Book excerpt: A study with the use of dance movement therapy as a counseling approach in a suburban high school setting was presented. The objective of this study was to determine if Dance Movement Therapy (DMT) with females struggling with relational issues with their paternal figure contributed to improved self esteem, body image, and communication skills. The literature review describes dance movement therapy, aspects of self-esteem, body image, dance movement therapy used with specific populations, fundamentals of group work, and movement therapy techniques used with adolescents. Methods of the study were presented with the use of eight movement therapy interventions. The instrument and participants were also described. The results were evaluated qualitatively and quantitatively through pre and post test results and observations. Results indicated that DMT was an effective therapeutic technique in a school setting. The discussion also describes areas for additional research and implications for future research.

Book excerpt: This thesis project examines the topics of body image, self-esteem, and dance/movement therapy (DMT) in the context of the self-experiences of young African American women. A critical review of the literature suggests that intersectionality is a link that connects these topics and brings an important lens to understanding and practicing with diverse clients. Body image and self-esteem are variously impacted by the oppression experienced by minority clients who may hold multiple intersecting identities. Movement repertoire, a key focus in the practice of DMT, is in turn impacted by these body image and self-esteem experiences. This thesis suggests strategies to help dance/movement therapists understand body image and self-esteem when working with young African American women. The project also proposes that DMT may be an effective approach in this work because dance serves as a healing mechanism in the African American community.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book demonstrates the use of dance/movement therapy to directly counteract social injustices and promote healing in international settings. It also demonstrates the potential for dance/movement therapy in prevention and wellness in clinical and community settings. The use of improvisational and creative dance is presented throughout the book as a tremendously clear, strong and powerful inroad to healing in every setting. The chapters in this book do not directly address social justice in dance/movement therapy, but rather provide provoking social justice related positions. This call for a provoking re-examination of the definition of dance/movement therapy is fitting as we—as a community—challenge our identity as dance/movement therapists, educators, supervisors and as human beings who have internalized oppression in various forms through our many identifiers and the unique intersections of those identifiers. The editors and authors posit that social justice cannot be fully addressed by focusing solely on the social issues. Rather, we must be aware of where and how the social issues come into the individual(s), the setting, and the therapy process itself. Book excerpt: Using hermeneutic and heuristic inquiry, this thesis asked the question: Can the benefits of dance therapy be transferred and utilized as a catalyst to encourage healthy goals and aspirations in Mexican American youth? Areas of literature explored included self-esteem, dance therapy, somatic therapy, Mexican American culture and trauma, and neuroscience. In the findings, depth psychology was used as the guiding principle to discuss the author's experience of transformation through dance/movement therapy and its application to other populations. Clinical applications of dance/movement therapy were based on neuroscientific investigations of the mind-body connection, the organic benefits of dance, and the role of dance in transformation, and this form of therapy was suggested as an add-on tool for therapists. The use of dance/movement therapy as a form of mind-body connection therapy was supported for physical and emotional healing, and additional research was suggested.

Book excerpt: Dance and Creativity within Dance Movement Therapy discusses the core work and basic concepts in dance movement therapy (DMT), focusing on the centrality of dance, the creative process and their aesthetic-psychological implications in the practice of the profession for both patients and therapists. Based on interdisciplinary and multidisciplinary inputs from fields such as philosophy, anthropology and dance, contributions examine the issues presented by cultural differences in DMT through the input of practitioners from several diverse countries. Chapters blend theory and case studies with personal, intimate reflections to support critical descriptions of DMT interventions and share methods to help structure practice and facilitate communication between professionals and researchers. The book’s multicultural, multidisciplinary examination of the essence of dance and its countless healing purposes will give readers new insights into the value and functions of dance both in and out of therapy.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many children experience great trauma while growing up. In so doing, the traumatic experience becomes repressed, perhaps in an effort to cover up the pain that is suffered. One of the traumas that unfortunately exist is child sexual abuse. A child is suddenly ripped of his self-esteem and feeling of well-being. During my experience as a dance/movement therapist, it has been revealed through movement, that more than half my clients were victims of child sexual abuse. Since the sexual abuse took place on a bodily level, it was therefore contacted and acknowledged on the same level-through movement, even when the client was unable to verbalize or even recall the experience. The purpose of this study is to discover the impact that movement, more specifically, Dance/Movement Therapy has on the adolescent and how it helps him/her to regain the self-esteem that was lost as a result of being a victim of child sexual abuse.

Book excerpt: This thesis examines how the addition of dance/movement therapy affected the participants of an after-school program hosted by the Mary J. Blige Center for Women and Girls in Yonkers, New York. A brief history of the city of Yonkers, focusing on the impact of political changes on the socioeconomic divide, is provided, as is a discussion of Mary J. Blige's experiences growing up in this urban environment and her decision to open a center for women and children. Through a review of the literature, the effectiveness of after-school programs in teaching adolescents life skills, building positive and trusting relationships, increasing self-esteem and strengthening impulse control and social skills is examined. A case study is presented, describing the author's experience developing dance/movement therapy groups with adolescent girls attending the center's after school program.

Book excerpt: In recent years, a growth in dance and wellbeing scholarship has resulted in new ways of thinking that place the body, movement, and dance in a central place with renewed significance for wellbeing. The Oxford Handbook of Dance and Wellbeing examines dance and related movement practices from the perspectives of neuroscience and health, community and education, and psychology and sociology to contribute towards an understanding of wellbeing, offer new insights into existing practices, and create a space where sufficient exchange is enabled. The handbook's research components include quantitative, qualitative, and arts-based research, covering diverse discourses, methodologies, and perspectives that add to the development of a complete picture of the topic. Throughout the handbook's wide-ranging chapters, the objective observations, felt experiences, and artistic explorations of practitioners interact with and are printed alongside academic chapters to establish an egalitarian and impactful exchange of ideas.
