participants completed hard and easy lexical decision tasks in a long-term repetition-priming paradigm, each followed by an old/new recognition tests. In the lexical decision task, mismatches in emotional intonation were expected to evoke decreased repetition priming in the following two conditions when spoken wordrecognition is relatively slow/difficult: 1) Hard lexical decision relative to easy; and 2) Older adults relative to younger adults. Based on socioemotional selectivity theory, younger adults were expected to respond more slowly to negatively valenced stimuli relative to positive; older adults were expected to respond more slowly to positively valenced stimuli relative to negative. Thus, mismatches in intonation also were expected to evoke decreased repetition priming in the following two conditions when spoken word recognition is relatively slow/difficult: 1) For younger adults, negative-valence stimuli (sad intonation) relative to positive (happy intonation); 2) For older adults, positive-valence stimuli (happy intonation) relative to negative (sad intonation). Furthermore, while specificity effects often emerge in implicit memory tasks, specificity effects are not always evident in older adults or on tests of explicit memstory. Based on previous findings, matches in emotional intonation were not expected to improve recognition memory performance in younger or older adults. Repeated measures ANOVAs performed on reaction times and accuracy rates for the lexical decision task showed that intra-talker variability in emotional intonation reduced magnitudes of priming. Across age groups, intonations, and difficulty conditions, listeners responded more quickly to words that matched in emotional intonation from one time to another compared to those that mismatched from one time to another. These results suggest that both younger and older adults tend to access specific representations during spoken word recognition that contain emotional intonation information. Patterns of responses of younger and older adults also generally supported the time-course hypothesis, and indicated that the reduction in priming was more likely when processing was relatively slow, but not when processing was relatively fast. Across age groups and difficulty conditions, listeners' RTs also varied according to emotional intonation, as they responded fastest to words in a neutral intonation, followed by happy, then sad. Intonation results support arousal-based accounts of age-related attentional biases and are inconsistent with predictions based on socioemotional selectivity theory. Repeated measures ANOVAs performed on corrected recognition memory scores showed that, contrary to previous research, old/new recognition performance increased not only when a word is repeated from one time to another ,but also and to a greater magnitude when the emotional intonation of that word also matchesfrom one time to another. The results of the current study are discussed in terms of adaptive resonance theory and how the issue of representational specificity depends on factors such as age, attentional biases, and valence of emotional intonation.

Recent literature has suggested this breakdown in language performance must be explained by underlying cognitive mechanisms involved in accessing the representations and not the loss of the language information itself. The attentional mechanism has been suggested to fulfill the criteria of this impaired cognitive mechanism that could account for the deficits experienced by people with aphasia (PWA). An attentional blink (AB) task was used to gain further understanding of the role of the attentional mechanism in PWA as compared with neurotypical adults, in both linguistic and non-linguistic conditions. Analysis conducted investigated the strength, magnitude, and length of AB across participants and time intervals of stimulus presentation. Analysis revealed no significant differences between groups or conditions, likely due to small sample size and limited data points. Despite limitations, patterns observed showed that PWA had a tendency to higher susceptibility to AB than neurotypical participants, suggesting that it may be useful to continue investigating the relationship between attention and both linguistic and non-linguistic processing in PWA.

Nine people with aphasia (at least 6 months left hemisphere stroke and presenting with word retrieval deficits) and 20 young adults (reporting no evidence of neurological injury) participated. All participants completed a confrontational naming task during three conditions that were manipulated according to emotional arousal and valence: positive (high arousal, positive valence), negative (high arousal, negative valence), and neutral (low arousal, neutral valence). Average response time was measured for pictures named accurately within each condition. In general, participants with aphasia named pictures more slowly than young adult participants. Neither participant group had significant differences in response time across conditions. Individual participants varied in how emotional valence affected their response times. Further research is needed to identify what factors lead to differing responses to the high-arousal conditions.
